  • The Shoals of Herring. A documentary film based on a 1950s Radio Ballad called `Singing the Fishing' by Ewan MacColl, Peggy Seeger and Charles Parker, about the rise and decline of the herring industry on the east coast of Scotland and East Anglia. Contemporary footage of the fishermen at work is intercut with interviews and archive photos, clips from John Greirson's DRIFTERS, Harry Watts' NORTH SEA, and Campbell Harper's CALLING HERRING. Traditional folk songs are used throughout.

Something that most people don't realise is that both drifters and trawlers formed a second British Navy (during the past 2 world wars, and did everything from escort duty to mine sweeping . And if I remember correctly it was a trawler that won a VC it was a trawler that also captured a German submarine and was also the longest serving warship in the med minesweeping around Malta .Not to mention crossing the Atlantic to defend the coasts of America against submarines when war was declared by them .( please read When Trawlers go to war and also The lilliput fleet) and then I think that more people would give them the credit and thanks they very rightly deserve .

That was produced 43 years ago.. (1972).. one of those guys first went to sea in 1892, we are looking at 120+ years of remarkable history, with a conservation message that we still haven't grasped. we are still inventing bizarre rules for bycatch and still overfishing to this day.

I struggle to understand the comment about overfishing when we still have a viable, regulated and managed herring fishery in 2016.

Ur tag suggests you are a fisherman so maybe you know more than me. But if there are herring around it is because of restrictions brought in in the 70s and 90s.
