  • USC Shoah Foundation mourns the passing of Marta (Weiss) Wise, who was ten years old when she was liberated from Auschwitz, having endured the medical torture of Josef Mengele, along with her sister, Eva (Weiss) Slonim.
During World War II, Bratislava was part of the Slovak Republic, a puppet state of Nazi Germany. In 1944, 10-year-old Marta and 12-year-old Eva were arrested, and soon deported to the Auschwitz II-Birkenau death camp. Marta and Eva were sent to the medical experimentation block, run by Nazi doctor Josef Mengele (known today as the “Angel of Death”).
On January 27, 1945, the Red Army liberated Auschwitz. Upon hearing that they would be taken to Russia, Marta and Eva fled. It took three months to reach their hometown, where they found that their parents and most siblings had also survived. In 1948, the family immigrated to Australia.
In her testimony, Marta describes how luck, and the help of others, allowed her to survive.
“I think it's important that youth hear something from a survivor. And let's face it, I'm one of the youngest survivors, from Auschwitz, definitely. I don't think there's many my age. And I think it's important that they hear it from yourself” - Marta Wise

These testimonies are more valuable than any movie made about WW2. It is quite an emotional experience to watch these testimonies. I am so sorry these people had to go through these unthinkable attrocities.

  • @danielleizzo4044

She is so right. It can happen again. !!!! Spread the word and don’t forget.

❤😢. I saw online that this brave and gracious woman passed away last month. RIP Marta.

Marta has such a beautiful smile, her whole face lights up, I am watching this after the atrocities committed in Israel on Ot.7, 2023. As I watch her interview, I think about the age of her children and grandchildren now and where they were on Oct. 7th. They have a lovely and courageous Mother.

  • @potatopanda4079

The interviewer was not paying attention many times, the lady had to go over her answers over an over, it was really upsetting but, the story was remarkable. This lady is amazing.

  • @joansmith3492

Her father showed amazing smarts and guts to get most of his family through this. Marta showed that same courage. May she rest in peace.

  • @Carbonx007

This is my favorite interview only because she was 9 years old with the thought process of a full grown adult..she knew what was up.. 👏 👏 👏

This survivor and those like her are an inspiration. These testimonies should be on TV to remind the world of past horrors. I hope this lady is still with us and that her family are safe in Israel. Thank you Marta.

  • @sanaqamar1

She has passed three months before We are glad she could share her experience before passing. We should not forget these amazing people. Rest in peace

Marta was not only a worrier, she was a WARRIOR. How she and her sister survived this horror as little children was mindblowing and unbelievable. The scene where she got Eva out of the Hospital as a little child of 17kg and pulled her through the snow so she doesn't get killed made me cry most out of all those terrible, horrible scenes she has described. Although it's so sad what has been Happening to their Family and siblings in the unspeakable Holocaust crimes, I was so glad to hear that she and Eva survived the Camp together - against all odds. It was not only due to luck, although it was an almost unreal amount of luck saving their lifes. But it was also the fact that these were outstandingly smart girls who made all the right decisions even at this young age, which they learned from their strong and courageous family and especially their father, who seemed to have been a very smart and caring man. This Story is extraordinary important and emotional, and everyone should listen to it. I feel like it has changed my life. Thank you so much, Marta, for telling us your story. Rest in peace, beautiful strong warrior Lady. ❤

These testimonies leave me speechless no matter how many I hear. It's amazing what the human spirit can endure.

What an incredibly strong woman. She was able to keep her wits about her and make decisions at the age of 10 that many adults were not able to do. Her story is invaluable, we must remember the atrocities that she and her family endured and honor the many innocent people that lost their lives. Marta was a hero.

  • @davidrutter9786

I watched her testimony & like all of the survivors she was able to tell her story with such details. May she rest in peace. Baruch Hashem.

Wow, Marta's story is amazing. Marta was so smart. Even as a young child she knew what she needed to accomplish in order to survive. There were so many miracles. Her father was so smart too. He was such a good man, and he helped his family surive, and he helped so manh people after the war. Marta's family is so beautiful, and I'm so happy she had a beautiful life. Marta, rest in peace, and God bless and protect your family always. We will never forget.

  • @irmagoncalves1915

What's so sad about listening to these survivors, who were only children back then is that they don't remember much about their happy lives as children before the war, it just shows you how that whole horrible hell even changed innocent kids forever

I am a Catholic. We consider the Jewish people our older brothers in faith. We love them very much. Shalom.

What a brave, wonderful woman. To have experienced what she did at such a tender age is inconceivable. I have often wondered about the other children in that photo, so thank you. I have heard the story of another girl in that photo, think her name was Eva. They’re all tragic, heartbreaking experiences. Blessings to you and your family. By the title I gather Marta has passed. May she find peace with her parents, brother snd other fs,ily members who passed. Words are not enough 🙏🙏🙏🙏👵🇦🇺

What an elegantly beautiful woman. It’s almost impossible to believe she has been through so much trauma in her live and so many more as well.I hope her future made up just a little for she and other survivors went through. I’m a 79 year old Welsh woman living in Colchester England for 43 years. My grandad fought in WW1 in the battle of the SOMME he returned unable to walk after standing for months in frozen mud trenches. He became a bespoken shoe/ boot maker in our mid wales town and often he could be seen in my dads work shed where he had a large wooden bench and made boots and shoes for disabled people pro bono(free) he never spoke of what he’d been through,he died when I was 13 he made my grammar school satchel and really smart brogues. Nobody told me until later.I’d passed my 11 plus he told my mum “ well of course she did”.when I found out I knocked at the front room door and told him thank you grandad,I love you,he coughed and said “you did well” my gran had died when I was 9 she was a healer a very special woman.oh dear I’m going on again I’ve been ill since 2001 in bed for the last 4+years. Bless all of you.

Thank you for your testimony Marta Weiss, and your words of wisdom. RIP

  • @MellowJelly

I can't imagine why the interviewer thought she should ever interrupt this woman but it was very irritating
