My 1915 will open with the lever and then snap the fired case out with an extra bit of travel. I determined that my gun needs a new trigger leaf spring which I ordered newly made from Wisners. It is arriving in the mail today. I've had my gun all apart and it is like a Chinese puzzle to reassemble. I had to make a drift pin to align the extractor cam to reseat the screw and then I used a C clamp to nudge it a bit. I also used a piece of hardwood to reseat the hammer mainspring. I greased some parts with RIG gun grease and the action worked much smoother. I wish I had done all the lever linkage while I had it apart.
i have several Steven favorites , and some 44 model's i have sleeve a bunch of them , not that hard to do , firing pin's i make my own , out of a stainless steel bolt , i have change 32 &25 rim fire one 's in to 22 LR , on one of my 44's I made it into a 22 mag , i like the the Stevens because they are very easy to work on , keep up the good work
The part that removes the empty case is called an extractor - ejector on a parts list I have. Some videos I've seen pop the empty case right out. Yours is acting as an extractor rather than an ejector. Perhaps your chamber is a bit rough. Your hammer is of the cross hatch variety. Some such as mine have a serrated hammer. I don't know that they are the same internally. I have seen them both listed for this model on a parts list for a supplier in NH. Pricey if you need to replace. Mine is worn and the hammer will not stay cocked. I assume there is wear on the hammer but it may be on the trigger. I haven't pulled it apart to check. I read that some of the parts were not case hardened and tend to wear. Your shots spread out in a vertical straight line is usually a result of breathing rather than the gun or the ammo according to a US Army marksmanship guide I have. Try taking a deep breath and holding it before you squeeze off the trigger. Don't hold it too long as that also causes problems.
Good to see you! Was beginning to think the old age got ya!
Nope. Life happens.

Yeah. Parts are still available for this rifle. That's a good thing.

Check for a weak hammer spring.
