I didn't knew this masterpiece even existed, this song gave me goosebumps like no other. Freddie is a legend and i've been introduced to Montserrat Caballe. I feel a new rabbit hole coming!!!
The whole album "Barcelona" is amazing. Their voices together sound so beautiful. The live performances "How can I go on" and "Golden Boy" are also on YT in a remastered version.
Freddie Mercury was so much more than a rock singer, he was a brilliant musician, an excellent singer, songwriter, storyteller. He had an eclectic musical taste and the range to sing operatic songs. Montserrat Caballé was one of the most famous opera divas of the last century, she was famous for her very high soft notes. Freddie and Montserrat became good friends very quickly, they adored each other and Montserrat was brave enough to take the risk to sing with a rock star, because she recognized the Musician in Freddie instantly. There are 2 more songs at La Nit 88. The Golden Boy (that is even more dramatic) and How Can I Go On, worth to check them out. Freddie and his friend Mike Moran completed a full album with beautiful melodies for this golden duo.
Fantastic, thank you! Freddie & Montserrat Caballe did an entire album together in 1987, Barcelona. It was the FIRST time that singers/musicians from different fields of music, crossed genres to collaborate together (the first time professionally, anyway). As a matter of fact, when the album first came out, Pavarotti called it "the dumming down of opera"... but when Barcelona was so successful, pretty soon Pavarotti was doing his own Pavarotti & Friends project! Freddie & Montserrat (nickname Montsey) performed 3 songs from the album LIVE, at La Nit: "Barcelona" "How Can I Go On" AND "The Golden Boy" (This one is part opera, part gospel!) My FAV songs from the album, tho, are: "EXERCISES IN FREE LOVE" and "ENSUENO" The first song is a demo vocal exercise where Fred recorded himself singing Montsey's SOPRANO part, so she could hear what he envisioned it sounding like. Many reactors mistakenly think this is Montserrat singing when they hear it! The second is the companion/follow-up finished version... a duet where Fred's singing OPERATIC BARITONE, which Montsey said she "talked him into doing and gave him tips on". The two became best friends and ADORED each other. Montsey was one of just a couple people who Freddie confided in about his terminal AIDS diagnosis, which he was keeping secret. (He didn't even tell his Queen bandmates until 1989.) Montsey had been looking forward to them performing "Barcelona" together at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, and Fred confided to her that he wouldn't able to do it because he would be gone by then. Later on after Fred had passed and his commemorative statue was erected on the shore of Lake Geneva in Montreux, Switzerland, Montsey was present at the dedication with Fred's parents and his other loved ones.
They were a great duo -- and dear friends till the end. Mutual admiration and love. True, many on the Rock & Opera sides were baffled but for them both it was a win. Monserrat felt a new freedom; for Freddie it was a challenge he needed very much following his diagnosis. Interviews reflect their bond. In other solo work, Freddie did two songs for Dave Clark (formerly with the 60s group, Dave Clark Five) for a musical called "TIME." Both offer stunning vocals: IN MY DEFENSE and TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE (the latter re-released in 2019). Clark was so moved by Freddie's performance on TIME WAITS, it became a mission to find the original and strip it back from the big production number. In tribute, he recaptured the sheer singular power he remembered on stage.
This was part of the publicity build up for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. Freddie didn't make it to the live opening ceremony, but Montserrat did, and she duetted with him on screen at the ceremony. You need to check out How Can I Go On, the Golden Boy, Ensueno and La Japonaise from this album. 🙂
The Queen 🫅🏻 rabbit 🐇 hole 🕳️ is worth tripping and falling into head first!! The Barcelona album has duets with opera super star Montserrat Caballe & Queen frontman Freddie Mercury! Fred wrote the music & lyrics for the album barring THE GOLDEN BOY & THE FALLEN PRIEST (Sir Tim Rice wrote the lyrics for those two songs previously mentioned!
Nothing, I was going to listen to the music without talking, but I wrote a few words because it was Freddie's music. Hello teo🤚 I am a student studying classical music at university. Listening to and playing classical music every day was my daily routine, so I wanted to escape, but Freddie pierced my stuffy mind. A musician. Before they can play a piece of music for the audience, they practice countless times over and over again. It is a very arduous process. Only when the audience listens to the music and responds to any emotion with sincerity is their joy. I'm glad heaven knows that Freddie loves and enjoys listening to his songs. Teo~did a great job reacting too. 👍Thank you for listening to good music. 🥳
I'm from Barcelona.. Can you imagine those two artists singing to the land give you birth? I was in their live concert in Barcelona when I was 4 years old.. MAGIC! They are legends!
I Love your reaction … Montserrat is from Barcelona and the song was supposed to be sung at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona …. Freddie had to tell her that he wouldn’t be alive for the performance 🥲 I get goosebumps every time I hear this song … just beautiful…,the look on your face is priceless👍🏻😊🧡
This was the music video - check out the "live" version! :) Or do yourself a favour and listen to "The Golden Boy" by Fred and Montsy ... a gospel choir does the background! Amazing! :)
Just to let you know Freddie never left Queen … he was in fact the last one to take time to do his own work … the rest has already done theirs ( you may have got this misinformation from the film) Good reaction 👍
This has nothing to do with your reaction right now. For years I have been annoyed by the boring music lessons in our schools. The grade, if you don't take it to the extreme, is in the middle and doesn't spoil a promotion, the students can and do their "forgotten homework" in music lessons. There's another way. My children's dedicated music teacher discussed this album and Bohemian Rapsody for an entire school year. Conclusion No one did their homework, everyone worked together. This is how (boring") opera, music structure, singing was treated and nobody found it uninteresting. Apart from that, I also learned a lot.
