With almost 10 million views, the Doug White King Air video has been the most popular video on the FS MaNiA Channel by far. I was pleasantly surprised receive an invitation to visit Doug and his family in Archibald, LA this past July 2022. I wondered if Doug would be open to an on camera interview? I asked and Doug said, "bring your stuff".
YIKES!!! I'm not a seasoned interviewer. This project was definitely outside of my comfort zone but I was not going to pass up the golden opportunity to talk to Doug about the King Air video's many questions and comments (currently 17,000) pertaining to his role in landing a King Air after the pilot suddenly died within 10 minutes after takeoff. I packed up all the gear I could fit in my baggage and headed to Monroe, Louisiana.
My wife and I were both mesmerized by Doug's recounting of his harrowing experience on that Easter Sunday in 2009. We also found out more about the flying Doug did immediately following the incident, going on to earn his Instrument, Commercial, Multi-Engine, and King Air type ratings. If that's not enough, Doug talks about the new MGM movie, "On a Wing and a Prayer" starring Dennis Quaid as Doug White scheduled for release Easter 2023.
I am extremely grateful to Doug and his amazing wife Teri for their "off-the-hook" southern hospitality and for sharing their story with us. I hope you enjoy the finished product. Kindest regards, Tim

A couple of years ago I started watching TH-cam videos and got hooked on it. It took me a while to find my genre and I noticed that after just watching the videos that showed up when I logged in that there 2 types that I was watching more than the others. Tornados and Airplanes. I don’t stories that end in tragedy so with my 2 topics the ones that ended positively were few and far between. One day I stumbled across Doug’s story and since my name is Doug it caught my eye so I watched it. I was fascinated with every bit if his “Incident” and I bet I’ve watched the actual flight that happened on Easter Sunday 30-40 times. No joke. I’ve watched the one where all the people that were involved that day got together to each of their parts that they played that day to help Doug land safely a handful of times probably. And just now I watch this awesome interview. Doug should get his own channel in here and become a story teller. He would get millions of subscribers with whatever stories he would want to tell. Of course it wasn’t all happy moments to this story. He lost a younger brother that passed way too early in life and Pilot Joe that was obviously a very good man who passed doing what he loved. Ironically without these horrible things happening then none of us ever know Doug White and all the others involved. You know Doug would much rather not be known for this and still have his brother & Joe still with us. But since we don’t have any say so on people leave us we still have to live and go in the direction we are sent in. As good as Doug was at making us kind of feel what he felt that day I still can’t wrap my head around how focused he stayed when he just buried his brother and dies right in front of him and he and the people he loves the most in the world are in unimaginable situation that only he can get them out of. This what movies are made of lol. So so many things had to be aligned perfectly for this to have the ending that it did. We can think God for that. He had everyone needed for this to end happily in the right place at the right time. Thanks for reading book i just typed lol. I’m too tired to proofread so I apologize for all the typos and words left out but you can figure it out.
    Great Story!

(OCF) and Williston, Fl, (X60) my home base...I did some damage on landing but I made it with help from my CFI on the ground & a little left crosswind to help raise my wing on touch down, I then sat in the middle of the runway and cried like a baby, and did not fly again for a year. I would disagree, it was more like 70/30. I'm a multi pilot and the time it takes to get your head around multi engine ops is very short. It's more about training for when things go wrong and understanding your aircraft fully. Obviously the king air is a bigger plane but it's fairly straightforward if you are a pilot and understand the basics. I'm pretty sure most pilots could get it down, especially on a long runway. Obviously adding in all the stress and startle factor does play a huge role. Not trying to take away what he did I'm just saying I don't think it's anywhere close to 10%

I completely agree with you. I copied the number "10" because that's the number that some random pilot gave as the odds of successfully landing. If you've piloted a plane, then you would have a basic understanding of how to keep it level and what to do. 70/30 sounds better, definitely. Thanks.

They missed so many opportunities in this movie by changing things and cutting things out. His whole amazing manuever of holding the controls with one hand while trying to reach the control on the captain's leg (RIP cap). His funny response to the control about the autopilot...the whole exchange during the landing that was still done by instructor on phone ---> to control ----> to Doug. His question on where to taxi the plane...him telling his wife to figure the door...all those little things and some of the amazing things he picked up so fast during the whole ordeal as he started to get confident, like how he started talking shaken and confused and slowly started to use the right term to refer to his plane and confirm all the instructions on the radio. It's so much more interesting than the crosswinds and storm drama cause it's simply amazing examples of the whole God helping theme. Would be so good to have one of the controllers or even the little girl comment on that during the movie to call the audience's attention to how amazing is.
Another thing that is amazing is how he knew there was something wrong with the autopilot that kept the plane in the climbing config and he knew the plane could stall...or how he kept asking about when to get flaps before the controllers even got to it.
The movie made Doug look a bit less resourceful and smart than he is for drama but these traits they ignored is a big part on why his story is so amazing.
Last of all: where to taxi this plane?

I tend to agree the factual events as they truly unfolded were by in large much more gripping and far more interesting/entertaining than anything Hollywood could dream up. You just can’t make that stuff up.
I’m not sure why they felt the need to insert a tropical storm into Florida during the month of April??? At any rate, I’m happy the movie gives the family some well deserved credit for holding onto their faith to survive against all odds.

Just an incredible story and Doug is to be commended for acting cool and professional in a situation that could have gone very differently. Also the best quote I’ve ever heard- “If I’m going to die, I’m going to die trying not to.” It’s the three most important rules which he nailed - aviate, navigate and communicate. His first priority was to control his plane (get the autopilot out of climb), then navigate and his communication was fantastic. His focus on these exponentially increased his odds. Textbook flying and should be shown to all new / aspiring pilots as exhibit A of the most critical phase - aviate - control your aircraft in stabilized flight worry about navigation and communication once you have control.

Both of our pilots got extremely I'll shortly into our flight. The first officer had to go lay down & the Captain was barely well enough to fly but not as I'll as his copilot. Everything ended well, but I would have been in one seat or the other & was preparing myself for a terrifying experience. When I saw this gentleman's story, my teeth were quenched the whole time. What amazing interview!
I saw the story on “Pilot debrief “ and then saw this interview. Such a terrific story of God’s protection for this man and his family!! And on Easter Sunday even!!!
Many blessings to this exceptional gentleman!!
I just found the movie on prime, never heard a thing about it.
However having done Wyatt Earp with Dennis Quid I swore I would never pay a single penny for a movie with him in it EVER.
On our set he was rude & abusive to everyone and even ‘man handled’ me!!!
I personally would like an apology from the jerk. I know that he was addicted to drugs at the time, and I know he has now “found God” etc etc etc.
Having had addicted family members I know full well that you make amends to those you hurt…. But I was a little pion.
