I just want to say thank you for making your videos; I appreciate your time and knowledge. After receiving my Nikon camera for Christmas I have been searching and searching, reading everything I can find to try and understand this baby. I must be thick headed because aperture and shutter speed is just like algebra; I just can"t wrap my brain around it. While watching your video, something clicked and it made sense, kind of lol. I had to keep pausing and going back because my head was thinking and figuring and I wasnt catching everything you were saying. For me, your videos are gifts, they are helping me use my camera to tap into what is already there inside of me, although I may never shoot for national geographic, I am happy to be able to shoot for me. My camera is the most precious gift I have received as it allows me to capture what my eyes see and move me. Thank you again. Kecia

Hello Spyros, I am an engineer by profession and just discovered some interest in photography. I bought a Canon 70D with a 18-135 lens and have started shooting around.
I am very new to photography so have been searching stuff around the internet to enhance my skills. I just came across your videos and channel and was totally glued to it.
Your videos (with examples) are so very good to understand. I have got a lot of insight into photography now and will keep gaining. Appreciate the work that you do and thank you very much.

Oh thank you for the PDF. FINALLY a visual training sheet. I keep getting advice to just go out and shoot. I do. I see problems with what I have shot but have no clue on what change in settings will improve the shot. I turn flip set everything thing in hopes to achieve correction. I have everything so messed up which leaves me in a state of confusion and a desire for a sledge hammer. But now I have a guide to direct me what principle needs adjustment. It is pitch black out side and I am so eager to get started. Like Christmas eve, won't be able to sleep. Now I can shoot the sledge hammer and make it my subject in stead of my camera smasher. Thanks so much!

Hello Spyros, I'm a new subscriber. I always loved photography but I never took it seriously until now, I recently purchased my first camera Nikon D850 and I want to get the most out of it. I've been watching tutorials and videos from many different photographers but I like the way you explain everything, it's easy for me to understand, I will catch up with all your videos little by little. Thanks so much, Ive been looking at a variety of different videos & couldnt seem to find any that explain the functions of the cameras fully. I came across your channel & have watched much videos you have posted & have learned so much in an hour or so. Before seeing this channel i was so frustrated with these settings & not knowing what im doing. I still need a bit more practice but i have printed your flowchart & will definitely use that as a guide. Great explanation & 1 more subscriber.

Spyros, thank you. I always get stuck when shooting in manual and will typically resort to auto modes. Thank you for explaining the thought process required for manual shooting and how to apply the answers to setting up the camera for the photo. You explanations are clear, relevant and welcomed. I use a Canon 60D, but would love to move up to the 6D or 5D Mark III.

As per the flowchart, I set Aperture mode first, and adjusted shutter speed accordingly to obtain exposure '0'. However, all the photos came with Subject Blur(even though they are stable, not in motion). Looks like we dont need to worry about the exposure when we are shooting in manual mode..
The immediate next day, I just ignored exposure and increased shutter speed, photo came as expected..

Hi Spyros! Thanks for the instructional video! You're great at teaching. I am trying to set my camera to :f/3.5 SS: 1/500 ISO 800 for reasons of a tutorial I'm doing to try off of pinterest and take photos manually for the first time on my Nikon D3200. I understand this is a beginners camera. I am just learning about the 3 critical pieces of taking a manual photo, and practicing adjusting them. So this is just a practice run for me. But the setting on my camera only goes down to f/5.3... any reason to this? any suggestions?

    Hello Spyros,
I am an avid follower of yours..
After going through previous session (please note I am an amateur Photographer since last 3-4 years, and already knew about most of the concepts by on-hands experience and reading online - google OR bloggers like yourself) I was taking few pics in my apt room in Ambient Light.. The thing is while trying to take the snap in manual mode - no matter how I set the ISO, Metering Mode, Exposure Compensation, Flash Compensation, Aperture OR Shutter Speed (Yes, I tried everything before asking..) the Room' Wall 'color' appears as 'Yellow Shade' in the PIC... though I can see (& ya I am not color blind ;) ) its a shade of 'Cream Color'..
Can you please advice on whats going on, is there any concept that I am missing..
Thanks a lot for the help in advance... and I am telling you, I follow few other Photographer Bloggers but You ARE THE BEST !!!
    Regards,
    -DS

Question ... I have a D300 . Lens is a basic 18-55 G ii ED . Ok so its spring here i made a few photo today . Some of theme are weird looks like the camera cant catch all de detail or something . I dont know how to explain . On the original view looks like a bunch of pixel are missing .. P.s .. Today i was working on learning sharpness . So yes as i zoom in my screen everything looks fine everything is fine but wen i cone back to normal size the picture looks fuzzy or something its like the picture is loaded with tiny pixel missing . In a way its kind of good looking . Only one picture is really affected . I have shoot a bridge with a big tree in background as i zoom in the tree everything is sharp but the bridge is also affected by the pixi problem as i could call it lol .. The problem in this photo is that wen i zoom in the little bridge those pixi stay there .. Its nothing ugly it kind of give a charm to it to be honest . But i want to understand what happen . I know i was testing a lot on every photo so maybe i crank up the shutter or the aperture too high or too low . My iso was 200. I hope that wen i see it on the computer everything is going to be fine cause its a really nice shot to me . Anyway thanks for your vids i like the way you explain i dont get bored and your humble .. Some photographer get me bored with their im so over everyone attitude . Im not saying they are not good just saying some attitude just dont bring me into listening . Thanks and sorry for all the spelling mistake english is not my primary language . Oh do you have a video talking about opening a brain new camera out a box and basic setting i think it would help a few guy and girls sometime .. My is done i think i spent two day setting it as i think was good .

I use a Canon 1200D at the moment and I always find that when my camera thinks the image is a perfect exposure (the exposure slider is on 0), its always too bright. This seems to be the case no matter what metering mode I'm using too. Is this my camera or is it just my personal preference that I always prefer the photos I get at around -1 exposure? At 0 I get highlights blown out and often washed-out colours it seems. Great videos by the way! :D

Tweaking Shutter speed we get blurry or freeze photo .. tweaking aperture we get focused subject and shallowed dof or great dof ..and increasing ISO we get brighter image with noise right ? .. Is iso just for maintaining correct exposure after setting shutter speed and aperture we want to keep or it has any roles like aperture and speed except for brightness?... you know what im saying .. just confused with ISO .. As far my knowledge ISO is last priority just to correct the exposure ... help me if im wrong ... thanks in advance hope you reply ...

      +Michele Gorman
1 - HI ISO (minimum 1600 ... 6400 and 12800 would not be unreasonable ... you paid big $$$ for this ability)
2 - LO Aperture (if you own a "cheaper" lens -> f/4 ... expensive ($$$$) "fast" telephotos may allow something even lower like f/2 ... fast means how low the aperture or f/stop goes)
3 - Try 'M'anual setting with your speed preset - start with 1/125th (and observe to see if the camera is telling you if there is enough light for proper exposure) - If 1/125th is too dim ... try increasing your ISO up. You don't want anything much slower than 1/125th for speed. It should allow for some sharpness with a sense of movement. If there's lots of light with your ISO, try a faster speed (1/250, 1/500) to freeze the action.
4 - If you can get all of the above to work, stick with the ISO, and switch to 'A'perture mode with the f-stop set to where you had it (e.g. f/4), and let the camera autoset the speed (assuming the speeds are somewhere around 1/125 - 1/500 ... 1/60 would be acceptable for any group photos with players standing around)

The fact that you took the time to respond to a month old comment, on a 5 year old vid, shows good dedication to helping people. I dont know how much you realize it, but little actions like these have far reaching impacts. I can only imagine how many inquiries you get at any given time. Thank you for being you. Also you have a badass sounding name, I guess I can understand how you might feel tired saying it all the time. But I wish once in a while youd make a vid where you start off with your name. Peace from Canada.

well this is different to your latest video where your doing "I AM SHOOT" thing, so here your saying pick your Anchor setting and build around that yet on the later video your saying set your ISO first then Aperture and then Shutter Speed...

It is different. Both are valid systems, and the I Am Shooting method is something I developed over time after teaching many workshops and making many videos.
Both systems are valid and workable, I Am Shooting is a simplification of this first method to make it consistent and repeatable, and both are meant to be learning methods to help people who struggle with shooting in Manual Mode.
