Well, it only lasted one year tho, remember? in 2045 the 42th covid-27 breach ended up killing more than 69 billion Mongus-infected people that the 6th dimentional ants used as livestock, killing 12 of the 18 nest-satellites. That year was insane.
Humans love to feel like we are so far removed from other animals, really the only thing that separates us is the fact that we are aware of what we are.
That and that we've developed the technology to cheat the savagery of nature a lot of times. Technology we unfortunately sometimes just take for granted.

One time when I was a kid I went to a friend's house for his birthday party and he had a bouncy castle. When I got out of the bouncy castle and put my thongs (sandals, flipflops, whatever Americans call them) back on, I was bit by some green ants that had crawled on them. The pain was so bad that my mum had to carry me to the car to go home. To be fair, I was like, seven at the time. It is the earliest memory I have of experiencing physical pain.
It's not so much that the fungi is able to solve the maze, they put food in the maze and the fungi finds its way to the food, so it has something to go for, and it doesn't go straight for it either, it takes wrong turns before finding the right one, olive seen an experiment where water will solve a maze too, just some people read more into it than need be, in my humble opinion
Nikki, the ant fungus both was inspiration for The Last of Us and also, crucially, Paras and Parasect from Gen 1 Pokemon.
