I worked in the flight shed in 1963 and paintshop before that. used to have lunch in the Cofton Park...All gone now, with good memories of what a good Nation we used to be
I watch this with a heavy heart. I spent 17 years of my life at longbridge. Mr T----s, you had a chance to make a lot of us happy and blew it. Long live the memory of Longbridge, i for one will miss you forever.
Since Rover had a joint venture with Honda it started to make good quality cars, later followed by the 25, 45, 75. I had the last 3 and they were perfect. Not only that, Rover was for me not only a car, but a part of the family, with a long history, a heart and soul. I miss the brand lots I can tell. What others think I really don't care, because it's my true feeling.
Instead of just building cars I'll be literally making cars. Evolving and improving is key otherwise you'll find yourself stuck. A few of my mates from Longbridge have done the same thing - I wish anyone luck with whatever they're doing now though - it is sad to see this place go down.
fantastic piece of work my friend , i noticed the other day that the old charles clarkes of wolverhampton building in chapel ash are beeing pulled down. god please save great british industry
so sad to see the place be flattend so quickly, like many others have said banks and the like are being bailed out at the drop of a hat but when longbridge needed it no one gave it a second glance, so sad to see the some people just didnt care =(
i worked in trentham seat build for 6 years and in the powertrain for 9 years,,dont miss the job but i sure do miss the lads,,what a great gang of guys!
Well, I'd like to say thanks to everyone who worked at Longbridge. I've owned 2 cars from there and they've both been brilliant. A 1991 Rover 214 and currently own a 2000 MGF. The MGF is the most wonderful car I've ever owned. I'm still deeply saddened by it all.
So Sad It was coincidence that this first song (White Flag By Dido) was on the radio in my Beautiful Rover 25 when I got it. I’ve Got the 2002 Rover 25 Impression 1.4 5 Door as My First Car I love it Can’t Wait to fully drive it when I’ve passed my test. I loved Rovers and especially the 25 since I was little. I remember Someone having a 2001 Rover 25 Impression 1.6 3 Door when I was a little boy same age as me but that’s probably long gone I remember crying when the person put it in the swap for a Excellent Vauxhall Vectra and Around when I was 9 or 10 in either 2010 or 2011 I think. My Grandad got British Racing Green 2002 Rover 25 iL 1.4L in a gorgeous British Racing green and had it for a couple of years a Fantastic car indeed I loved it. Now here I am with a Gorgeous Dark Blue Rover 25 Impression from 2002 and having owned it a month now can’t stop looking after it and being with it. I hope to have a long and good future with it I got it while I am learning to drive because I love it so much. The car is around 8 months younger than myself. The car is 17 on 12th April while I’m 18 on 9th September.
I fully agree with sentiment. The problem is the relative difference in the cost of labour and how everything is implemented, we just can't compete as easily unless the money is already there for us to build ourselves up. MGR suffered from poor investment, and management right to the end. But for me it is a blessing in disguise. I made the decision to get my engineering degree and this is my ticket out, I'm 28 and this is my only major shot. Once I have this, it'll open loads of doors for me..
My father loved his rover 45 which we got in 2007 and sadly part exchanged in the middle of January this year 2010, it had served us very well but we are a family of 4 so we needed something bigger and pultipurpose so we part ex'd it for a nice mazda premacy, Yes i truely miss our rover 45 indeed i just love rovers despite the bad things ppl say about them ;)
R.IP British Car Industry. Only in Britain could we allow this to happen. If only we could have a got the enthusiasm behind something that was British that meant something, instead of when a puff of wind is being kicked around a football pitch, when men will fight for something British. Very sad indeed.
There's a lot of different factors, agreed. And from an outside perspective, I'd lay some of the blame with the unions. When I was younger there were always news stories about strikes and uncompetitive practices at this plant and other UK car plants. Well in the end the unions got what they deserved. There will be a future for the Longbridge area, even if some of it is housing there is supposed to be 10,000 jobs created. We'll have to wait and see.
cannot believe how quick they tore it down, great place to work at,laughs corrupt owners, always selling of this and that, then when FAULTY TOWERS sold the land we knew it was over for good,he quoted he had a 5 year plan but did not mention it was to close for good,,thanks for the vid happy days..
1. It already has been torn down there's a shopping center and houses on the site 2.You cant just say that about about a fundamental pice of British enginering history yes it was mess but it wouldn't have been in that state if labour had smarted up In the early 2000s and gave rover a loan but they didn't. So it was left to rot and now we don't have a mass market car industry that once was the greatest in the world.
bigE ProDuctiOns It was nothing to do with the Gov. The workers didn't deserve a loan, they had priced the cars out of the market with low productivity and greedy trade unions. Nobody has a right to a job, they have to be productive and sell their products in the market.
you obviously have no idea who owned mg rover at the time and that they were trying to fix what the previous owners had destroyed but due to the lack of money they had no chance to do so. Do some research before you try and argue a point would you please?
bigE ProDuctiOns No, the workers were lazy, and the unions had demanded too much money. That's why they went out of business. Their cars were out of date and not value for money compared to Japanese cars. The workers sealed their own fate.
they can say what they like but speaking has Birmingham man it was a sad thing for longbridge and Birmingham when they got ridd of the Austin god bless
I love MGR and own one, however the workers, exec's and unions killed the company. I blame them not the government, you cant be expecting handouts. The quality on most models was poor (apart from 75). People in Powertrain should be shot for releasing the K series engine with potentia; HGF. If only the BMW money was used to release the RD30 design and the common rail L series diesel engine rather than the stupid SV then MGR may have had a chance.
my granddad owned a 1994 'L' Rover 214 Si in the horrible dark Blue, from 1998-2007, he should be driving a Rover 45, but instead he bought an 2007 Fiesta 1.25 Studio 3dr in red, now he owns a 2014 Kia Picanto 1.25 3 in red which he will be getting rid of for a 2016 MG Motor Uk 6 1.8 SE, my mum owns a 2014 MG6 1.8 TSE Magnette
Well Rovers were poor cars in comparison, by the end. The foreign products were better and cheaper. You can't live on dreams, or at least you can't make a living on the dreams of the past, so move on. Lets redevelop that site and do something more useful with it.
And yet we send lots of British taxpayers money to foreign companies to upgrade There factory’s it’s wrong Charity always should begin at home not sending it to foreign companies to support them

Rover made amazing quality cars before the SD1

What a shame our heritage lost for ever longbridge has never been the same since we have lost mg rover

Very nostalgic memories...so sad to see it all gone!
I used to work in the office block in P gate, shown @ 2:31, still miss the place and all the great blokes there
so sad to see the place be flattend so quickly, like many others have said banks and the like are being bailed out at the drop of a hat but when longbridge needed it no one gave it a second glance, so sad to see the some people just didnt care =(

+Rich Newall Smash up those crap factories!!! The workers were low productivity parasites whose stupid unions priced themselves out of the market.
God,this was the Bostin Austin, and it's gone.Few people realise what it meant to us Brummies........
02.45 is wats left of longbridge thats the Q gate it was newest part of longbridge

was longbriedge completely demolished??
its dead mate just one Q gate MG factory left and that is tiny.
my dad work there in the 80s its sad even now that such a massive British business with so much history has gone
+bigE ProDuctiOns Tear down that crap. Let's build something useful!

why did the dmolish the place anyway, it was quite historic
If NAC can make MG shine, why not. MG and Rover are British, no matter where they are, who is using them.
