I have been a hand quilter for years , but watching Bernadette got me into hand sewing in a way I never expected.... I get so excited when I hand fell a seam or repair a button hole ( I made my eldest daughter a full Edwardian apron and cap from scratch with tiny wee stitches ). Watching Bernadette has also changed the way I hand sew my quilt tops -- if you want to sew, just do it . Even if you make yourself cotton dish towels, doesn’t have to be fancy, but you can look at them with pride

You should give sewing a try. You will be surprised at how simple it can be, especially hand sewing. Even if you don't make anything huge, the satisfaction of just putting a couple of pieces of cloth together might surprise you.

@@patriciaburr4826 do it! And then keep doing it. The only difference between you and Bernadette is that you haven't picked up the needle yet. Every experienced seamstress picked up a needle for the first time at one point. And as long as it gives you a feeling of satisfaction, you should keep sewing. It's a very accessible pastime, and I think having even basic sewing skills is a great benefit.

I learnt patchwork last year in lockdown and made 4 (plus another for a friend’s child) cushions based on Hogwarts Houses. I worked on them when I had insomnia. All done by hand and I even learnt how to put in zippers. This year I made an epic cushion (again in lockdown insomnia) of the Breaking Benjamin emblem with pattern and colours inspired by their Ember album. It was extremely daunting. I’ve never sewn clothes but I find hand sewing very calming. You can’t use a machine in the dead of night. And I’m terrified of sewing my fingers to the machine.

But I kept going and now I can bespoke pattern draft a historical suit and make it. I'm wearing trousers, a shirt and a waistcoat not THAT I MADE - which still blows me away.

Good on you, sir. My ex-wife was a textile artist and fashion designer - very talented - and I helped her with all her projects from making the cloth and designing the pattern, pinning it down and cutting it out. learned a lot about fashion, etc., and she taught me how to dress. I supported myself as a carpenter and there is no difference between assembling a home from a plan (pattern) and assembling a garment from a pattern (plan). Just different tools, techniques and materials.
I have a top quality sewing machine but an apartment so small I can barely store it, let alone use it. I have accumulated a top quality wardrobe from second-had stores - cashmere jackets, silk shirts, designer shoes in buttery soft leather, fedora hats, antique walking sticks - but the hillbilly paradise I live in leaves me all dressed up and nowhere to go. Literally.
This town is so dangerous I have to go out armed and sport more of a "combat classic" both as armour and for concealed carry.
The wardrobe standard here is "white trash slovenly" and the obesity rate far exceeds the national average. I'm pretty sure a well-dressed man in my town would be treated like the "pretty boy" in a dark, violent Western and have a violent, humiliating and gruesome end.
(By the way, I came here from somewhere else to do a project then got kind of trapped. Yes, I am trying to get out of here to somewhere more civilized but I am old and health and money have been some limitations.)
My goal is to find somewhere with a Swing Dance scene and a competent dance partner willing to go or currently going vintage of that era. I just hope our economy and culture remain stable so I can find and relocate to that place ... and dance myself into the Apocalypse.
I watch Bernadette, Karolina Zebrowska, Morgan Donner, Rachel Maksey and others to keep my interest alive and to inject some beauty into my life ... a quality missing from this town and from the modern world in general.
When I do get a chance to dress well it feels SO GOOD - the clothing is just of such better quality, fit, and design.
Keep 'em flying and have fun. Cheers

Aww it seems Ms Banner still doesn’t really appreciate how much her success is due to just how charming she really is. I appreciate the need to balance having a public persona versus your personal life and love the CosTube community and always want the creators to take care of their mental health over being a machine in turning our content. @@tK-be6ns you can't stay relevant that way. TH-cam won't push your content if you aren't constantly rolling it out. Bernadette got lucky when the algorithm picked up one of her videos and recommended to a bunch of people. That's how she grew so fast. She went from pretty small to over 100,000 subs quick and once you do that if you keep the grind up you'll hit a million rather quickly. She didn't just then slowed down so her her growth slowed with it. But, at a certain point you can still make enough money if you can keep those subs watching and of course almost all of her videos are paid sponsers now.

I recommend it to many You tube makers, because she is what I concider a consumate you tube video maker. i would like to point out her music selection is spot on. She writes and edits her commentary, instead of blabbing on and on. If you find yourself watching her videos over and over you may realize, "It is her enthusiasm for her subject" that insires you, and makes you want to know more. Photography is amazing. She is really even better than she thinks she is!

    • @galev3955
      @galev3955 2 ปีที่แล้ว

She really has some magic, and maybe it really is her enthusiasm. I explicitly hated all fashion (also hated history as a subject in school) and knew nothing about sewing or dressmaking. And I stumbled upon her channel and was captivated while not understanding half of what was going on and now I am starting to grow an appreciation for fashion and history.

Maybe I’m different than most TH-cam watchers, but I rarely, rarely, click on something because of a title or image. Really enjoyed this interview. There is another You Tuber that I watch that has over 1 million subscribers. Her negative comments usually deal with asking her how much she spent to get the tools or equipment or whatever that she uses. And while she never discusses actual costs these people then state, "well I don't have that money". My point is that jealousy and envy play a definite role in those that check the thumbs down button or post negative comments. So sad. I would hope people would be pleased at someone's success.

I recall specifically how sort of uncomfortable she was when launching the Patreon. Yet, who has put more work into making quality content than she has?
Bernadette is the best. Amazing knowledge base (try her video about Broadway costuming businesses when COVID had just closed them), beautiful videos with super fun scripts (who else uses "anon" in a sentence these days?)

I’m a college senior who is graduating in December and currently applying to my first “adult” jobs, and I credit Bernadette with helping me rediscover my love of history and open my eyes to a career field I had forgotten even existed. When COVID shut everything down and kind of put any sort of performing arts administration job on hold (I’m a dancer first), it forced me to look around and think about what else there is out there that I want to do. I no longer feel locked into having to move to NYC and scrape by for the “experience” because I’m applying to museums and living history programs across the country. Sewing has helped me reconnect with my grandmother (I use her machine), my mother, and my own creativity in a way that I had never known was possible. I’m making my own dress to wear for my graduation and even though it won’t be seen under the gown, that accomplishment of wearing something I can be proud of is everything to me.

I love Bernadette’s channel because it is clear that onscreen Bernadette is not the same person, and it’s okay to create a character and allow us to inhabit the space of that character. Every now and then when she’s a guest on a video on someone else’s shadow and lets a swear word slip, I LOVE it. It’s smart business sense to keep her channel clean so that she doesn’t get demonetized. In many businesses they always say “be able to work clean” and she does. But my tiny grinch heart grew three sizes when she asserted in another video that calling a hot dog a sandwich was “a crock of shit.”

I loved Home ec in high school and wanted to go to college to be a home ec teacher. When I was 17 my mom came to me and said "you're not smart enough to go to college", the guy that I was dating "is going to ask you to marry him and you had better say yes if you know what is good for you". I said "yes". We moved to a college town and I used my Christmas and Birthday money and took classes. It took a little over 18 years but I got my degree. Unfortunately, there isn't a calling for Home ec teachers anymore.
