Ah, very interesting idea! Surely helps avoid uneven cuts and wire-jumps. Cool idea!

Hi, recently watched a video on using tar paper, so ordered the smallest bit I could via Amazon, a 1.4m x1 metre piece, then needed to find a video to remind me how to use it. So you tube to the rescue, yours and a couple other videos appeared. In class tomorrow I'm attaching a batt with my batt mate and using tar paper on the top, this then should be a less messy throwing session for me, haha, watch this space, thankyou for your video. Can't wait to try it 😊

It looks and sounds great! Thanks for mentioning my book. Great idea to use the metal hose clamp as a guide when cutting the excess skin off!

Thanks, this is very helpful. I wonder how hot the water you use is.

What’s the difference between the tarp and the roofing felt? if I had to order one of them which one would you recommend?

good idea, but seems impracticable when wanting to throw further pots. your wheel is tied up waiting for clay to become leather hard before you can remove it from the wheel. just so you dont have to wire. what happens if you want to throw another straight away if you only own one wheel like most potters do?

Did you watch the video? The roofing felt tar paper is attached to a bat. You remove the bat from the wheel head as normal.

Here are a couple videos with more info on tar paper or roofing felt. In this recent video I discuss where you can get tar paper or roofing felt and some other uses for it. th-cam.com/video/3NBeNmMwoCQ/w-d-xo.html
Here's a link to my video from many years ago on how to use roofing felt/tar paper bats. This video is part of a juried playlist put together by NCECA. th-cam.com/video/YmtaUiDRrOo/w-d-xo.html
The music in this video is a song called Light Bearer and was composed, played, & recorded by me. You can watch a performance of it here. th-cam.com/video/j3N5N6FgqCk/w-d-xo.html
Hope this may help some of my pottery friends out there. Hope everyone is doing well.
    Much love,

Many people may not want to buy a big roll of tar paper. I wonder how well the flexible thin plastic cutting boards might work? I think I've seen them at the dollar store. It seems like they might be more durable & maybe stay flat better than tar paper. Might be harder to peel off the clay though.

I like that idea! If you try it please come back and tell us how it goes. Enquiring minds want to know 🙂.

@@EvolutionStoneware I just picked up a 2-pack at Dollar Tree. I'll let you know how they work after Santa delivers the wheel.

      How did it go?

Would you be able to slide the tar paper and piece off the bat and onto a ware board so as to reuse the hard bat?

    • @EvolutionStoneware
      @EvolutionStoneware  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes you can. Just run a wire between the tar paper and the bat to detach the tar paper. I like to do that with flat things like plates which are less likely to deform than bowl.

Is there a right side and a wrong side to the roofing felt? If so, which side goes up?

No, both sides are equal. One side might have printing.

That is way too cool. I will have to get me some sheets and cut them out. Thanks!

Can you use tar paper for any throwing. I'm just getting into pottery and am trying to learn simple easy tricks. My husband and I built my wheel. He used a Corian countertop piece for the wheel. I'm thinking it's a little to slippery for coning up and down. Would this work to throw anything with.

It should work with your corian. Use thick slip and not too much. Compress the tar paper firmly with the wheel turning starting from the center & moving to the edge.

Mine started sliding on me while centering. What did I do wrong?

Try using thicker slip and less slip to attach it. Then make sure you press it down very thoroughly with the wheel turning. Press all the way from the center out to the edge. This will also squish out excess slip from underneath. Basically it is probably too wet between the tar paper and your wheel head or bat.
