ESPN has a bunch of clowns for analysts.
Look at it this way. The 49ers and Rams have traded a lot of picks for stup players. They are just fine.
Barnwell is a dolt. 😂
That’s a disservice to all clowns😂😂
They just hatin. Our draft picks were amazing this year. Great job Kwesi
Kwesi 4 Presi
Gave up too much capital.. but they wanted us to give up a helluva lot more to get to 3..
Right? Lol so we get the QB they said we'd have to give 3 firsts to give up. Still get the best edge in the draft and still have our first next year and it was too much. Lol
Oh no, we gave up a few mid round picks ONE YEAR for a damn fine player. It's clearly end the end of the world.... So tired of these national haircuts
When Turner is all pro they will take it back and tell us how much they loved this trade
Couldn't agree more. They would have loved the pick if one of the major markets or even the Packers made that move. Most tried to play the Pennix pick as a great move. Just shows how they treat mid to smaller markets. Soon we will hear all the Turner trade speculations.
@@youthanasia007 before training camp😂😂😂
And gave away picks in 2025 lol
Cost benefit analysis time: a few mid round picks that will probably be back up or rotational players vs the best defensive player in the draft at a cornerstone position? hmmm....no brainer... I think the vikes would have probably tried to traded back out of the 23 spot or just pick the best corner at 23 if Turner didn't fall 10 spots but the opportunity was just too much to pass up.
Barnwell is a douche. He wanted the Vikings to trade JJ for #3 pick to draft a quarterback
yeah he’s a moron
I agree
ESPN has fallen far.
I couldn't agree with you more. Sad to see.
FACTS!!! I used to watch Sports center EVERYDAY. Now I only use ESPN to watch games. Besides that they’re garbage. SKOL4LIFE
ESPN can go pound sand SKOL
. They hate the dallas turner trade because it wasn't the cowboys,chiefs,eagles,packers,49ers,steelers, who made the trade up.
I can guarantee you if we stood pat and lost JJ espn would have said why didn’t you do everything in your power to get JJ. They still would have given us a C plus. We could have gotten Dallas Turner at 11 and quinyon Mitchell at 23 and traded up somehow to get Spencer rattler and espn would have given us an F. Let any other team do that it’s An A -.
yup. media hates Minnesota
As a Vikings fan we should all be used to this by now. No matter what we do the media will always sh!t on us. I loved this draft. A+ SKOL4LIFE
Haters gonna hate. I'm friggin PUMPED for this season.
Does ESPN understand that this means we’ll have even more money for free agency?
What I don't understand is that the expectation was the vikes were going to have to give up picks 11, 23, and 2025 1st. So they kept 3 first round picks and got rid of some mid round picks and everyone is upset???
It's impressive that ESPN has not went bankrupt.
JJ macharthy is the qb of the future
This analysis is way off - ESPN had McCarthy going #4 and Turner going #8 in their mock drafts which is worth way more than the 7 picks they gave up. My calcs show 3200 in value versus 2460 in cost. This ignores the lower value of future picks and the premium needed to move up for a QB. How we ended up with both players and kept our #1 next year is a mystery to me.
If the cowgirls made this same move, he would be singing their praises. ESPN can go kick rocks.
If any other team made this move, they'd say that they fleeced the the trading team. That they got the steal of the draft etc etc
If any other team made this move, they'd say that they fleeced the the trading team. That they got the steal of the draft etc etc
They just hate that Vikes didn't spend all the draft capital to move up to the top 5 to get 1 player like they wanted. Instead, turn it into 2 great players.
Don’t hear anyone complaining about the Texans drafting Will Anderson do you?
Not to mention we got one of the best CB in the draft in round 4
They just hate that we got Dallas Turner instead of one of their favorite media teams. The way I see it is, yea we don’t have a 2nd round pick next year but that Dallas turner is our 2nd pick for next year and we get our 3rd back for Kirk cousins and we managed to keep our 1st round pick so essentially we lost a 4th round pick for a potential superstar 🤷🏽♂️
What Barnwell fails to mention in his article is the "hit rate" for 4th, 5th, and 6th round picks. You are lucky if you get a few rotation guys after the 3rd round. This really becomes an argument about quantity vs quality. Is it better to have 8-10 good to mediocre picks, or 3-4 potential superstar picks? By potentially getting the QB of the future (the most important position in sports) and a cornerstone edge rusher, you have set the team up for success. Also, let's not forget that since these are 1st round picks, you have the 5th year option available to you. Most analysts outside of Barnwell and Kiper believe that the Vikings got (2) of the 10 best players in the draft. Yes, it cost us a lot, but that is the price you have to pay to get superstar players.
Also, one other tidbit. You are taking two guys from premier programs (Alabama and Michigan) who were developed and coached by all-time great coaches, played in many high-impact games, and had great success. The draft really is a crapshoot at times, but when you can get two solid picks in the 1st round who could positively impact your team, you take them. Worry about the draft compensation later.
Oh No! Not the 5th & 6th!! 😂🤣😂🤣💀💀💀 SKOL 🙏
Something that makes me mad is when people say Dallas Turner is just a Danielle Hunter replacement
ESPN is out of touch. Some of those clowns at ESPN must have started at the twillight zone training facility.
I stopped watching ESPN years ago!
They just mad that he will cook this year no cap
They don't like the pick because it's a good one. They don't want the Vikings to be good
Love it andy. Keep callin out their B.S.
Aloha Andy. ESPN's Bill Barnwell doesn't know that the Vikings can still trade down in 2025 in Round 1 in acquiring more draft picks. Despite trading away the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th round picks next year to get JJ McCarthy and Dallas Turner in 2024, Free Agency supplements the Draft as well.
I bet that guy at ESPN loves the lion, packer & bear picks. Screw the media. They hate Minnesota. They want all their talent to play in New York, Los Angeles ,Chicago, Bodton, Philadelphia & Miami. They want those places to be where its at.
The reason I hate the overpay take is that once the pick is on the clock you're not trading for a number, you're trading for a player. If the trade was made before pick 1, yes it's an overpay. Truth is we didn't trade for 17, we traded for Dallas
Never ever let anyone’s opinion affect you.
ESPN, salty af
Not sold on McCarthy yet. Came from a Michigan run team, not super mobile and arm strength is so so. JMO
Did you see him in the combine make Drake Maye look like an amateur?
He hit all his receivers with anticipation in full stride right on the numbers… while Maye had his guys slowing down, stopping, or breaking stride to catch his passes …. And they were running half speed. I don’t need a guy who can throw 90 yards. Give me a guy who can consistently get 10 - 40 yards and I’ll show you a Super Bowl qb. Let’s not pretend Brady had a strong arm
The Vikings are so good at UDFA’s, that they got the players they wanted in UDFA’s, so they can afford to give up a couple of picks, because they will turn a USFA into another Ivan Pace Jr. he worked out pretty well for us.
Seriously. We can always dip into Free Agency for any holes to be filled.
I saw that article. Bardwell said trading up was stupid, and trading down to accumulate picks was the way to go. Everyone see the blatant logical fallacy? Who do you trade down with when it's stupid to trade up? What a bozo. Further, what they paid to acquire the 23rd pick was a sunk cost and irrelevant at the time of the draft.
I believe this guy is going to be very similar to #11 of Dallas.
Agreed
Remember, this is espn.
Were it not been a “quarterback draft” Dallas Turner easily would have been a top 5-10 pick. ESPN opinions are like &$$(?!:s, everyone has one.
If you go pure analytics and build the best bang-for-the-buck team you possibly could, you'd end up with a low end mediocre team that costs about 25% of the salary cap.
After you determine who the best value players are, you need to see how much room you have to splurge on more premium players. You still apply your analytics, but you now have to accept that the costs are going up exponentially as the overall skills increase. So you rank your players by order of skill. You still apply their cost to that skill to get a value. You find where the player you previously determined to be the best value is, then you start looking at the players above. Then you find the best value of the players above the one you have and target them. Then you do it again and again across your positions till you fill up that salary cap.
Same thing applies to the draft, instead of salary cap you have draft position as the value. And when you can get a transcendent player on a rookie deal, you get them.
Kept #1 round in 2025 all that matters - fk their charts.
There's a sense that they're almost jealous of the action - angry for scoring what we did via impractical means.
Originally what we did was gave up two 2nds (as well as a 5th) for a 1st. Great move, especially granting the position we were in.
We then added a 3rd and two 4ths to move up to secure what was a top 10 prospect (seen him ranked 7 on ESPN) and the consensus number 1 defensive prospect who fell. It’s less about how far we traded up and more about who we got.
This Stuart chart sounds insane…You’re telling me two 2nds, two 3rds a 4th 6th and 7th is worth the price of Caleb Williams, according to this logic.
Right? Any team would trade that for the #1 in a heartbeat. #1 overall is usually three 1sts just to start the conversation.
No team will give up draft picks for Evans, Cine, or Booth Jr. If released/cut during the initial 4 year rookie contract, I would think they would all clear waivers. Maybe some team would give a 6th rounder for Booth Jr. Doubtful. You would have as much luck with a 6th round pick in the draft vs turning any one of them around. A team would absolutely pick them after waiver clearance. I’m still baffled by the decision to take Cine over Kyle Hamilton.
In what universe is two 2nds, a 3rd, and a couple day 3 picks going to get you the #1 overall pick? More often than not, it costs three 1sts
Turner was the best Defensive prospect in the draft, and we got em at freaking 17. 🤣🤣
They’re just mad the Vikings had a damn good draft and will find any reason to bash them over it. Texans gave up way more for their version last year, and no one batted an eye. Vikings do it, and everyone loses their minds.
Is there any chance lewis cine will play this year. I understand a leg injury is serious & takes time.
I don't get it.. Most experts predicted the Vikes trading 11, 23 next years first and maybe more to move up to draft a QB and that would be wonderful.. Now they traded a few mid levels picks to move up to get the QB AND a stud Defender and keeping next years #1 but that is too much??? those so called "experts" are morons... I am super pumped to see McCarthy and Turner wearing purple for the next decade... SKOL...
Think about it: The Vikings having 3-5 well above average Edge pass rushers. What a luxury to have fresh pass rushers late into games after wearing down the opposing tackles play after play.
So let me get this straight, Mr Analytics Bill Barnwell thinks 13-4 was a mirage but last year wasn’t? Last year when we lost our best player for a good chunk of the season, our starting QB for most of the season, and arguably our 3rd best player, TJ, towards the end of the season (when we were still technically in the playoff hunt)? And let’s not forget, after we lost our starting QB, our number 2 was already hurt so we went with our number 3, a rookie, who lasted one quarter and then he got hurt. So we had to turn to a guy who had just joined the team that week. And we still won 7 games and stayed playoff relevant until the end of the season. But that season, with all those top player injuries at the most important positions, is indicative of what this team is? That is some really bad analysis from Mr Analytics.
Quality over quantity.
I will take quality over quantity every draft!
Lol I bet they do hate it
Just pure Haterade. After this draft, Kwesi is my guy at GM! The jury is still out on O’Connell (as a head coach), though I like him too. Once he gets more seasoned (as a head coach), it will be interesting to see what he turns into. Throw the charts out the window, these are great picks for the Vikings’ present and future. If they can add another defensive back, or two, Flores has the ingredients to do some cooking himself. The Vikings are underrated this season.
So first off, this is the same group who said minnesota would need to give up jj and 3 1sts to get to #3.
They are screaming JJ was a booty prize. And the same crowd that said we would need to trade both firsts and change to get to 5 for JJ.
What this comes down to is simple.
Few thought we would get a qb and keep the extra 1st. I screamed at social media and here that after over 200 mock drafts of data, we had a 65% chance of staying at 12 and getting JJ.
Many saw Dallas going 8 to Falcons. And when a great pass rusher falls, you pay the cost to get him.
Spots 9-18 are usually the best pass rushers.
Aaron Donald being the 4th pass rusher and first dt in 2014 for example.
Turner was only the 3rd pass rusher taken that night. And that is a huge boon.
Simply put. I liked the move. A few mid rounders to get a blue chip player. One some argued we should take at 11 if he fell is just a no Brainer and he would not have lasted much longer
This is dumb, I thought we destroyed that trade. We didn’t give our first next year and got the qb and edge taken care of.
ESPN and Rotten Tomatoes critics are synonymous. If they were good at identifying talent and making trades, they wouldn't work for a "Sports News" organization.
ESPN hates every team we have, except for Anthony Edwards LoL 😂
Yeah but they want Ant to leave Minnesota
They love Ant. But can't stand the Timberwolves.
With how deep the defensive draft class was in the later rounds and our free agent moves.. This was a stupid pick and JJ will be a bust
To say you paid to much when you don't know what the future is means nothing. If he's the next LT we would have gotten a steal and Kwesi would be a genius. It is a lot though if Turners not a double digit sack guy with a couple pro bowls than yea we paid to much. You got to like when you get someone rated #1 at thier position. Now they could have stayed at 23 and gotten Terrion Arnold also rated #1 on some boards at a position of need for us. We'll just wait in see.
ESPN sold out long ago. Hate them more.
I honestly started to wonder how far apart they had Maye, McCarthy, and then Penix. Asking for a return in picks makes me think they liked McCarthy and Penix pretty closely to Maye.
Well if we traded for the 14th pick instead of 17th we would have won the trade…… so if we value him at 14 we win.
It's ironic when people say Kwesi mortgaged the future while picking up future cornerstones of the franchise.
It was a lot to give up, but when turner becomes the next parsons, the vikings will have the last laugh.
ESPN mad because Kwesi didn’t follow their predictions about combining first round picks (including next years) for one player (who may or may not work out). Kwesi is smarter than the talking heads and they don’t like it.
Why were they including the pick to go up to 10, in the trade to get Turner?
Roll "Tide Turner"!!
No matter wat we do we always gone b underdogs til
We finally win 🏆
If the Vikings used a 4-3 Defense Jared Verse Defensive End Florida State Seminoles 4-3 would have been the pick at 17. The Vikings use a 3-4 defense and that is the reason why they picked Dallas Turner Outside Linebacker Alabama 3-4 Defense.
Stuart chat- Mandela effect
Even analysts dont get this... if youre a GM youre not valuing the picks, youre valuing the players and then estimating what value the picks could get you. Try building a model and youll see. High end players at high end positions at positions of need in years with scarcity - youre talking super high value in rd 1
Heck, I'll take two or three guys who are high draft picks who can play versus 19 guys from rounds 5 to 7 who will never smell game, which seemed to be our strategy in the past few years.
I think the only team that kept up with us in the 1st round is the bears and we got a future franchise quarterback and a stud on defense with turner that could be a instant replacement for d hunter
For the best defender in the draft at 17, after already getting my qb, I woulda given more
what these ESPN guys fail to mention is our projected cap space for next year
Getting the top edge rusher in the draft at 17.....Verse more polished but Turner is a physical elite, with much higher ceiling
Question becomes what the Vikings paid( wasn't cheap) but if you could get that Bosa, or Hunter, or Parsons, you would all say do it
Rookie DPOY, maybe Rookie OPOY......wow wow wow
If he turns out a top 15-20 edge it's worth it. If he pans out on his potential of top 10 it's well worth it.
i will say this draft was alot better than the one in 2022 witch was really stupid considering they could have taken either kyle H if they didn't trade down or trent M even after trading down what didn't make any sense to me was trading down the last 2 times and then they pick a player that was injury proned and then another player with injury's and now neither of them have barley seen the field since
I get the thought process if it was a team that couldn’t compete. The Vikings are going to compete. You can question how good they will be this upcoming season but they will be competitive and Turner will elevate the team. If it was a team like Washington or New England who needs A LOT of help I would wonder why you are wasting the picks when you could add talent everywhere in a very deep draft. Minnesota just needs a few key pieces and Turner fits that. If they can just another WR and DB this team will be fantastic.
Bill Barnwell birthplace-Long Island, so of course he's a coastal guy and we are flyover country
Mid round picks are not too much for a potentially game changer
Basically, he's saying the Vikings gave up picks that equal a 1st rounder FOR a 1st rounder. I dont get the fail.
Hey so I was thinking if the Falcons would have pulled the trigger on drafting McCarthy do you think we would have traded up to select Penix at #10?
The critism makes no sense. The inital trade with Houston is not connected to the trade for turner. If they dont trade up for turner the picks for 23 are gone anyway. If you want to criticise the intial trade fine but to try and lump the 2 together is so bad faith. People just assume if they dont trade for 23 JJ is still at 11. You cant tell me everyone thinking the Vikes would use 23 to move up didnt impact the giants, broncos, and raiders strategy for months leading up to the draft. The giants may talk themselves into JJ and not a receiver, denver and raiders may think a trade up is more realistic.
Caleb Williams will probably get sacked more by Dallas Turner than any other player, but the Vikings traded a ton of depth for that. I know how that worked out with Ryan Pace. Being draft pick strapped sucks. That article was one of the best I've read in a while and it is not cap although some of it can be debated, like which chart is th ebest chart.
ESPN's struggling to stay on the Air......who gives a rats ass what they think 💬..... getting Turner was marvelous, stupendous, fantastic......great move, the hell with ESPN......
Sure pick may have been an overpay for 17 but turner is a top 10 talent and if you look at those analytics it’s a win in favor of Vikings getting a top 10 talent
Why does everyone always no matter what shit on the vikes.. I thought it was a really good draft
In that picture with DT and JJ, did JJ complete the pass?
The Chiefs traded up to #10 to select Patrick Mahomes. That seems to have worked out
ESPN same as et tonite. Ha
Fear mongering at its finest.
Who cares what any talking head thinks, it’ll all get figured out on the field
They don't like the Vikings lol
I've noticed lots of JJ haters. Hopefully we can prove them all wrong
Turner could be and probably will be a stud but McCarthy hasn't shown that he can be "The Man " at ANY point in his college career. Yea he hasn't needed to be but that could be by design because Harbaugh knew he couldn't be. Trey Lance / Zack Wilson / Blake Bortles/ Christian 2.0 ( all of which had more impressive college careers ) here we go
All these nay sayers gonna eat their words! Stud comes to mind.
