Coral bells bring beautiful pops of color as well as coleus in a shade garden. Pansies are a happy, bright addition to shade gardens too

Yes, I am taking notes for what I’ll add to that area in the fall. Planning is half the fun!

Patty, your garden is looking great! 👏 A comment on the Ajuga, or bugle weed. I think the key word in the name is weed! I do live in Western Virginia in zone 6b, so of course accounting for different climates. We bought some 25 years ago to go under steps from the deck. It didn't like it there & moved out to the adjacent eastern facing flower bed with peonies, daffodils & tulips, and then proceeded into the grass! It gets regularly mowed all season long as well as walked on. Its still going strong. After about 3 years of only minor care of my flower bed due to back and knee surgeries, this spring, I have pulled out large plastic tubs full of the ajuga and carried to the compost bin! It was keeping the ground so damp around my peonies I almost lost 3 of my beautiful red ones that had also been there for 25 years. There are still a few stems coming up, so hopefully they will survive. When you first called it bugle weed it popped into my head that I thinkn the plant is prohibited in some places... So just a word of caution. It may be wonderful in Southern California. It is a pretty plant! Since this is a Sunday, I'll add a quick message...just like sin...it can be pretty and enticing but...😇

Your shade garden is lovely. I have a very dappled sun/shade situation in my front garden and it has been quite a learning experience to figure out what plants are best. Love the choice of ajuga. I'm a huge fan of ajuga. I had some tucked in a super shady area in front and after I'd had it for a year or two, I was able to divide it into several more clumps and it is spreading well where I moved it. I can probably divide it again in the fall, which makes me super happy because: Free Plants!

Beautiful! Love seeing Cyclamen outside!!! Here it is a houseplant!!! I have many little patches of Ajuga in our yard !!! It got planted all over by the Tornado last year. I try to dig up some every week! It is kind of pricey to buy and I probably have a total of 5 feet of it!!! Yay!!!

For a cheap but pretty blue tiny flower - What about sprinkling some forget me not seeds in autumn, you can thin out and they will flower late spring (my experience is in UK so research your seasons!) they continue to self seed (give them a shake when they are finished) and they fill out spaces in shade under trees & dappled shade.

Blue bell bulbs we use a lot of in wooded areas UK, they spread slowly. - good value for money.
It’s such a lovely space you have there!

Nice job, first time seeing your channel.. I’m in Glen Allen VA essentially Richmond VA and it’s 7b. My cyclamen is going great outdoors, made it through the winter and since its my first time with it in the ground too I’m looking forward to seeing when it blooms. Oh to be able to have chickens. So jealous. Ajuga is pronounced with a long ooooo sound. A-joooo-ga.. great ground cover and mine is in bloom too right now. :) happy gardening.

Hi Patty! I love the variety in your garden. We just had 2 days of freezing temps and I hope it will stop that now :) With a little cover all of my cold weather crops are looking great. Today I planted (inside) my usual few flowers; Zinnia, Marigold, Cosmos and I'm going to try Hyssop. Have you grown that? It sure looks pretty on the package!

I’m a new subscriber and I look forward to seeing your shade garden evolve. It’s already looking so beautiful! I’m currently in my second year planting a shade/part shade garden. I’m growing it slowing by dividing, propagating and moving plants. I didn’t realize that mandevillas tolerate shade. I had one in the part shade area of my garden and the leaves we beautiful but it didn’t bloom. I’m guessing it didn’t get enough sun. Unfortunately, it did not survive the freeze we had this winter here in Texas, zone 8.

I have a sister in the Houston area who lost several established plants as well. This is the first year for the Mandevilla so we shall see how it does. 🤞

All cyclamen go dormant in the summer I believe. It looks like you have the "persian" variety, which isn't very hardy outside the Mediterranean, so it may be an annual depending on your weather. There are other types you can find online that are a bit less showy but much hardier if you find it gets too hot where you live.

I'm researching shade gardens too, I love columbine flowers and hellebores. Have you looked into astilbe? It's definitely colorful

I love hellebores and astilbe! I also have lots of different Heuchera (coral bells) and love the foliage options.
