Agree! We had the pleasure to have him here in Dortmund some 7-8 years ago for a AIDS- Benefice. Me in the chorus. This voice is so incredible big, it filled the whole concert hall to the last corner. But never strained or sounding pushed. And, when I remember, I get the goosebumps still nowadays. Greetings from Dortmund!
I had the fabulous opportunity to perform (in my high school choir) with this amazing man. We were all on stage with him and sang The Battle Hymn of the Republic. It was truly an amazing experience, and Simon Estes has an amazing voice even today in his 70's.
Indeed, I have a recording of this requiem with him in solo section, and in the FF section of the Lacrimosa, you can still hear his voice over the full orchestra, plus full choir, plus all the soloist!!! He is like the Mario Del Monaco of Basso regarding power!
This is so good on so many levels...I"m at a loss for words to adequately praise him. I cannot for the life of me think of a soprano, a mezzo and a tenor worthy to stand on the same stage with him in this performance. Maybe Price , Cossutto , Pavarotti and the Berlin Philharmonic under Solti or Karajan.
beautiful color and musical choices. for an opera singer, curious he sang this oratorio without the the score. sometimes singers can get their noses stuck in the score. bravo.
