Richard has such a beautiful voice and such perfect diction, I could listen to him reading a telephone directory!

Excellent as always. I've heard a lot of E.F. Benson, but I don't remember this one. Merry Christmas, and thank you for all your work.

One of the best classic horror authors read by one of the best voices.

There are a few stories in which Benson delivers charm rather than scares, and it's one of the reasons I like him so much. My favourite is probably "How Fear Departed from the Long Gallery", but "Machaon" is a delight too.

This is a story where it leaves you at the end, thinking. Such was Benson's real genius. He didn't just narrate a tale; he finishes it...and then you are left with.."goodness, I wonder..."

Tilling!! House with walled in garden and the garden room!!! He’s describing Miss Mapps house (and his own house-Lamb house in Rye). Never heard this before. Wonderful linking in from Fred Benson (possibly before Miss Mapp was even written?)
    Beautifully narrated. Thanks Richard.

    • @GhostsByRC
      @GhostsByRC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

It is indeed! Benson uses Lamb House quite often, under different names, in several stories and novels. Apparently Machaon was first published a century ago this month, so it’s less than a year after Miss Mapp made her debut.

@@GhostsByRC Ah I see. Thank you! I’m very new to Bensons spooky stories but have enjoyed the Mapp and Lucia novels for years (currently rereading Lucia In London - I wonder if you will narrate it someday? That would be awesome). That said I am really enjoying your channel and performances and your narration is sublime so have to say a big thank you! Happy new year too x

EF Benson is one of my favourite authors of ghostly tales.
Along with MR James, Sheridan LeFanu, Edith Warton & Baroness Orcsy ( spelling?)
I also found the recent docu about the Benson family facinating!
Along with E.F Benson & i think a brother George & another brother who wrote & was a clergyman they had a sister author too.
A very controversial family that had a ( at that time) full mix of gender role reversals
The brothers seem to have been homosexual & the sister was lesbian, not that, that is of any consequence but it is odd that of the 4 offspring of the Benson family were born one sex but changed their gender proclivities
    Later!
It makes me wonder why ?
Were the parents of similar gender preference?
It is unusual in families that all of the siblings had gender differences.
I have a dear friend who has 3 brothers & 2 sisters but its just him & 1 sister who are gay
The rest have families & as far as my friend is positive his other brothers & sister are straight
Therefor it is unusual that all the Benson children were gay
Im not sure if the docu was on the radio as i listen to
BBC Radio 4 all the time & rarely watch television.
I wonder if anyone else has heard this docu about the Benson
Family of outstanding authors as they all wrote but its EF Benson most people know.
Thank you for your splendid narrations of the best spooky tales from past authors who rely on words to conjure up fear & apprehension rather than modern sensationalist authors
    Peace
    🇬🇧👧

Thank you! The author Simon Goldhill has written a very thorough and entertaining book about the extraordinary Bensons, called A Very Queer Family Indeed. Mary Benson, the children’s mother, did live with another woman after their father died. I didn’t hear the radio documentary, unfortunately - I hope they’ll repeat it.

Thanks for uploading. I sub a lot of people and it’s a good reminder to check your actual channel page for new uploads. Just in case I missed it in the TH-cam subs feed.
Michael Helmsworth also uploads very seldom.
