Uganda's traditional kingdom of Buganda, a state within a state • FRANCE 24 English

- The largest monarchy in East Africa can be found in Uganda. The traditional kingdom of Buganda is a true state within a state, retaining its political powers and spanning a vast part of the territory. At its helm, King Mutebi II governs 14 million people in the central part of the country, but rarely appears in public. The sovereign coexists with the Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, who is responsible for the resurgence of monarchies in this large African nation. At the heart of Mutebi II's lands and the capital Kampala, UNESCO-listed royal tombs are about to reopen to the public after 13 years of renovation. FRANCE 24's Clément Di Roma reports.

Im a South African and i was there in October 2023…. Its a magical place, and I learnt alot about the Buganda history 😊
Thanks France 24 for visiting Buganda kingdom, kindly don't forget to come back we have a lot we you didn't know, thanks again, thanks KABAKA for paying my school fees since the death of my mother up now, thanks everyone who contribute money though our ministry of education ... wangala ayi KABAKA wa Buganda.. it's means long live KABAKA of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi Kimera, I will always love you my King 👑
Proud to be a Muganda
Am a proud muganda. Sabasajja kabaka wangaala
Proud Muganda too
Nange
Buganda still reigns
We thank you, God
Long live my king Ronald Muwenda Muteebi
Proud of my tribe
So Buganda isn't a tribe but a nation
@@w_y_n_2k In the 18th century, all kingdoms of Uganda were states,,at first it was a good thing to unite and form a state,Uganda, but at this time it has not helped any of our tribes or kingdoms, its been always wars, secretarianism, embezzlement, our unity in diversity could be good but it turns ugly when one tribe sits on others, taking what belongs to us all to one side, its not good that's why people are crying and flashing back to what could be or it was when one tribe is headed by it's own king cuz a king can't still from own people, now we owe trillions of which I dont think have lay Ugandans have anything to do with this money but we have to pay,a road funded thrice to complete and the results are poor quality,we're a shame on international level, that's why the Baganda are some how defiant, apart from one tribe,no Ugandans are doing well financially but people are sweating everyday for peanuts.
We're not tribe We're nation
With love from Kenya.
Yes Buganda kingdom
Buganda is so welcoming
Indeed Buganda is a state, hence Uganda’s unitary is a dysfunctional system. Uganda needs a FEDERAL system in order to rise!
Not just Uganda, the majority of African states need it. But, under a parliamentary system like German. The presidential forms of governance are too susceptible to corruption.
Mmmm proud to be a muganda man #long live our king .
Wow!
Please go ahead and do atleast a 40 minute documentary about this rich Buganda History and culture ... i volunteer to write the script...... this short video just covered like 1 % of the more beautiful Buganda heritage, the unique history, food, monuments, way of life , their religion...and much more
I was literally thinking I'd love to film this, would you want to collab?
It is a 1000 year old kingdom that occupies a place at the centre of Ugandan politics even if variously gagged by both the present and previous regimes. Based on these facts, I can predict with great accuracy that it will outlive all its opponents.
Thank you for bringing back to my home town. Mengo in the house 24 hours. It w as Mwanga 11 who brought the capital of the kingdom to Mengo. And it was his grandson Mutesa 11 who called meeting of all the tribes at lancaster before independence. Alot of us have accepted the rest of our fellow Ugandans. As much as i love my kingdom i will never disrespect other ugandans from across our country.
Maybe you should write your post in Luganda for it to be more understandable 😏
@@gerrytushh I don't plan to go through all that , I grew up in Uganda alot of people feel real bad about us saying anything about our kingdom.I haven't even lived in Uganda in almost 50 years, and guess what I managed to graduate out of very competitive institutions.
"BUGANDA KUNTIKO" thanks for great work France 24
Well said. However, the country Uganda emerged from Buganda kingdom! And the king is Supreme over all leadership of the country. It was a state even before Independence.
The Kabaka is supreme over buganda alone.
He deserves no place in the lakes region, he was a great collaborator in the slave trade. Obote must have been right.
Wow.
Thanks France for telling the truth we a state that has live for 1000yrs
The one and only kingdom
Oh yeah. The most famous kingdom in the entire universe too 😂
@@BillyPhilipRwoth thanks for the mockery but Buganda's a big deal in Uganda like it or not

We believe in our hearts, it's fully a State.
No. We don't even have kingdoms in Uganda. We have traditional institutions.

@@habibmagala970 It used to be a kingdom. It is no longer one. A kingdom is a sovereign entity that makes its laws, controls its borders, collects taxes and dues for itself. Tell me which borders Buganda controls, which laws it makes, and which taxes it collects?
Hey DW,the name you have given this video is wrong,go back at the end of the 18th century,Buganda was a state and was dragged by the British, just tricked us into Uganda and we're facing problems since then,go back and back check all government schools, police stations in buganda, all was already there before the british, where the parliament is,was already there b4 the british,so,Buganda can look after its people without the central government cuz it has done more harm than good, you did the land problem documentary some years back in Mubende, this is all done by central government to the people of Buganda to weaken us by making many of us refugees in our own country and you the whites have not helped us,all this started when british to us into one Uganda.
Your king collaborated and helped them conquer Uganda,it reads like crocodile tears.
@@Inzira155 but you belong to Rwanda,Ugandan issues ain't your thing,I dont think you should discuss them.
@@slenderlutaya3006 haha who told you these colonial borders mean much to me,yes i "belong to Rwanda" but my clan can be found among all neighbouring tribes including Bakiga,Banyankole etc i was born in Uganda...yes i am not Ugandan but my opinion on the internet you can not censor.
Buganda is rock
Let's not separate Ugandans.we are all one
we"re still one Uganda but at the same time we"re still Baganda .
Don't start that nonsense
Excellent, that place is nice & clean
Long live my King. Long live Buganda

It's one country, nothing like a state with in a state
Amazing
Thank you 🇫🇷 France
Am happy to be a muganda
Where is John Ssempebwa's museum about Buganda Kingdom found?
"a state within a state" Buganda is a state of its own...
Wow
When the Pandora Box was opened HOPE remained and for Baganda, KASUBI Tombs is Buganda's hope because the word Esubi originated from Esuubi which means HOPE!
Proud muganda...

Infact Buganda is the only African monarchy still existing
Eswatini is still a monarch
That is an insult to other Kingdoms
In your alternate universe maybe 😅
Clearly you are living under a rock
Uganda has like 5
“The president can change”
Not in Uganda it can’t!😂😂😂
I found this enjoyable to watch, i for one thiink cultural heritage should be preserved for the past dare not be forgotten. But a quick look at the comments and replies will help one realize how contentious the idea of kingdoms is, a double-edged sword that unites it's followers and at the same time divides the rest of the country and undermines collective national pride and identity in favor of tribal loyalty.
Is there also a Wuganda?
Buganda is the biggest & strongest of all east African kingdoms with Uganda s capital city, national most spoken language LUGANDA .But some people call her wuganda ,Ganda, wakanda among others.
Buganda is Uganda, and that's the end of the story
I want somebody to talk about the true history of Africa regarding the dirty dealings of kings that exploited human beings and resources in collaboration with colonists.
Go ahead and tell us about them, and whose resources they exploited. You could learn something new as well. And remember all of us who are Christians, or whose parents and grand parents were Christian, are guilty of 'dirty dealings' by dancing to the tune of the colonists
Monarchs are 1%-ers 🤴🏽 🤴🏾 🤴🏿 👸🏽 👸🏾 they DO NOT DO COMMERCE or bargain with anyone. You cannot go to Queen Elizabeth or King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand and ask for 200 of their people for a car or a pet or coffee.
Doy you know why? = because they are Monarchs and can have anything they want. They dont get tea for themselves. they dont cook, or even walk sometimes. Entire country comes to their aid.
Kings and Queens: are just that. no Merchants or sailors rules them.🤦♀
if the colonist came to their land; the British do not order the King. Whatever the king wants he gets.
African Kings and Queens are not day labourers. Right now in 2024 what do you think the King of Buganda wants and cannot get?
the people who ruled those tribes must answer to him. POWER IS POWER
** the reason why I said African Kings and Queens are not day labourers is because never in their life have they ever lived in squalor. Poor people desire things royals take for granted. I know you dont know this because you use the word exploited. like they are not the ruler of that land.
You have to pull back from a false history you wer taught and use HUMAN BEHAVIOR.
if you rule a land. why would you give away all your subjects and your land ? and for what. what is worth your whole kingdom?
🏙🏙If I rule my city: there is nothing you can trade or bargain with me for unless you are going to give me 🌆the next city over. POWER is the only thing kings or queen engage in conversation. Keeping their POWER or gaining more POWER . not losing subjects.
as wealthy of a continent Africa is: Royals on the continent have everything they want.. or could ask for East , West, North or South
the logic only make sense if you are middle , lower or trader class : where exploitation of humans will make your $$rich.
🤴🏾 🤴🏿 👸🏽 but if you are the KING you are the richest person in the land by default. everyone is your subject.
Famous line: "its good to be the King"
Alot of Ugandans love hate on the kingdom, and never even consider the land on which they are standing on in kampala the schools they attended or the hospitals they go to we made it happen. .
Modern techniques are forbidden but I’ve seen nails, which I doubt were used in the original construction
Baganda kingdom is History,Just like the British kingdom and many more 2:58
My kingdom. From mamba clan
Buganda is order than Uganda
💎💎💆🏽♀️💆🏽♀️
wow. 1:49 Basically native Europe monarch culture so this mean They are a Hebrew Kingdom as well. 🤴🏽 🤴🏾 🤴🏿 👸🏽 👸🏾 how many crowns left ancient Egypt?
I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS NOW? then I have a follow question on why Indians were removed? because native Indians are part of that Nile valley family..... I have to see which type of Indians lived in Uganda.
Africa has so many secrets and hidden history.
Well, that's slow
Im from Antelope Clan
Those statues represent our clans not familiar please
Buganda kingdom is just a name it lost all it's powers long ago, it's just a traditional institution with no powers Western Ugandans and Rwandese are going to be the majority in their land in few years. I my self like Baganda for their resilience and hardwork.

Like most African chiefs/ kings they were also collaborators in the slave trade, Kabaka must have been one of them. We should also remember them for that, slave trade😢!!!
Now what, we cry about it 😂😂😂 Africans with hanging on issues move in find new ways of civilization and modernity . Learn to move on . Should Germans bow to jews because of what they did? . Be open minded and developmental
For the sake of history let's keep memory of facts, the positive and negative. Should be handled carefully to avoid promoting tribalism. @@truth19904
The kingdoms who were involved in slave trade.
Just like all humanity in the world did, if you lack knowledge of the history of humanity, kindly go back and do more research.
