I'm a mechanical engineer with 40 years of experience and learn something new every time I watch your show! You have a fine mind. People would do well to learn how you process and decern information. You are a natural. Thanks for your shows.

    I've run old school heavy wrecker for 28 years. Mount two double fluted air bags on the back axle with an adjustable pressure regulator. You can shift as much weight to your steer as you want and you wont lose any braking ability. Love your build.

      Someone else mentioned doing that same exact thing. i dismissed it because i wanted to put it on another chassis but i am warming up to the idea of putting air bags on the walking beam.

    I have a tendam wrecker with a Zacklift 403. We have the front axle set up 500lbs below the legal axle weight. It helps with the front end. I recently split the rear air bags and added a dual gauge and a regulator in the cab to take air out of the front drive axle. every 10psi works out to about a 1000bls more on the steers. Love your videos

    Nothing wrong with your tow rig. No it's not the latest greatest "rotator" but it does what you need it to do and I don't think you have ever lost anything have you? As long as you know it's limitations and how to use it then use it till you can do better. Those old camel back rears are the best for log trucks or off road applications. Not so much for over the road trucks. I pulled logs with Mack and Ford trucks and never had trouble. I drove a CL 9000 with a 3406 Cat in it. Had the camel back and would handle a 110,000 whole tree Morebark chipper with no problems. Rough on the ol back though.......

    When I worked in the field servicing equipment, I used a dry slide Molly based lubricant on telehandelers and forklifts that were used outdoors. The boom is supposed to have Teflon inside of the tubes. It took a can and a half of spray lubricant for a tele with a 65' reach. It shouldn't be squeaking like that.

    You're not afraid to tackle the big jobs. It's a good thing, everything you work on is big. I'm looking to buy a rollback for personal use. A lot of Fords out there and I want a diesel. I hear the 6.7 engine is a good engine. Any thoughts?

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      the first thing i would ask wyatt is "what is the heaviest vehicle you want to haul?". that will direct you to what truck is best. the f550 rollbacks top out at 19500 lb gvwr. they will weigh right about 15000 lbs (depending on cab configuration, diesel or cas, 2 or 4 wheel drive and options). leaving you with a 4500 lbs load carrying capacity. as far as what brand....i love ford trucks but if i was looking at that size medium duty, the ram 5500 would be my choice. my opinion is the 6.7 cummins is a far better engine than the 6.7 powerstroke. the cummins is so much easier to work on. i have absolutely no interest in the isuzutrash in the new gm mediums (4500 / 5500). you may find that the larger 22,000 lbs to 26,000 lbs gvwr trucks are far cheaper to buy, weighs in about the same, has much larger brakes, and typically have a 21' rollback. the international 4700 is one that many people love. this is very good reliable truck. you will likely find more of them with the t444e engine than the dt466. regardless, both good reliable engines. in the hills we prefer the longer stroke of the dt466 and air brakes. automatic transmissions are pretty bullet proof in the international and freightliner medium duty trucks...cant think of a bad one.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      i cant speak on different states, only on ohio and i am not a pro at that. i am going to talk just about a single unit without a trailer because there are some exceptions when you tow a trailer. you can drive a "commercial vehicle" with a gvwr of 26000 lbs or less without a cdl. whether or not it has air brakes does not matter. a "commercial vehicle" having a gvwr of 26,001 lbs or more requires a cdl. if that same truck has air brakes, you must also have an air brake endorsement on your cdl. if you are driving a truck for "personal", "non-commercial" use the gvwr has no bearing and you do not need a cdl. hope that was helpful.

    That telehandler needs to be painted RED.
    That way you can have a new meaning of to always stay RED.
    You know like most of this country is.

    they dont know the pain of the walking beam on a wrecker or the slide of a front axle nasty in the snow was allways going to fab a Copple air bags on the back axle allways carried a copple 3x5 x4ft plus hardwood timbers to run under the frame in place of that truck frame peace the wood stops the chain from slideing around on the steel and frame and stays in place better try it once you be sold happy tow is the more tricks you know

    Only thing I see wrong with the tow is the DOT says the safety chains have to be separate from the lifting device.. What I use to do was hook it from the D rings on the tow truck to the tow vehicle.. other wise good job for you and wifey

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      i agree. i thought it made sense to go straight to the truck but the old timer made a good point that it would have more control over the truck if the lift broke. i want to make a "chain keyhole" and tray to hold the extra chain while having the keyhole to set the length.
