Bee Balm, also called Wild Bergamot and Horsemint, is a butterfly and hummingbird magnet in any perennial garden. If you deadhead it after it completes its first blooming cycle, before it sets seeds, in late July, it will reward you with a fresh wave of blossoms in August. Learn how to deadhead this fragrant member of the Mint family by following a quick and easy technique. Once deadheaded, a feeding of a low nitrogen food will finish the job and then all you have to do is pour some lemonade, add a few leaves of Bee Balm to your glass, and sit back and get ready for the show.

I have been looking at my bee balm lately wondering about the correct way to do the task in order to encourage more flowering. I especially appreciated the suggestion about what to do with the extra new plants in the spring. My patch of bee balm has begun to overtake my small flower garden and I will make sure to do what you suggested in the spring in order to keep them under control. The bee balm attract so many beautiful butterflies and bees and I love watching all the insects enjoying them. Thanks for your generous help!

I have two year old clump of Monarda doing exceptionally well. Very satisfying. I was delighted to hear you say that rabbits and deer don't touch it. Probably true because mine has lasted for a while now. Most things that I plant get eaten...usually after just one night!!

Thank you for the tutorial! As of late July 2021, the mysterious and deadly disease affecting songbirds on the East coast has now moved to the Midwest. People were encouraged to remove their seed bird feeders where birds congregate and unfortunately share the disease. And now we are told that hummingbird feeders must also be removed. Although I have a large flower garden, I worried about what food sources would be left for my hummingbirds without a feeder and also now that most monarda, spiderwort & hostas are finishing their blossoming. We also have phlox, swamp milkweed and Joe Pye coming into bloom, but the monarda seems to be much preferred by the hummingbirds in my area. It's good to know that I can deadhead my monarda and hopefully continue to have food in my garden for the hummers before they start their migration in a few months.
Hello, yes songbirds are suffering this summer. National Public Radio did a report on the serious situation. Don't fear for hummingbirds though, nectar is not their main food source; they also munch on insects which provides needed protein, and many songbirds will too. Hi. I’ve found that Hummers like bee balm but don’t love it as much as they do other flowers. Get a pot of zinnias or put out a pot of cardinal flower. Bees love bee balm as do hummingbird moths which are cool insects.

The fragrance is found in the leaves. Crush one between your fingers. Happy gardening 🌻

@@TinthiaClemant Thanks for the tip. I haven't noticed any, but even my smaller plant is not as fragrant as it has been. Perhaps they came up too early . I will water and fertilize. This is all new to me. I thought I was getting the same plant and was shocked when this plant grew 4 feet! The original one, which is older, is only about a foot tall.
@@dorothybrown8859 hello there are many many cultivars of Bee-balm some are tall and some are short. I’ve always felt that the leaves smelled beautiful on all of them, but your information has made me pause and I will have to look into this.

The green leaves on my bee balm are drying out, is it possible they are diseased? They get just enough water and the flower itself is amazing but the leaves and stalks are starting to look rough :(
I make my own tea from the leaves. Oswego tea named after the Indians who made the drink.

Mine have the powdery mildew on them, maybe on 60% of the plant. New blooms are still popping up and growing though.
How would you treat the mildew? And should I cut off the affected leaves? I wasn’t sure if that helps the health of the plant, helps stop the spread, or if it just helps it looks nicer
Hi yes mine have powdery mildew too Even the plants that I bought that were supposed to be powdery mildew resistant. Pull off the powdery leaves and dispose of them in the trash Don't put them in your compost bin and scrape around the bottom of the plant and get as many of the dropped leaves as you can. Remember to not get any water on the leaves if you can help it. I know that you have no control over rain but water from the base of the plant and don't let the water splash up onto the leaves. Once the plant has finished blooming cut it right down to the ground and dispose of the stem in the trash. This has been a tough year for mold and mildew on our plants dude is a high humidity levels in many locations. Good luck and happy gardening. 🌻
Hi, me again. My bee balm have now come back and are about 1 inch tall so far, maybe 2inches. They’re all green & purple leaves, with no mildew (thankfully). I’ll do a better job watering them this year, but when do you typically begin to water them? Is it to early now at this height, or should I start to water them now?

Congratulations, I love bee balm’s scent. Some of the new cultivars are mildew resistant in theory but I haven’t had much luck. Best to water at the base of the plant and snip off any signs of mildew. Let me know the name of your plant and I will research it for you. Happy gardening 🌹
When should you fertilize the plant.... I'm not ready to deadhead it so I'm just curious? I got my first set of blooms I planted it last year and I think that I deadhead it it wrong but it does have nice leaves. I have plant-tone and Hollytone, are either of those any good to use? What do we do to winterize this plant and when do we do it? Thanks!
Hi for Bee balm, at the end of the growing season, during the late autumn, cut the plant right down to the ground and clear away the pieces you've cut plus scrape the top layer of the mulch that you have around the plant and discard all of that in the trash to eliminate infecting the plant with fungus such as powdery mildew. if you haven't deadheaded the plant there's no need to feed it as you're not expecting a second wave of blossoms, in other words it's too late in the season for the plant to send out another wave of blossoms. It's not an acid loving plant so Holly tone is not a good choice for it. Next spring when you start to see the plant peeking out of the ground, again clear away any debris around the plant and give it a serving of Flowertone and some fresh mulch and then you're good to go. What container do you have your flowertone in to distribute?

storms knocked my bee balm over. The flowers are all spent. First time Ive grown it and the first time Ive started seeing bees in my garden again. Should I just prune off the knocked over stems. It always has a bush of leaves at the bottom. Will these grow new stalks?
Hello I had the same thing happen. If your blossoms are still full you can wrap the stalks with a string and stake them. Mine are spent so I had my friend cut them back. You should get a second bloom after cutting back. Give them a blast of bloom booster food once you start to see new growth.

What type of mulch is that..not a single weed i like it
I use cedar mulch, a very thick application, about 2 inches deep. A few weeds do get through but I pull them as I walk through the garden. Thank you for watching my channel. Happy gardening. 🌻

Mine is splitting apart from the center and falling to the side. Should I cut it back?
Hi, if I’m picturing it correctly, there’s an area in the center of the clump and the stems are falling away from that area? What zone are you in? Is it getting enough sun? Bee Balm needs full sun. Sedum does the same thing if it doesn’t get enough sun. However, some tall varieties of Bee Balm need to be staked. If the flowers have yet to appear you could place a stake in the center and wrap the stems with string so they’re upright; then you’ll at least get your blossoms. Cut it back when the blossoms fade. Any sign of disease? When you water it do you water at the base? Keep me posted. 🌻
@@TinthiaClemant maybe I just need to stake it. It's fairly tall. I'm in south Georgia. It's in full sun and has been blooming for about a month now. No disease.
@@brendatraub1161 Hi, if it’s still blooming then I’d try staking. But do deadhead the spent blossoms. You could also prune out any thin stems which will redirect the plant’s energy to more robust stems. Happy gardening. 🌻
If the bee balm does get powdery mildew is there a way to get rid of the mildew?
Sadly, no. Cut the bee balm down to the ground and scrape the top inch or so of the soil and dispose of it all in the trash, Next add a fresh layer of compost mixed with soil (I use mushroom compost) to replace what you scraped away. Even powdery mildew resistant bee balm isn't fully resistant. With the high humidity some zones have been experiencing, mildew is wild!!! Good luck and happy gardening. 🌻
Mine seem to perform well and bloom furiously even with powdery mildew.
@@pnpdynamic9720 Be careful, the mildew will spread to other plants. My bee balm is just starting to get some mildew but the blossoms are still beautiful. I'm keeping a close eye on my peonies which are nearby. If they start showing signs of PM then it's time to trim back. Happy gardening.
I’ve asked this before but have yet to receive an answer: Why water from below? Does rain not have the same affect as hand watering ?
Hello, I apologize for missing you question. Rain is sporadic, but a constant rainy period can also create an environment for mildew to grow. Since Watering is a more constant condition and can soak the leaves, watering from below helps to reduce fungal growth. I hope this helps. Again I apologize. Happy gardening. 🌻

Do honey bees like this bee balm flower?
J have never seen them on mine, only butterflies and hummingbirds. But, sadly, my town sprays and the chemical has destroyed many local hives. A quick double check showed that they do. I hope you get lots of visitors. 🌺
@@TinthiaClemant That is too bad about the chemicals. So upsetting. I am fortunate that I live in NYC where my hive is where there is zero pesticide use so we have it good. As for as the Bee balm, someone who seemed to know a lot told me that honey bees love only two types of bee balm. One is Wild Bergomot. So I ordered the wrong thing. I ordered Monarda which honey bees don't care for. Thanks again.
@@bradgoliphant yes bees LOVE LOVE LOVE this flower! I had 2 bees on this plant within a day of bringing home this plant and usually have 3 or 4 bees on my plant a day.
Brad, yes honeybees do like bee balm, but hummingbirds like it even more than the bees do. We're in the Chicago area, zone 5, and get a lot more honey bee action with calamint and the common 2' tall variety of light purple allium. Those plants in my garden are COVERED with tons of honeybees, and you can divide the common variety of allium almost every year. Honeybees are also VERY keen on Joe Pye which is just starting to bloom here in late July. In August, the honey bees will be feasting on all the sedum/stonecrop blossoms in my yard. I grow autumn joy, matrona, carl, night embers & showy stonecrop. As we move into autumn, honeybees go nuts for asters when they start blooming August-September. I never see honeybees give much attention to chrysanthemums, although my white/purple mums get a few honeybees. The yellow, orange and burgundy mums are fairly ignored, but that may be simply bc the bees prefer the asters and sedum still in bloom at that time.
Why cut at an angle?
Weeeelllll, the answer depends on who you ask. Many gardeners believe cutting at an angle allows water to run off the cut edge and not seep into the stem which can rot the stem, but the plant does a good job at sealing the cut edge so the seeping-off belief might be a fallacy. However, I was taught to cut at an angle and I do believe it helps the plant. Plus it looks pretty. Thank you for asking. Happy gardening. 🌻

Oh I feel your pain. I get plants that are just about to bloom and then the young rabbits come through and snip off the stem. They don’t eat the buds, just leave the stem with the bud on the ground as if to say ‘F you lady, we control this garden. ‘ 😩 happy gardening 🌻
I bought Bee Balm to add to my "Get Hummingbirds to come". No one, and I mean no one ever tells you in these You Tube videos just how horrible Bee Balm smells.

Geez, I’ve never thought it smelled terrible...more of a fresh cut grass smell for me🧐 I do appreciate on how to cut them as it’s time to do so along with my phlox...thanks 🌸
@@CarriUSA Some gardeners don’t like the scent. And you’re correct, deadheading bee balm always seems to coincide with pruning tall phlox. But remember to wipe your pruners before switching to new plants. Happy gardening 🌻
It smells heavenly in my opinion so I’m guess that’s why…sorry your missing out.
I planted it last year and it sprung up this spring. When it bloomed I was surprised how fragrant it was..Just proves the human body and the nose in this case is so complex. Some like it and I guess some dont. This is the first year Ive seen bees in my garden for a long long time. I usually get maybe one or two in the spring then no more. Im going to put this all along the back of my garden. I have the light purple , I also have a clump of the spikes. I think they are supposed to be pink, but mine are all white. I do want some red ones.
