I'm actually selling all my VTI for VOO. I don't really care much for mid and small cap stocks that I have never heard of... I rather put my $ in the Top 500 companies in the US versus 4000 in Total Stock Market, majority of companies which people have never heard of. More is not always better. Plus VOO has a slightly better yield and returns for the past 10 years, so I'll bet on that to continue in the future.

you can say the same for VOO. Other than apple, msft, nvdia, amazon and a few other ones a majority are companies you don't hear about on a day-to-day basis.

The S&P index only goes back to 1926. Between 1926-2020 the S&P slightly outperformed the broader US stock mkt. That said, the future is unpredictable. Either will serve you well. I generally prefer VT as I like radical diversification and don't like having all my money in a single currency.

@@WHlSKYx yup! For the last 6 months I invested into SWPPX for that reason. Even though it’s not a ETF but a mutual fund, the yearly performance showed great results. I am looking to stop investing into SWPPX and do a 50/50 split with SCHD and SCHG. I haven’t made up my mind yet. Lol

What if vanguard goes out of business? We all have to sell and realize/get taxed on our gains? Any low expense ratio alternatives that aren’t vanguard based?

VTI is down 22.5% over the past year. I bought it when it was at it's highest (Dec 2021) and pulled my money out in march or april after I was down around $1800 and put it in a money market (which pays nothing) but at least I earned back what I lost with VTI.

If you can't handle a down year then yeah, you should stay out of stocks entirely. Stick with bonds. You won't get much of a return but you probably won't lose too much of the principle.
