The production on this song makes perfect sense when you keep the title and subject matter in mind.
The narrator is having a tough time expressing a heavy sentiment that they don't necessarily want to express, but feels they have to. No matter what the person writes, all they see is "Either way you go." which is why it's repeated 5 times; the same number of lines written on the post card. It's something so strong and "permanent," yet it's written on something so impersonal as a standard postcard; the kind of thing you get at a gas station for a quarter and probably depicts some generic landscape with bold watercolor brushstrokes and a glossy finish. Keep the imagery in mind.
The guitars on the track are narrowly spaced in the mix between the left and right speakers and are bathed in a wash of reverb and delay to blend the tones together. The bass is compressed so that you con just barely hear the attack of the string when notes are being held. The vocals are mixed down to blend closely with the rest of the mix; especially during the "Either way you go." parts. The drums are compressed so much that they sound artificial and cheap -- like a gas station postcard.The entire mix is all very flat in that way. During the choruses you can hear the mix open up a little in the center and a second distorted drum loop appears. It's a more personal and introspective portion of the song where the narrator hasn't overthought and overproduced a set of lines to say whatever it is that just won't come out right no matter how it's said. An indicator of the over-thought lines comes instrumentally in the verse before the refrains of "Either way you go." where the narrator laments the permance of what's being said. You can hear the bass stuttering; is that a simple rhythm choice, or a choice to express the writing and erasing of lines again and again because the ink is so permanent once it's sent? In the second verse, it's permanent no matter how it's said; so instead you can hear the compressed feedback of a guitar screeching in a mostly empty space. The chord progressions in the song are also unresolved between instruments. Everyone is playing on the same scale, but each of the instruments hits a note here and there that is not in a standard scale. That's somewhat common in a Balance And Composure song, but it adds a layer of suspense and a feeling that something is unresolved constantly throughout the song.
I know a lot of people didn't like the production choice on the drums, but producers are artists too. When you put everything in context, it's actually a really cool production choice. Just look a little deeper.

I can see this growing on me once the full effort comes out, but I won't lie that it's not the sound I was hoping for.
the electric sound of the drums is so different from previous albums. I hope it's just on this song because I love Bailey's style and the sound he brings to B&C is a crucial element for me.

Yep, me too! I'm loving this, and it's exactly what I wanted coming off from TTWTWM.
a complete logical progression. the things we think were missing was this band getting their feet wet, being experimental. took the whole spacey indie alt rock sound to another level with this song. this is definitely a grower. much deeper and concise than anything they have done.
Who says he's not just using electronic drum pads? Bailey is love.

Lol it's not an electric kit, it's just hell compressed with very little reverb on it.
This is not an acoustic drum set; it's programmed.
Their progression since Separation is fantastic in my opinion. I love the feel of this track overall and I'm hoping they push the boundaries of their own sound even further with this release. One thing I hope this album has though is a few moments in it that call back to their heavier tracks off Separation. These guys have always killed it with their heavier tracks and id love to see how they can incorporate that into the even more mellow tone they seem to be going with this time around.
Gotta say, this wasn't what I was hoping for. Serious props to these guys for pushing their range though. As banging as this song would be with Baily on drums, this song is still all vibes. GIVE ME MOREEE

It's spacious. It's melancholy. It's creative. It's a big left turn for this band. It's odd to even think this is the same band that wrote 'Notice Me' I've dropped my expectations at the door and completely on board for this album.

whenever I listened to this song for the first time the other day I thought, "hm.. its ok". but these last few listens have really rubbed off on me. yeah its not their traditional sound but it's still sick and atmospheric. for everyone worried about the other songs sounding like this, I really highly doubt it. haven't ever been dissatisfied with Balance and so stoked for their new record!

Their first 2 EP's and separation, were amazing. The last cd was great but the vocials weren't loud enough imo. But this song is so repeatitive, their old lyrics were so much more. Ever song I was like can wait for this next part. This new song the next part is the same as the part they just sang. Still has an amazing voice. They can make music the music they want. I just wish it was similar to their old stuff. From 20009-2010

sure the electric drums might throw you off but i honestly wouldn't have it any other way. or.. imagine how huge and powerful this song will be live with an actual drum kit.
People who knock electronic drums are small-minded. The song is perfect for a drum machine. Definite progress. It's not going to be like this for every song and I guarantee you they'll make it fit well.

Have you guys found a new appealing territory to dig into as well as Title Fight with Hyperview? This is awesome. And also because from the very first moment I heard the drums type of sound (which is more likely to be a drum machine to me, in a good way. Just kidding Bailey, you´re and awesome drummer) I thought of John Frusciante´s work too.
P.D. : Bailey u need to make a drum-cam video of "Lost your name" because I still can´t get the drum kick pattern clearly. Keep up the fantastic job you guys are doing.

Balance and Composure murdered millions of angsty teens because they used electronic drums.
risky move concidering how the hardcore-gone-indie bands arent doing as well as before. i love the output of those bands much more than their generic hardcore output.
this is what i was into before i got into hardcore, so to me its a refreshing full circle as its what i am into now.
i love this, i just hate the WIll Yip seems to like to bury or blur out the vocals. production is otherwise tight as always. cant wait to hear the rest of the album.
I like the raw sound these guys create. Like a freshly stingy cut. This is too polished for me.
