4WD Tracks From Licola To Howitt Hut - [ Cracking Storm Rolled In ]

  • Heading off with my mate, we take 4WD tracks from Licola To Howitt Hut, and travels down through the Macalister River.
Then up onto Howitt High Plains where a big storm rolled in at Howitt Hut.
Leaving Licola in basking sunshine in the mid 30's, and arriving at Howitt Hut a few days later to grey skies and heavy rain and thunder.
As the trip climbed out of the Macalister River along the well known 4x4 track for the area, Butcher Country Track.
The higher in elevation we travelled the weather began changing.
With visibility reduced due to low clouds, and then arriving at Howitt Hut, the weather became quite threatening. It wasn't long before the forecasted rains and storms unleashed.
Howitt Hut is a really nice high elevation location to camp. The hut contains a great deal of history from the Bryce family who built the hut to run cattle on the High Plains back in the late 1800's.
Then there's the two unsolved murders related to Wonnangatta Station that took place way back in 1918.
John Bamford's body was found in very close proximity to Howitt Hut.
The Vic High Country has so many amazing 4x4 tracks to drive with stunning views along the way.
The Macalister River crossings were low, which is pretty normal for this time of December.
Vic High Country 4x4 adventures, i just cant get enough of them.

I had been planning a 3 - 4 day trip just after New Years from Sydney, down the South Coast and into Vic North West High Country taking in McKillops Bridge and then heading west to Tom Groggin, staying as close to the Boarder as possible, then back up to Omeo, then down to Corryong, then across to Albury for a couple days with family.

Crikey, mate, you should have been into that thing, big time, with your fly rod and without a second wasted.

Did you have to replace the OEM clutch with a heavy duty one? I heard Patrol manual (pre 2012) clutches ate notorious for suddenly going. By the way apart from the steepness and the water crossings, most of the track is better than many roads up here in the Northern Rivers area where people have to drive their 2wd vehicles! What's more narrow winding roads, with horrendous pot holes often covered by water not giving you a clue that there is an abyss down there, vehicles coming on the wrong side of the road around a bend....I reckon we can handle any other road, anywhere....

    • @timbates4wdadventures
      @timbates4wdadventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      G'day mate,
A new clutch went in at about 300000ks. I just put a heavy duty clutch in with a solid mass fly wheel.
Im on my third clutch sine new back in 2009, with nearly 340000ks on the clock.
The roads down sound great up your way.
Cars on the wrong side of the road around blind corners, happens down here as well.
      Not great when it happens.

The Patrol handles so differently now with the weight out.
The suspension will need a tweaking at some stage. It's a bit harsh on some tracks.
Thanks heaps mate for your reply and feedback. I do appreciate it.
      Cheers Tim.

I wouldn't like to tackle Butcher Country track hill in the wet - wise move to do it dry. From the look of the bulldust it would have been nasty and dangerous next day. We went down Dingo Hill last week and out through Caledonia River track - that's a very easy drive compared to the last time we tried it - only got half a k from the link track and had to winch ourselves out of the bogholes and turn back, haha.

      G'day Ein,
Yeah thats why we came out.
Being way down on the Mac River and trying to drive Butcher Country in the wet, sure isn't a good idea.
I haven't been into Caledonia for a few years. The bog holes have been bad on the track for a few years now.
Good thing you got out ok.
      Thanks for your reply mate.
      Cheers Tim.

Good drive young felah, tracks look in good shape. Hopefully l be out that way soon, decisions to raptor coat the landy white, the existing dark blue is to hot in summer. It's always a problem with us 4wheelers we got to change something on our rigs.

When did you do that trip when the rain came through? I was over at Talbotville the Monday/Tuesday before Xmas and copped the same rain. Still awesome to be out in the area though.
    Cheers..

      Gday mate,
That trip was three weeks ago.
Heaps rain that night up on Howitt.
Always good being out in the high country no matter what the weather.
      Cheers Tim.

Hey Tim. Good trip there, mate.
Tell me, I noticed a lot of fallen timber as you approached Howitt High Plains turnoff (about 31:55 to 33:00 in the vid). Is that normal or is it old fire damage? I have never been up there so I was wondering the reason.

    • @timbates4wdadventures
      @timbates4wdadventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      G'day Garry,
Yeah mate, the grey timber is burnt snow gums from bush fires years ago.
It's the tall dead grey gums that you need to be really careful of during the windy days, they can fall very easily.
Thanks mate for your reply it is a great trip.
      Cheers Tim.

      It was a great trip.
You have a top trip, going to be a hot day tomorrow.
Plenty of river camp spots in that Dargo area.
Italian Flat, Talbotville to mention a couple.
Might see you in the area on the weekend.
      Cheers Tim.

We camped at the same campsite as you (about 15km from Licola), and saw your car there. Was just a tad warmer than last time i was up that way (middle of winter)

Love your videos Tim, and the “travel light” ethos shows you really don’t need to carry all that extra weight. I just completed a trip to Dargo and Snowy River NP over the new year break.
