    I saw a good comment suggesting that Oppenheimer would have worked better as an HBO Chernobyl style mini-series. This was a great movie, although the rushed pacing and amount of info dump was a bit difficult to keep track.

      Bingo! I was thinking the same thing,a limited series would have been amazing…everything felt rushed…and very little character development..the overlapping music didn’t love too much either.

    The sound was so over used I got soooo bored. Instead of the sound helping the intensity they over played it so much I just wanted the buzzing sounds to desperately stop. The editing got repetitive, the back and forth in time got boring. Seeing famous actors constantly popping in pulled me out of the movie over and over. I found myself not caring about what happened to any of the characters. Matt Damien didn’t work for the role. It just felt like we’ll there is Matt Damien again. The women were pathetic. The plot line with Robert Downy Jr. just felt petty. I guess I was supposed to care about the spy but I was so bored I couldn’t even bother to try and remember who that was. I almost walked out. I personally will not be watching another Nolan film in the theaters. The pacing felt mechanical as if an android with no human feeling was attempting to create feeling having no actual idea what feeling is.

    I completely agree.
    I’ll say this, while the movie indeed felt intense at times, I think the sensation was done more on a surface level rather than a deeper. In other words, I believe that the movie - with it’s grandiose sound and visual (especially with IMAX) circled around with the emotions without actually touching them. It was loud, and so it was stressful at times, but I didnt get stressed because of the circumstances in the story, I got stressed because it was.. Well.. loud, which I feel similarly with the likes of Tenet - intense music and visuals yes, but shallow story: Rushed, undynamic, repetitive, predictable. So again, the sound was great, but in the end of the day that’s a mere empty trick if the storytelling is not there.
    The storytelling was flawed, on Perhaps all levels. To begin with, although I agree with your overall opinion of the movie, I’d have to say that I don’t agree regarding the editing. It was (IMO) not great at all. Too much cutting, no room to breath. Every single time a character is talking in a dialogue, the camera switches to that person. The editor seems to almost never have the guts to just let it be, let the shot stay where it is, let us stare at Matt Damon even though Cillian Murphy is currently talking - but no - We just have to change shot, because that guy is not saying anything, just listening, and We can’t let the camera stay there because nothing is happening. This way of editing results in exremely repetitive shot-sequences. We constantly switch between a close-up on Person A and a close-up on Person B.
    But this is not just the editor’s fault. It starts with the directing, and How Nolan chooses to block the scene. The way I remember it (I watched the film 4 hours ago), the blocking was always very static: Person A sits on this side, Person B sits on the opposite side, Sometimes he’s standing yes, but they never really break the wall. Person B stays at his corner, and Person A has No plans moving into B’s zone, which means that the shot doesn’t naturally progress/turn into another shot (something, for example, Spielberg is a master at), which therefore means that We always have to switch between the - as I said - two same shots which gets very repetitive.
    Another part of the story that’s lacking, is the dramaturgy. The film is constantly moving. There’s never a pause, with no music, no grand sounds, just a room to breath where We listen to a complete dialogue without post-production sounds. It just doesn’t happen, it takes a few seconds until that tense music is rolling again and all of a sudden We change scene, and then again, and then again, and then a new scene, and a new scene, and another new one. It just runs and runs and runs, it feels like a 3 hour long montage. A great director like Nolan must know that the key to an engaging story is to make it dynamic. There must be pauses from tension, so the few times it gets tense We actually react to it…
    …you mentioned that stuff where always happening and you where sad that you couldn’t enjoy them. But isn’t the mere fact that stuff is always happening, Well, the very cause of your disconnection to the story? If we’re constantly bombarded with content, We very quickly get desensitized to it. It goes the same with p*rn. People constantly see these easy-access explicit videos online, and so they get used to it and once you’re addicted, it just doesn’t do anything anymore and you have to move onto more extreme contents. I would say Oppenheimer in that sense is a 3 hour long p*rno, only that the p*rn in this case is made of constant use of tense music, a bunch of switching in between shots, and short ”scenes” that quickly turn into a new scene right before We get bored. But all that it does is making us (me atleast) disconnected and bored…
    …the movie is constantly changing scenes, so much that I can’t say if they’re actually scenes but instead parts of a 3h long sequence that never seems to end. The scenes must in one way or another get independent, in order to make them iconic. We remember the classic baptism scene or the restaurant scene in The Godfather, they were like their own short movies, making them a part of a longer collection of short movies (scenes) which then form a living masterpiece that is the Godfather. We remember that ”what’s so fuckin funny” scene in Goodfellas, or the La Marsellaise scene in Casablanca, or the Exodus scene in Shawshank Redemption, woman in red dress scene in Matrix, little girl in red coat in Schindlers list, and many more classic scenes, because they where like their own short movies that connected Well like a puzzle with the rest of the film. But Oppenheimer to me felt like a neverending sequence that finally stopped with the (great moment I must admit) horrifying end scene. There’s No dynamic, and the fact that it’s trying to escape boring moments makes it boring.
    But Cillian Murphy was a Good choice as Oppenheimer, and Einstein was great! 6/10 is probably where I’d put it too! Was very excited, left not as satisfied. But hey, each to their own. We are all equally dumb, and our opinions weight the same :) thanks for the review, thumbs up from here👍🏼

    Yeah, I very much agree with you. The last bits of the story were not as that engaging. They started dropping character names that has appeared for like a 30 seconds before that I totally forgot about already and did not care. Its like this for the last 40~ minutes, but before that its a real masterpiece imo.

    So disappointed in this movie. Didn't like it for four reasons: 1. too loud - I saw it in an IMAX; my ears were ringing, and my chest was thumping; 2. too much mood music overlaying the dialogue; I want to hear the story and the character development, not the incessant music; 3. too many fast scene cuts, it made me dizzy, and felt amateurish; 4. I wanted to see more about the actual scientific and engineering advancements that made the bomb possible; too much time was spent instead showing Oppenheimer's battle with Straus.

  • @Grande79

    This is typical Nolan. It’s an astonishing technical achievement, it’s interesting, the acting is flawless. At the same time it really doesn’t have any heart, you don’t care about the characters, at least none outside of Oppenheimer. The first half is disjointed and frankly boring. The second half feels like a different movie entirely, it’s tighter and less choppy. I can’t explain it, it’s a 3 hour movie that feels 30 mins too long and rushed at the same time.
    One thing that can’t be argued, Murphy puts in a top 10 all time performance. They should give him his Oscar now.

  • @petergrossi6605

    Nolan tried way too hard to make JFK and he falls short. The bomb explosion was well done but also anticlimactic and underwhelming. I was mixed on it but I gave it a marginal recommendation because I was trapped in a theater for almost 3.5 hours

  • @misszee007
    @misszee007 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It reminded me of Oliver Stones JFK. Super epic and tons of info but hard to take in one sitting. I think if they would have made it a more linear thing rather than cutting back and forth. I did tear up during the scene when he was being cheered on. Very emotional knowing what he’s brought upon humanity and the earth itself. Also liked when Truman put him in his place like “you made it but I hear the brunt of having deployed it”. I’ll definitely rewatch it but when it streams, I’m used to my closed caption and being able to rewind to soak it in.

  • @lydiaornot
    @lydiaornot ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I totally agree with your criticisms. I understand Nolan's idea to make it more about the story than individual characters- and that is precisely why I think he should not have directed Oppenheimer.Tbh, I experienced more of Oppenheimer's emotional complexity by reading his Wikipedia page. Nolan def. has his strengths but he is not good at creating complex characters and dialogue that mirrors those intricacies. The cinematography and the acting were stellar but that could not save the movie from being disappointingly flat in my opinion.

Who gives a shit about the communist accusations / security clearance?Oppenheimer is all about the Manhattan project. That was his Journey, his legacy. I cant believe it all culminanted into that 1 hour suplot with Strauss conspiracy. Yikes
      Character development was atrocious. Too much bouncing around. Longest dialog is like 30 seconds and you can't hear half of it without subtitles because soundtrack covers up this abomination. I agree with the whole emotionless thing for Oppenheimer. Like, I got sad during inception and then excited and then happy and kind of mellow and empty towards the end(in a good way). But with this I felt numb and empty the whole time because it moved too fast for me to connect with it. Dunkirk orderline made me cry my eyes out and I found it insanely moving. Maybe the reason why you found it hard to connect with Dunkirk and Oppenheimer is because you can’t relate to the people. Eg sure you might’ve been in the army at some point but wouldn’t have had to be residues from a place you could get killed . You weren’t alive when the bomb got created for example. I know this is not true for me but I was just thinking it could be a subconscious thing

  • @Eff_Jay
    @Eff_Jay 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think the reason the storyline was confusing to keep straight because of the way it was edited. I think having it be quite a choppy style and in less of a chronological order made it for me personally and the people I watched it with harder to emotionally connect with it because we had to focus so much on who was who with there being so many characters and things happeneing at the same time. I think it could’ve worked jsut as well or even better if it was in more chronological order with a few flashbacks or scenes jumping forward in time to foreshadow or something like that. Then again that’s just my opinion
