  • Finally, Villa-Lobos receives his due from his countryman, in this fantastic box featuring the São Paulo Symphony (and various soloists) conducted by John Neschling and Roberto Minczuk on BIS (1830/32)--and you get seven discs for the price of three!

They have that converted train station lobby hall in Sao Paolo. It has magnificent acoustics. Like the Concertgebouw good!!!

Dave, São Paulo Symphony Orchestra will play in Carnegie Hall in October, 2022. I I've heard many of the Villa-Lobos' Choros and the Bachianas Brasileiras with this orchestra and also with City of São Paulo Symphony Orchestra conducted by John Neschling (he is Brazilian!) and Roberto Minczuk. It is great music indeed!

Another enthusiastic review that makes me want to wear out my credit card! Sadly, though, I must relay the news that Alf Heller passed away a few weeks ago. I was so informed by his niece, and have no further information.

Thank you for this review. Your reviews are fantastic as always and very helpful for a deep understanding of classical music. You're so lucky: the Villa-Lobos set with Villa-Lobos conducting his Bachianas is almost impossible to find now...I wanted grab it but I never found it. I've got the EMI set with Enrique Bátiz instead which is very good...but this from BIS is astonishing ...I agree completely! Kind Regards from Italy

Dave, could you please make a video about Spanish guitarist Narciso Yepes' two-box set of solo and orchestral recordings for DG? It's just a suggestion, because I'd like to know what you think, if anything. Thank you.

Great review, Dave, too bad Villa Lobos is so neglected in the concert hall, it's such colorful uplifting music. I remember an amazing recording with MTT and the New World Symphony that got me hooked!

Yes, the MTT is excellent (except for the spurious glockenspiel parts he adds.

Great review and I’m certainly be buying that set. Lovely to hear mention of my old pal Al Heller who first came across in the late 1990s on the old Classical message boards. He was a kind and funny man of great musical conviction. I think of him every time I hear HVL name.

Great info - very helpful. An excellent single disc is the Tilson-Thomas/New World Symphony one on RCA. One of best things, I think.

Thank you for this video, Mr. Hurwitz! The concept of choro is in fact hard to figure out , even for us Brazilians, because this genre of music is a mixture of European and African dances that emerged in Rio de Janeiro, second half of the 19th century. Rio was the capital of Brazil at that period and a melting pot of cultures. In general, choro is known by its polyphony, elements of improvisation and virtuosic display, and was played by street musicians. Here you may listen to good examples of choros: th-cam.com/video/-DnNbjveiJA/w-d-xo.html
P.S.: Villa-Lobos wrote good transcription of Bach's music, just in case if you want to mention it if you start a series of videos about 'GOOD Bach transcriptions'! Villa-Lobos recorded some of it in 1958 with Violoncello Society Inc. based in NY. Here is the link for it: th-cam.com/video/blk_iJMV6n4/w-d-xo.html

Thanks very much. Like I said, it doesn't help to try to explain it (in terms of what VL did in his Choros pieces), but they are wonderful nonetheless!

Great review of great music. I esp. like choros #7 and the Quintet. The idea of both works, especially BB makes me think about the Strathclyde Concertos...just because of possible inspiration. Ever thought about a writing on HV-L?
