The whole plan is to build 8 corridors by 2032 in the NCR region since it's set to see a huge population boom in the coming years.
Another reason to opt for RRTS was the absence of significant suburban railway in the region other than the metro (other cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad have a solid regional rail network).
Edit: a 17 km stretch is set to open by early 2023 (construction company says to complete it this year itself)

Here's a shot of Delhi Metro facts:
    1. First metro in India to use TBMs and box girder viaducts
    2. Best metro in India.
    3. It uses two gauges, broad and Standard Gauge as the government had a say in the Initial project before DMRC split into a private entity. So, one of the depots has both Standard and Broad Gauge facilities.
    4. The metro has probably the shortest metro in the world (besides the Waterloo & City Line perhaps), the grey line from Dwarka to Dhansa Bus Stand.
    5. The network is highly decentralised with lots of transfers outside the city center, serving a polynodal city very well.
    6. In addition to the Metro, Delhi also has a competent, but not the best, regional rail network.
    7. The metro's capacitty puts many european systems to shame, with heavy rail trains running every 3 minutes, lines can reach upto 72,000 ppdph.
    8. The pink line is the first part of a circle line, being finished in Phase - 4. It is the first metro circle line in India. Mainline circular railway does exist in Chennai.
    9. The earliest lines built to older standards still use ballasted tracks, rather than the standard ballastless tracks used almost everywhere else in India.
    10. Most of the system uses CBTC signalling system.

The trains were actually designed by Bombardier. Alstom lost the original tender before they bought Bombardier. Before the manufacturer was selected the NCRTC used an image of a regionalized Siemens Velaro for the trains.
But this is a very interesting project, I've following it for some years after I first heard about it after TH-cam algorithm. I love how it's integrated into Meerut's metro plans and will be part of larger network with 2 more routes in planning/pre construction and 5 more corridors to develop in the future. In Germany there's the München-Nürnberg Express, a regional loco-hauled train that has a top speed of 200kph, and these days uses custom Škoda-built double deck cars. The main reason it goes so fast is because part of its route uses a HSR line. We also used to have Interregios, which for all intents and purposes were medium-distance Intercity trains serving secondary rural routes, which you could use with regional train fares. Those also had rolling stock capable of 200kph, though the top speed was often limited by older locomotives. This certainly isn't an entirely new idea, but having it serve single metropolitan regions on dedicated tracks is a very neat concept.
The local Siemens Desiro HCs are probably also suited quite well to high speed regional rail. Their acceleration is rather ridiculous for a large partially double deck train (they accelerate better than most commuter and metro trains), and they can be ordered with a top speed of up to 200kph and as single units with up to four double deck cars (and two control/drive cars).
In my opinion the best-looking regional train prototype ever was the Transrapid 4 from the 80s, designed to go over 400kph in regional services in the Ruhr area. Sadly that project was killed with the successful introduction of the ICE network and a lack of infrastructure spending after reunification. Otherwise we'd have had a regional Transrapid by 2010.

I am originally from India but now live in Canada. Metro's, Railways and Transport is something I enjoy so much when going back to India. Wish we did less talking in Canada and more building. In the last 10 years, at least a dozen Indian cities have envisioned an idea, designed it, and finished building it. Lucknow Metro is an example. Meanwhile here is Calgary the green-line is still a mystery tbh. Here in Canada we do Paralysis by Analysis whenever it comes to any infrastructure project.

@@RMTransit I'm not so sure about that. Distance-wise, if you're getting more than 50-75 km outside of a city's core, I think you aren't really looking at regional rail anymore. To cover those speeds, you really don't need more the 160 km/h. Also, if you are stopping every 5 km like mentioned in this video, higher speeds also don't seem very sensible to me since you will barely reach them. Do take into account that power consumption rises exponentially with speed.

    • @anonomia5535
      @anonomia5535 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

That being said, I do think projects like this are very useful and should definitely be extented to other cities. I'm just not sure the top speed is really the game-changing factor here. Some countries tend to focus a lot on top speed, but honestly that is only a determining factor for long distances (over 200 km, I’d say). Factors like easy of use, frequency, comfort, and station locations are of greater importance.

@@anonomia5535 I agree. Japanese narrow gauge lines are often limited to 120~130km/h, but with proper skip stop services it can go fairly fast. Say, the Special Rapid Service in Osaka can run at 80km/h on average.
And the key is how you coordinate the express trains with the local ones, so that everyone alone the line can enjoy quality services. Same platform transfer is a good start, but you shouldn’t end there.
Regarding the trains, acceleration and deceleration are equally important. The infamous Series 103 commuter actually outperformed regional trains in a research carried out by Japan National Rail. And the train didn’t even have high acceleration - the grid network couldn’t support that. It just had a powerful brake. I think S-Bahn trains have a good balance on that sense, and a few Asian systems just imported the Siemens Desiro and call it a day.

What about shorter cross-lines to offset the terrible hub-and-spokes approach? If you want to get from Lincoln Park Zoo to the West Loop, better allow for a good chunk of the day. Would trams work? The speed of regional rail is usually not defined by operational top speed, but the average speed throughout the line restricted by service pattern and overall track quality. It is more impressive and useful when the track allows top speed up to 130kph while the average speed for an express service can be up to 90-100kph, then a track supporting 160kph and service achieving the same average speed.

Regional connections in Milan region got a maximum speed of 160 km/h. There are even many express services, named RegioExpress, to cut travel times.
Then, there is one case where the regional connection is true high speed, 300 km/h. The line (and the service) is designed for HS connection of North Eastern Italy, on Milan Venice line, but it calls at Brescia which is only 80 km far from Milan.
So it is normally used by commuters, as trains are frequent and relatively cheap (even if more expensive than a standard regional train). The trip from Brescia main station to Milan Central railways station is just 38 minutes.
If we add that you got a pretty good transit in both cities, as in Brescia there is a metro line, even if it just has 200k inhabitants, you can easily commute by just using transit.
A friend of mine used to commute every day (from Milan to Brescia, even if normally it's the opposite), get the metro to Milano Centrale, get the HS train to Brescia and then a couple of metro stops. From home to work about 50 min/ 1 h

Difference is the electrification (25KV AC vs 1500DC) and the train consist... while RRTS has same train design, different lengths / doors, NSCR instead keeps all trains as 8 cars but different manufacturers... the commuter / local service at 120kph from J-TREC with longitude seats, and limited / airport express service at 160kph (manufacturer TBA) with transverse seats. We should know by this month who won the tender (Kawasaki, Stadler Flirt, or CAF Civity).

Regional trains (always under contract of a state) are either red with white stripes or accents, or else a custom scheme demanded by the state. For both regional and long-distance and even freight, most locomotives are red.

RRTS looks an interesting project. Completed in 2011, the 'Gautrain' in Gauteng Province, South Africa is also a completely modern segregated 80km regional express network linking major cities Pretoria and Johannesburg, with a branch to a major airport. The system has a track gauge of 1435mm rather than the 1,067mm of the South African network and is electrified at 25kV. Initial rolling stock was supplied by Bombardier, based on their UK 'Electrostar' platform, used widely for longer distance commuter service in the south of England. The Gautrain version has an additional pointy nose bolted on.

They're replacing some older 200 km/h Regina EMUs with new Zefiro Express trains (vmax 250 km/h). The line already allows for 250 km/h top speed, this is just a service inprovement from Västtrafik.
I don't know if Stadler bid for the tender, but I would've prefered a variant of the SMILE low-floor high-speed train (see SBB-CFF-FFS Zürich - Milan line) than the contract that was awarded and what will be a standard long-distance (1250 mm ToR) floor height.

They also stop way less often than the S-Bahn and have a stop spacing of up to 20km
The Rhein-Ruhr-Express (RRX) is doing this quite well. Between Dortmund and Cologne there will be a 15-Minute headway, with 2 Siemens Desiro HC coupled together. Between Duisburg and Düsseldorf it will even have it's own tracks, enabling a 10 minute headway.

Can you do a vidoe taking abut the Brenner Base Tunnel will reach a length of 64 km. That would be the longest underground railway connection in the world depending on how you will measure it. It will contcet Innsbruck with Italy and Verona and shorten trip times to 2 hours and 30 minutes. When it will finally be finished in 2032.

I’ll definitely do it at some point, probably in a larger video on base tunnels

For Chinese cities, another reason for building express metros instead of improving the heavy rail is due to politics, metros are governed by the city government while rail is governed by the provincial government.

Yes! And another factor is they want to achieve economies of scale, so that they can export thier wares.

Another factor influencing European cities' rail networks structure is that they were essentially completely rebuilt by the U.S. following WW II under the Marshall Plan.

No they were not. And countries like say Spain or Eastern block through the 'iron curtain' had nothing to do with Marshall plan.
Anyway, just like in NA, after the war European cities mostly planned their cities for cars and dismantled tons of rails, streetcar networks over all.

As another commentator has pointed out, the Stockholm suburban trains have a top speed of 160 kph. I know from personal experience that they go very fast on outer sections to Uppsala and Balsta! Perhaps more importantly, the two city centre stations on the new tunnel section have platform doors.

As I remember, there are X40 trains running at 200kph as well?

Railway/Bus stations in India tend to become to the economic and focal point of the city. The folks who planned RRTS are hoping to become another focal point for the city.

Yup!! And don't forget the long distance private bus operators also start operating near these areas as well.
