    That "wagon wheel" might be a band from around a whiskey barrel.

    Beau, the first piece you found is a valve plate from a steam pump. That is why the two center round pieces are brass. It had two pistons that ran off steam and two for pumping water. Not a firebox door, and I have a feeling you know it wasn't. HH

    The cast iron piece looks like the front plate to a wood stove. Those would be air vents.

    Oh MAN!! there was a big fat cannon shell on there when you pulled up that wagon wheel hub. Well... maybe not, but it sure was fun fishing with you today Beau. You'll get'em next time. Thanks!!

    You are correct about the glass marble .they are made into marble sized ball for safe transportation to the glass manufacturers. I am alway glad to see your next adventure!

    The wagon wheel you got also makes me think of the bracing on barrels, where they put iron or steel braces around them to sturdy them.

    • @johndoe-nf1ty
      @johndoe-nf1ty 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see ^8^ Then a wagon wheel for sure then, Nods.
      If I may ask, in your opinion what would be the best places for a person who has just starting out using a metal-detector to go and search?

    • @johndoe-nf1ty
      @johndoe-nf1ty 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the advice, nods
      I see, there should be pletny of areas here then, as there are some old homesteads in my area which have been torn down and are on lad which neighbor's may allow me to metal detect.

    I used to live across from a railway station here in Sandusky, Ohio..the "Gandie Dancers" as they were called fixed the tracks and would roll marbles across the street to us..they always seemed to enjoy seeing us race for them. :) We would always look for more marbles (carefully) around the tracks and would fine them and lots of other treasures. :) Liked the video.

    First of all, keep up the great videos. Secondly, my father taught me that the marbles along train tracks are actually reflectors that were drilled then placed into old telegraph poles. Different colors were who owned the lines. Around here, we have mostly purple and green marbles.

    My brother and I were bush walking one day. We were scrambling through a cave-like rock overhang when my brother's nice Kabar knife fell into a deep, dirty stream running below. After weeks of unsuccessful attempts to bring the knife to surface using various methods, I ordered a neodymium magnet from ebay. One quick fish with the magnet in an old sock and I hauled his knife up. Mission accomplished!

    Beau, I have tried this myself. My magnet is on a pole, though. I was too leery of putting it on a rope because the rivers here in Texas are just cluttered with roots and trees. After seeing this though, u've inspired me to attempt this with a rope. Good show, sir.

    Aqua, the marble is likely out of a road sign. They were often made with marbles in them to make them more reflective while being inexpensive, fairly big type of signs amongst collectors though.

    6:57 That spoon looks silver gilded, probably pewter or something similar underneath it. late 1800's early 1900's likely if that is the case. The pattern of the spoon makes me thin it could be even early 1800's.

Also wanted to say that if you haven't figured it out those glass marbles that you are finding near the railroads probably come from the old railroad sign. They were like the old stop signs that had glass marbles in the lettering to make them stand out.

    That first item is a valve plate for a old reciprocating pump. The two round sectioned holes are where the valves go. There is probably a stud sticks thru the middle and the spring loaded valve sits on top. the valve itself looks like a saucer with a hole in it. The odd shaped hole is the intake or discharge port (I forget which). Worked on them for years. as it only has two small valves it was fairly small. The driver for the pump was probably a steam driven reciprocating engine (Think old steam driven train from the 1800s to 1950s. Commonly called a chug chug pump around here. Used in refineries,mills, US Navy, and would pump just about anything. When I retired I was still working on some that were 100 years old and they were still in use. Interesting find. Worthington Pumps was the mass producer of them 100 years ago but many since then.

  • @ToeCutter454
    @ToeCutter454 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    an easy way to keep the magnet clean from random shards is to just keep some zip-loc bags with you to wrap over the magnet, or some plastic shopping bags. just put the magnet inside the bag and it'll act as a barrier, then to just clean it off you just peel the bag off and it'll all be caught in the bag! if you're worried about the bag ripping through then you could always put a shop rag on first before the bag(or find some thicker heavier plastic and zip tie it on), it shouldn't impede the magnets ability to pull and may even help evading the smaller fragments and shards that just muck it up in the first place :)

    That clear marble might be from an old bottle, my cousin used to go bottle hunting back in Britain, and he found the odd one or two, the marble pushed up to seal the top (The marble sat in the neck of the bottle), I don't remember what the bottles were for fizzy drink of some sort seems to be the best I can remember, apparently kids would break the bottles to keep the marbles back in the day...That's what he told me anyway.

    I had a fishing magnet, about 4x6 inches in size, that twice I had to go scuba diving in that spot to retrieve the magnet. Even the heaviest ropes would not hold up without breaking, so I just marked the spots and retrieved the magnet later. So, watch out for that skinny polypropelene yellow rope you are using!
