I love my Trilobite! I leave the knives to the James Bonds, Crocodile Dundees and the Chefs under water...

I've had a long sorted history with dive knives and I should really have followed my first instructor's model of not carrying anything sharp (he'd certified thousands of students and had been diving since close to the beginning of scuba). My first problem was losing a number of knives because they'd get knocked somehow and come out of the scabbard . Once when diving in Mexico, I had a knife fall out and another diver found it and put it in his game bag. While exiting out on the rocky coast somehow the knife became imbedded an inch into his calf (not a good thing to happen in a remote part of Mexico). Feeling guilty led me to abandon knives, but having a paranoid fantasy of being hooked by a big game fisherman keeps me carrying a line cutter. One other advantage of line cutters stems from how we combine Caribbean cruises with diving (luxury, great food, and inexpensive scuba charters) . The advantage is there's no way they'll let you on board a cruise ship with a killer knife, but they've never given me any trouble about the line cutters (and rationally they shouldn't because it'd be very difficult to harm someone with one). I think the same would be true about airlines, but I (now) try to avoid any conflicts with the TSA (long story), so we just put them in our checked baggage.

I personally like using the aqua lung argonaut, I have it mounted upside down on the front of my bcd. It really comes in handy for trash cleanup, the pointy one i have might be handy if i ever have to wrestle and alligator here in Florida. I never thought to look under the rope on the handle, just when you think you know your gear lol. great video as always

There are cutters with ceramic or titanium blades and the Mares one has even one movable arm so you can cut thicker ropes. So they will do almost any job that might realistically come up - and as a travelling diver you don’t have to worry about legal restrictions on knifes while flying or diving abroad.

I'm a one of each type of person too, knife, net cutter, shears.
The old fashioned Rambo knife has sentimental value, the other two cut better.

I'm the Trilobite kinda guy. I just want an emergency option for webbing and fishing line, without much risk to my hoses and body. The Trilobite cuts well and is safe. I wear mine on the strap of my wrist computer. Don't underestimate the thickness of rope a Trilobite can cut. I've had a little rust on mine, despite coating the blade in silicone. Go for the titanium or ceramic blades is my recommendation.

Good video. I take 2 cutters: a Halcyon H Knife in a sheath on my belt and a Trilobite on my wrist. The Halcyon I can reach with either hand but it's out of the way when not needed, and as I don't intend to take on any SPECTRE agents underwater the 2 1/2 inch blade is perfectly adequate. The Trilobite is actually much the better cutter and hooking the line in and just pulling is an easier action, and safer. As for rust, I've done about 100 dives with my Trilobite and the blade looks like new. It just gets a basic rinse with the rest of the gear.

That’s a lot of cutting tools. I dive alone and I just have a 8.5cm Salvimar Stiletto knife on my belt.

I am a both knife person. Line cutter on my shoulder strap, knife on the inside leg. Knife is blunt tip because poking through my wet suit on accident would really ruin the dive. Line cutter because if needed I want something that could get next to someone without cutting them or their gear.

Hi, how about using the spanner function on the Argonaut while sheathed - nice grip and no danger of cutting yourself. Plus the paracord is a great for when you need to fix or rope something, Argonaut all the way, great multitool 🙂

I hear claymores are all the rage if you want a bit of lead off your belt. Use them in place of a P or V weight with BPW setup for a badass ninja turtle look.

I would gravitate towards/recommend a 4 foot kata style Damascus folded titanium blade…clearly a superior choice.
Pro tip: mount it to your backplate and brandish it like Wesley Snipes does in the movie series Blade!

Actually, you can do it even better that what you show in the video. I´m a professional stage rigger, so I have a good knowledge and practice with ropes; and of course the first thing I did after purchasing my first Trilobite was testing how far could I go with my new toy and my stock of ropes...
From a fishing line to 6 mm (around 1/4 inch), the Trilobite cuts like through butter, as you show in the video. But then, and up from 6mm to the 12,5 mm (1/2 inches) ropes we use for rope access, it takes a little more pull, but the Trilobite cuts without big problem; actually, I do carry a Trilobite in my harness to use it as a safer tool than a pointed one to cut the ropes and safety lines of a victim while doing rescue manouvers.
And the icing on the cake: with a little effort, and turning the rope inside the blade´s groove, you can actually cut through the 16 mm (5/8 inches) ropes we use to pull some loads and things up while working in the rigging...
All of this, of course, working on DRY ropes; perhaps with wet ones things may be different, but I don´t think the difference would be so great.
Nice channel, and very good advising!!

I love knives. I always have both a folding work knife and a folding gentleman's knife on me on the surface. But knives are tools with a purpose. While I like a big manly knife, they're just not the best for scuba diving. You can't cut fishing lines off of animals with a double edged blade. You'll cut the poor creature. The same is true if you need to cut someone out of a BCD. The Trilobite Eezycut is far, far better suited for that.
If you insist on carrying a big double edged blade, get both so you can pick the right tool for the job at hand.

G’day Mark, You have very informative TH-cam vision, which I think is great.
One thing you need to work on is your UM SOUNDS in this video you UMED OVER 150 times.
Most people don’t notice it, but being an educator for many years in the military I notice these things.
All in all I think you do a great job of informing new and old Scuba diver alike. Keep up the good work.👍😀
    Cheers
    Mark W.

I was happy to have a knife when my regulator got a bit tangled in the Kelp. But I alway carry the Trilobite. I carry both a knife and the trilobite.

I was tought that to be sure to handle every situation you should have 1 high and 1 low. So i have a cutter on the computer strap and a knife on my leg.

Trilobite for me ... the Argonaut would make me feel like I'm expecting more than just diving like maybe preping for an undersea ninja war or something along the lines of Rambo meets aggressive Trigger fish. Anyone for sushi.

My first time using the trilobite I used it to save a crawfish tangled in line I found at 27ft I took it too the surface to my dive instructor because I didn’t have a knife he brought me the trilobite I saved the little dude and let him go right there I was sold on it because it was safer than trying to use a sharp open blade near the creature

Trilobite all the way. There in no need for the Rambo knife, it is too cumbersome, not good for travel and it is made with titanium which is horrible to sharpen.

When replacing trilobite blade put some silicon grease on it. Problem solved!
(they rust at the contact point of blade and plastic where it does rinse well)
