Annual reminder that Notch decided to get into game development because Cave Story proved to him that the resources for average people to make games were finally available. Minecraft owes its existence to Cave Story, DIRECTLY.
@@Vyloka Semi-unrelated but Homestuck is like the non-video game version of this. So many modern animated cartoons (and also Undertale too), can trace inspiration back to it. Case in point, Adventure Time. We know for a fact that there were Homestuck fans amongst the writing team, there's this one image where you can see someone doodled one of the characters on the whiteboard in the writing room, and there are a couple nods to it within the earlier seasons that you can catch if you're familiar. Also, Steven Universe, Rebecca Sugar was probably the one responsible for that aforementioned doodle.
Plus, it's one of the few games that can claim to be genuinely made by a single person. Even in the case of Undertale, there was some collaboration for parts of the artwork - Cave Story's developer didn't only make all the art himself, but he even built his own game engine from scratch.
The Granddaddy, if not outright KING of Indie Games, Cave Story. While Daisuke Amaya, AKA Pixel, didn't completely make the game on his own (he had some testers to give him feedback, among others), his story of doing the graphics, the gameplay, the music, and everything else that made Cave Story what it is mostly on his own is an incredible tale, and it helped motivate other potential indie developers to make their own dream projects. The music is an especially interesting part of this story, since Pixel does not appear to have a history in musical composition and just made music that sounded good to him. Needless to say, I think many of us also found the music to be good as well!
Y'know, Touhou is somewhat the queen of indie games, technically. But yeah, Cave Story is so storied (No pun intended) for a good reason! Shame that Nicalis seems to milk Cave Story behind Pixel's back, though.
I remember playing this shortly after the first English version became available. Had trouble getting it to run at first, so i just emailed Pixel to ask for help. He replied and I'll never forget what he said to me: "I'm sorry i don't speak English" 🥲

I'm surprised all the comments are about Pure Furies lol. But yeah, it's a fantastic track and my personal favorite Touhou theme. Part of the reason why is how visceral it is. At a point, the Zunpets kick into full gear, and it makes the track sound almost anguished. Would love it if Jonny got to do that with a guitar wail. Also, Touhou's return to GaMetal is long overdue

There's a rumor about this song that I haven't been able to confirm, but I heard that the song subtlely becomes desynced every few loops so that it sounds really weird after a longlong time.
I've never caught that in game, but it sounds believable cuz I did notice that downloading the songs from the freeware version and trying to pinpoint an exact tempo to them doesn't work because at some point they get slightly desynced from said bpm no matter what, even without looping. I think it might have something to do with the fact that the audio engine and the daw/synthesizer made to make the songs is all coded by Pixel himself, so the play speed might not be 1:1 perfect

CAVE STORY HELL YEAH! I remember playing it sometime before it exploded in popularity, the game had a few fansites, a few AU ideas, quite a few remix albums (including a winter themed one iirc) and I recall reading somewhere that the person who made it was intrested in making a sequel at some point (but we still haven't found out if anything's come from that) My favorite weapon in the whole game is the Bubbler! Becuase bubbles! 😄 (also becuase a good defense is a good offense)

Ah yes Cave Story, you know, i finished with the neutral ending not too long ago for the first time in my life, not gonna lie it feels like a really nostalgic journey, thank you guys for this.
Could have sworn this theme was also called “Plantation”, though maybe dans just called it that because the main theme also played in the Plantation area. Interesting place to play the main theme of the game, if I’m being honest.
"plantation" all lowercase is the original Japanese name iirc (at least according to the Cave Story+ VGMdb page)
