The song was written by Mercy Sister Suzanne Toolan, who was teaching at a high school in the San Francisco Bay area. She didn't quite like the song, so she threw it in a wastebasket. One of her students retrieved it and convinced her to reconsider. I'm sure glad she did. And hey, it's got a great bass part.
Wow! While I am not Catholic, I am still deeply moved by this song! May all Christians around the world stand united, now than more than ever, in the power of the one true King!
@Joshua Lopez Martin Luther was adamant that the doctrine of justification is the doctrine on which the church stands or falls. I think that the Lutheran understanding of this doctrine is truer to scripture than the RC understanding, which is that justification is a lifelong transformation of the believer Lutherans believe that justification is a gift which we receive by grace through faith. When we are united with Christ through faith, His perfect righteousness is credited to us, and our sin is credited to Him. As Romans 5:1 states, we HAVE BEEN justified through faith. This justification serves as the basis for our lifelong transformation into more Christ-like people, which Lutherans refer to as sanctification. This transformation does not contribute to our justification, rather it flows from our justification.
It's amazing that the pipe organ can be used with an acoustic guitar at the same time. More churches need to learn from this rendition so more people can hear music like this.
How they sing this is the traditional way and the best way. Went to catholic school 1st to 11th grade. I love the music they had, now I’m skeptical about Jesus but I do miss the songs and the few good people
Always God bless us and let us help one another to back to normal our situation and back to school the children and youth. In God all things are possible po. From Lani D. Nepomuceno, Philippines
You know, this was sung at my father's funeral (very beautifully, by a family friend), so there will be a shadow whenever I hear it. But this rendition puts the hymn into a new light, so thank you.
I am the Bread of Life. ... I am the Resurrection. I am the Life. ... And I will raise you up on the last day. HAPPY EASTER, everyone ! For those who are watching this, I am looking forward to seeing you celebrate the Eucharist next Easter Sunday ! May God be with you !
Rice University had a chapel off campus that performed this song almost identically. I would grow up hearing it every year on Easter Sunday. It was always so beautiful with the harmony and the folk instrumentals. I miss it and it holds a profound place in my heart. ❤
My friends, these wonderful young people show us the secret to making beautiful music. Yes, music that is actually beautiful, such as this timeless hymn, helps. But the key is to sing with all of our hearts, with all of our power, as these young people demonstrated. And sing with a smile. You can really hear it! Excellent rendition!
This may be the most beautiful arrangement of I Am The Bread Of Life it has ever been my pleasure to hear. I am viewing and listening to your video seven years since you recorded it. So much has taken place in the lives of us all in the past seven years. In 2022 it is just as vital to be reminded of the promises of Jesus as it ever was or ever will be.
Excellent! I've been cruising the web looking for a version that wasn't so ... serious. (As an aside, I love how the blonde woman in the back on the right is so enthusiastic!)
I sent this video to everyone from my college choir (St. Anselm College, back in 1993) and everyone comments on that blonde woman.... Such joy... I hope she sees these comments... Her bliss brightens the world.
This is the USA, but yes it is wonderful to see. Archbishop Desmond Tutu is quoted as saying "I didn't know until I came to America that it was possible to sing without moving!"
@@gsaldana22 definitely not the smiling blonde who's smiling impishly.... To sing so beautifully you would have a rather serious face... Its the dark haired girl directly in front of the organist flanked by the bespectacled girls on her right and left
BRAVO and so many Thanks to each person involved in bringing this music to life. May OUR LORD Bless you and keep you all well and safe and may you all do great works in life. PAX+
WOW! That young lady in the middle of the back row...HUUUGE VOICE. Just beautiful. Thankyou, dear, and thank you , choir. Just breathtaking praise and aong.
@@fbagbey Yes, she is straight back from the conductor, against the wooden wall and the pipe organ, She is dead center, holding her hymnal high. Listen to the music and watch her, that is the huge voice.
Love this! This performance omits two of Sister Toolan's verses. Here are the lyrics: I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall not hunger; he who believes in me shall not thirst. No one can come to me unless the Father draw him. And I will raise him up, and I will raise him up, and I will raise him up on the last day. The bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world, and he who eats of this bread, he shall live for ever, he shall live for ever. And I will raise him up, and I will raise him up, and I will raise him up on the last day. Unless you eat of the flesh of the Son of Man and drink of his blood, and drink of his blood, you shall not have life within you. And I will raise him up, and I will raise him up, and I will raise him up on the last day. I am the resurrection, I am the life. He who believes in me even if he die, he shall live for ever. And I will raise him up, and I will raise him up, and I will raise him up on the last day. Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who has come into the world. And I will raise him up, and I will raise him up, and I will raise him up on the last day.
You will notice that the male pronouns have been subjected in this rendition. I wonder why? Do people really find it offensive that the original lyrics were - 'I will raise HIM up'?
@@Sparfucile "you" is more personal, makes it feel like the message is directly for each listener. It's also a nicer word to sing on since it ends in an open vowel sound.
We sang this for our great friend, Father Juan Leon, OFM, at his funeral at Mission Santa Barbara (where he is interned) in 1998. RIP to a great man. .
