Joe has been a hero of mine since I was 14. Learned the electric guitar by learning his songs. I actually liked "You Bought It, You Name It" a lot, and "The Confessor" is one of my all-time favorites. Kinda funny how the song "15 Years" came out 35 years ago, and he's still plugging away.

Listening to "Song for Emma" from So What tears me up. A heartbreaking testament to Joe's young daughter who was tragically killed in a car crash while Joe and his family lived in Colorado during the '70s. And that's just one song from Joe's amazing solo career. Stevie Nicks once called Joe Walsh the greatest love of her life.

I’ve always had a lot of time for Joe Walsh. I went to see The Eagles three or four years ago and while they were supremely professional and incredibly faithful to the records, they seemed absolutely cold as individuals. With one exception - Joe Walsh. When he said something on stage, the warmth of his personality raised the temperature several degrees in an instant. He is just so damn likeable.

The version of Turn To Stone on the Barnstorm album is the best version IMO, heavy, raw (unlike later over produced versions).

Joe Walsh for president 2020. Joe has always been one of my very very favorite guitar players
    1. Smoker you drink player you get
    2. Funk 49 album
    3. The Long Run album
    4. I just love everything he does
I saw him live in concert after he got thrown out of the Eagles. Add a small movie theater near Denver. It was one of the best concerts I ever saw in my life. He is a mesmerizingly an amazing guitar player pretty good songwriter amusing and fun vocalist not a bad keyboard player and boy can he tell jokes when he's drunk and doesn't have the Eagles tormenting him
I don't know the names of many of his albums when I was a kid I have the smoker you drink the player you get and I listen to it over and over again with the first Blue Oyster Cult album cities on Flame I just love Joe Walsh I never saw anybody play guitar like Joe Walsh nobody not Steve Howe not Jimmy Page certainly not Pete Townsend I have never seen anybody tickle the guitar strings The Way Joe Walsh does and he laughs and makes the funniest faces when he does it he just really loves to play guitar I don't think he thinks of it as anything but his life's Joy

@@beckblowbyblow You know how some musical experiences/interludes in life just stick with you ? In the Philly/Delaware Valley area in the mid 80s & early 90s, WYSP used to feature 6 complete albums on Sunday nights; it started at 9 or 10pm & was called The Sunday Night Six Pack. I very distinctly remember listening to The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get one Sunday night as I was closing up the gas station I used to work at back then. Why do I remember that ? Good question ! Supertramp's Crime Of The Century was also featured that night. Both Dreams & If Everyone Was Listening by The Tramp stick out in my mind from when I was young on that chilly autumn night....
Weird, Running Down A Dream by Tom Petty while getting on the NJ Turnpike to go to Lake George/Hague, NY in August of 1990.
Why do our minds randomly sample life experiences, (even meaningless ones, like I mention here...)in combination with music, and have us retain them over our lifetimes ?
Hey, Pete ! A subject for a potential future video ?....
In fact, beckblowbyblow, I have one of these types if memories that relate to the Blow By Blow album. Here goes:
In 1990, I paired up with a girl from the above trip to Hague, NY...on Lake George. This long distance relationship fired up in August & continued through to the end of the year. She & her friends hailed from Albany. She went to college at the University @ Buffalo. We took Amtrak together from Philly up to Buffalo where I stayed with her for 8 days.
Buffalo in late Oct.-early November was UNSEASONABLY WARM, BIG TIME. My next to last day there, the bottom drops out, like a high of 30 degrees, down from the mid-70 degree mark just the day before. I get sick. REALLY sick (it developed into strep throat eventually due to not seeing a doctor sooner....)
So here I am, sick as a dog, with Amy & her long, beautiful hair, putting me on a public light rail line train which will take me to the Amtrak in Buffalo & headin' home after a great, memorable time..... No money for said light rail line- had to jump the fare. Luckily, the used an honor system for public rails back then- they still might..... For the last time ever, I kissed her goodbye with all I have in the world right then. An Amtrak ticket to Philly, a bottle of water, a PB&J sandwich she made me & my Sony Walkman. No money whatsoever.
Opting to get a local radio flavor vs. CDs, I search around the dial. And come across the astounding track, "Cause We've Ended As Lovers". A Syracuse based college radio station was in the middle of playing Jeff Beck's masterpiece album in it's entirety.
Everyone should be able to hear "Scatterbrain" while looking out of a window of a passenger train that is going over 100mph in their lifetime !!
And little did I know then, but "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" was all too appropriate. At that underground train station in Buffalo, at the corner of Main Street & Depew Street was the last time I'd ever see her or her pretty face or beautiful, wavy blonde hair.
But on that train listening to El Becko ? As bad as I felt physically, it was washed away for the next 20 minutes, in heaven, really- I was.
Remembrances like those ? We will all, collectively, take them to our final resting places. The power of music, in a nutshell.
Believe me when I say that I am very happily married. I have SERIOUS health issues, but my wife is truly there for me.
As for Amy ? We tried back then to maintain, but the distance assured it was not going to work. I can only hope life has treated her well. Genuinely.
Addendum to my Buffalo experience: As for the obnoxious Buffalo Bills fans I met & partied with back then... (Obnoxious ? Not even speaking about football....when they learned I was from the Philly area ? Here we go: the Bills are better than the Eagles. Jim Kelly is better than Randall Cunningham. Keith Byers is a joke, get a real running back like Thurman Thomas, blah,blah....
We joked a bit, had fun. But as over-the-top as they were about anything Buffalo Bills, it put a distaste for the team in my mouth.
They got theirs, alright. That very next Super Big Game, their beloved Jim Kelly & the Bills were indeed there, vs. the NY Football Giants.
Bills fans would like to forget the name Scott Norwood- the guy who missed the field goal that would have won the Bills the Super Big Game.
And yes, their beloved Bills appeared in the next 3 consecutive championship games as well. And lost every one of them, too !
Four consecutive failures in THE BIG GAME !!
Now normally, I'm not a curmudgeon when it comes to other people's passion, joy & raison d'être....
But to this day, I'll make an exception with Buffalo Bills fans !!👊🤓

Analog Man produced by Jeff Lynne. When Walsh was asked about his collaboration with co-producer Jeff Lynne, he said "Jeff and I met socially, and at one point he said, "Why don't you bring your tracks over sometime and we'll have a listen." That led to some comments and ideas that he had. Gradually, we worked on some stuff and checked out some of his stuff too. It ended up that he really helped me finish it up and ended up producing. He really put his stamp on my music and took it in a direction I never would have gone, and I'm really grateful to him.

I can't think of another artist or band who had better album covers than Joe ! I've not heard any of the post 70's albums apart from Analogue Man but the 70s albums are unbeatable. I wish Joe hadn't joined the Eagles: He didn't need them and they didn't need him. It brought an end to that wonderful run of solo albums, but given his lifestyle, I doubt he'd have sustained that creative streak. I'm glad that he's still with us. Thanks Pete...

Barnstorm is my favourite of his and one of my favourites ever, I love how they combined so many influences, styles and instruments into it. From folk-acoustic stuff like Birdcall Morning and Comin' Down to the haunting Giant Behemoth with flutes and Morse Code to straight up rock like Turn to Stone and Mother Says. Wonderful album. Always wonder what could have been had he not fallen gone so far off the rails and the 70s and 80s wore on. Never recaptured what he had.

    4. So What (The Best Song is Turn to Stone which anyway is better on Barnstorm...)
    5. The Confessor
    6. Ordinary Average Guy
    7. You Bought it You Name it
    8. There Goes the Neighborhood
    9. Analog Man
    10. Songs for a Dying Planet
    11. Got Any Gum
All in all, his albums except for the top 4 I listed are pretty inconsistent. I just have them because, well, you never know - every once in a while he comes up with some weird pretties.
Remark - His live album You Can't Argue With a Sick Mind has an all-star cast but is about the lamest live recording one can imagine. Maybe it is just because of the line up that was not as tight as a band would have been?

Totally agree with your Top 3. 'Barnstorm' is a quiet masterpiece. One of the best albums of its era.

Maybe I missed it, but So What also included County Fair. County Fair was not one that I really had noticed at the time. However, it is now, in my opinion, just behind the best, the original Turn to Stone. Anyone know of a live version of County Fair?

Love your #1. Very “deep 70s” sounding, in the best possible way. So many styles covered. “Dreams” and “Days Gone By” are personal favs but they’re all good imo.

I recall the first interview I saw with Joe, late '70's. Couldn't figure out just how sober/stoned he was, and yet hilarious at the same time... but also thinking dude, you're not going to make it past the '80's. He did, he does, and with style- lot of respect for those who survived. Anyway, agree with your ranking except would put "But Seriously Folks..." at #1. May have already been said, but it's been called the best album the Eagles never made. Joe shines, front and center. One of my favorite late '70's releases... the production, range of material and mood sums up the best of those times. Uh oh- here comes a flock...

Love Joe Walsh. Songs for a dying planet has a great heavy song called Coyote Love and some humorous guitar heavy tracks. Revisit that album Pete I think you might find it quite good.

Really dig the Joe Walsh discography . Such a gifted guitarist with an oddball sense of humour. He is very entertaining live My faves are
    1 - So What
    2 - Smoker you drink
    3 - But Seriously folks
    4 - Barnstorm
    5 - The Confessor

Barnstorm is my favorite though I'd love to know why he made it so acoustic. And on Smoker You Drink he gave up several songs to the other guys in the band though I like that record too.

One of the funnier NASCAR related campaigns was a UPS series of commercials where musicians reworked their songs to convince driver Dale Jarrett to Race The Truck. Joe Walsh was one of these, and in my opinion the funniest. He spoofed Life's Been Good.
That big brown truck does 185,
I wanna see Dale get in and drive,
It's like a race car with room in the back,
I wanna see it out on the track!

Couple of things on this one. "Mother Says" on Barnstorm is a great track and got radio play in Philly. "Rivers (Of the Hidden Funk)" is on There Goes the Neighborhood and is probably one of my favorite songs of all time. That got a lot of radio play in Philly and was supposed to be on The Long Run but Lords Henley and Frey nixed it!
