    Here is the official deal with Ace trucks to set the record straight for anyone reading these comments. Size 44's are 8.38" wide like he says in the video, but the height is NOT 55mm. They're only 52mm tall. Ace lists this officially on their website. I thought they were 53mm tall since the beginning, so I wonder if the latest run brought them down 1mm to change things up. The stock bushings on their latest batch are excellent quality, however, they are very very hard and coming from someone who is 210lbs, I still couldn't get them to turn how they're meant to turn. It makes no sense to me how they would put such restricting bushings stock when they're supposed to be the fastest and deepest turning trucks out there. Perhaps to not scare away folks like the gentlemen in the video from riding them consistently and getting used to them? These ones in the video are the old design and had the more soft stock bushings so they turned a lot more when ridden stock.
    Anyways, I've found your best bet with Ace's is to just leave the stock bottom bushing and washer alone, but swap the stock top bushing for something shorter. I think that's really what prevents them from functioning properly when ridden stock, the top bushing is tall and a very hard durometer. The hard stock bottom bushing will prevent wheelbite and maintain stock geometry, but a shorter top bushing like an Indy aftermarket, or a Bones bushing will allow it to TURN.
    Now that they've reinforced the hanger with more metal underneath and eliminated the curved "rocker", they are just as durable as a standard ol' Indy. The casting and quality of aluminum surpasses Indy's, regardless of the fact they're made in China. The metal was a lot "softer" on their older trucks, but these newer ones, while still "softer" than Indy, are a bit "harder" than their previous version so they grind extremely fast and like butter. They are excellent trucks. Period. Again, keep in mind I'm referring to the latest batch of redesigns. Their older ones had a lot of QC issues, but now they seem to finally have their shit together.
    Anyways, glad to see someone professional and articulate reviewing Ace's. They have a lot of people curious and I see more and more Indy lifers, or whatever truck company the person was loyal to, switching to Ace and never going back. Once you get them dialed in and are used to them, they ruin your ability to skate any other truck, but it's a good thing. Ace for life.

      Leave it to an Ace rider to give such a well written response. Thank you. I look forward to trying a newer pair but it is probably good that I tried an older pair as well so I am aware of the past issues. Thanks again for the great comment. I learn so much from posts like these.

      It's surprising that no one really has these listed correctly (except Ace now), but to be fair the axles hang out past the nuts more than most trucks, so they skate probably most like a 8.25".

    • @bendegros
      @bendegros  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree. There was a lot of axle thread sticking out. Adding washers could definitely make it comfy on an 8.38.

    • @AnonYmous-qv9kw
      @AnonYmous-qv9kw 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Thanks for the kind words. Unless you need a truck that's super "lite" like one with a forged baseplate and titanium axles and all that stuff, I think Ace are just as versatile for any type of skating just like Indy is considered to be. But most people seem to think otherwise. They have this idea in their head that Ace is this different breed of truck that only allows you to be a curb crusher or pool heshlord. They really just perform like any other truck out there, but they do it better. The aluminum alloy allows longer and smoother grinds, and the geometry allows a faster and deeper turn. With the right dialed-in bushings and pivot cups of your choice, they will feel like a truck is supposed to feel. Not dangerously loose, unless you wanna ride 'em that way. But just...natural.

      Anon Ymous. I have a question for you ? A guy told me to use Bones bushing. He said take the stock smaller top washer and put it upside down on the bottom so the geometry stays the same. then use the bones bushing for the top. Please let me know your thoughts. I am super excited about these new trucks, Its raining right now so i can't ride in the parks yet, : (

    So actualy ace sponsors mostly pool skaters and growing up in Portland I've skated a lot of transition and that's what ace is meant for.. The curve they have is so that they will lock in better and right away, fresh out of the box! Also we like loose trucks and that's kinda what's up with the base and your wobbled!!

    I skated Ace lows a couple of years ago, and when I switched to Avenues the only thing I really missed was the turning ability of the Ace truck. I ride my trucks loose. Now skating Thunders, and it sort of resembles what I remember from the Ace truck turning ability, but I could be remembering wrong. I skated my Ace with Bones medium bushings without any issue, and I remember that because that was the main reason that I went with Ace instead of low indys, that the low Ace truck was compatible with Bones bushings. I dont know about the high variant though. I skated my Ace trucks for under a year, and unfortunately bent both my trucks and had to send them back. Nice review and awesome skating!

    • @bendegros
      @bendegros  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I feel like they have a very similar response in turning to thunders but they go farther because of height and wheelbase. They are similarily quick turning but go deeper.

    I bought a set of 44's from zumiez. The top bushings were getting cut up by the washer whenever I'd turn.. Popping out of the washer as well.. Ace replaced the bushings, the new ones did the same until I got them just right.. When I prevented the bushing damage, the trucks felt to tight lmao.. I am riding the 44's with stock indy bushings now

    I had two pairs of ace`s 55 (skinnier first generation and the meatier 2nd generation) but I switched back to indys because of reliability. Both pairs ended up in axle bent, and had to replace pivot cups very often. I loved the geometry and preferred it over indys without a doubt. Your reviews are very good and I´ve learnt a lot, I appreciate the work. By the way I think the height of ace trucks are 53mm not 55mm.

    • @julessiler8259
      @julessiler8259 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, I bent some aces when i was 13 learning 50-50s. That was 5 years ago. They grind down quick and lose their "strength" after a while. I still can't lock in 50-50s straight because they bent. But crooks and smiths are easier for me. 😂

    I got 03 and I couldn’t use them on my 14.25 wb. So I got a 14.5 AWS think that’s gonna put me in a more comfortable position. I’m really trying to get use to them because I really think the carving attributes really help enhance the skaters style. They just look so relaxed like our upper bodies. I feel like they may want to just take off to one side or anything tho if you’re not completely on center.

    This review is ENTIRELY consistent with my own experience with Ace's, and that of friends'. Too squirrely unless you like turboloose trucks, soft metal, etc. Also I have seen/read numerous problems with that pivot bushing issue you mention.

    • @bendegros
      @bendegros  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @chriss.1593
      @chriss.1593 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I go back and forth between Indy forged hollows and Thunder Team hollows. I lean towards Indys because of that baseplate/wheel issue mentioned before...but Thunders feel so good for locking-in on transition lip tricks...but I'm preaching to the choir on that one! In any event, happy holidays, Ben!

  • @timknapen
    @timknapen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    This sounds like a very honest review. I ride aces with bones in them. I truly love how they turn in transition and find them more stable than indies without losing on turn. They saved my life many times in tight turns. :-)
    The original pivot cups are weirdly loose, I changed those out. That might be the reason for your squirrely experience?

    • @bendegros
      @bendegros  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @timknapen
      @timknapen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bobby Parson the bushings? Just plainly swapped them. Left the spacers in. But I see plenty of guys skating them without any washers. A lot of people seem to like them wobbly loose!

    • @timknapen
      @timknapen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bobby Parson ah sorry you are obviously talking about the pivot cups! I had Thunder replacement pivotcups lying around. Just popped the original ones out with a knife. I only did change those out on my old set of 33s. I have a pair of newer (special .38) 44s and they have much better pivot cups. I didn't need to replace those. Also the metal seems harder, so they grind very different than the old 33s!

    If you like indys but want a slightly looser “surfy” feel definitely try ace trucks. For me indys super soft bushings are the best no matter which trucks I have, but you could definitely use their soft bushings or half soft half super soft if you don’t like your trucks dumb loose. Also if you ride 8.5 or up I’d recommend getting 55’s which are 9.0 in width. Riding an 8.5, 8.625, or 8.75 with 9.0 trucks is a dream🤩 “loose trucks save lives” happy carving!

    I love my Ace trucks. It's weird but they're the first set of trucks that I could leave loose and feel completely comfortable on. My only complaint is the weight. They seem really heavy to me. I still ride them on my main setup though.

    • @guyfromthatthing1017
      @guyfromthatthing1017 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To some people they’re not. But yes to me they are. Esp in today’s market. To BD and others, 360 grams is light. To me, I only really consider trucks at that weight and below. Aces are at my max weight; One of the biggest differences is fatigue- after hours when you’re low on juice, and trying to land a trick, that’s when the weight becomes a factor-I just feel it takes more and more out of the tank with each try, and instead of getting closer to landing you regress at the end of your sesh

      @@guyfromthatthing1017it's crazy you said that because I felt a battle with my switch flips. I love ace trucks. It was my first sesh with them. No that’s cool. I love aces. I’ve been riding them for a year now. I’ve rode 33, 44, and 55’s all on a variety of shapes and I enjoy them. The reason why is because I skate pools in Michigan, and I like the way they grind on outdoor pool coping similarly to a Indy, but again I agree with they are softer.

    I might give aces another try . I skated a pair around 2013-14 when they still were still out of the diamond and had the diamond logo on the base . They’re some of the best trucks that I’ve tried the best turn radius and the soft alloy had the butteriest grind .however my axel started to slip making them unskatable unfortunately. I heard they fixed a lot of their manufacturing problems now but I ended up skating Independents stage XI but now I might just give them another go when these Indy’s are dead .

      Same here, I had CX trucks on a 9.75 old school board and man that set up can carve up any transition. The drop in on those trucks are just to hairy so I'm riding Ace classic 66 and I'm impressed. They will never turn like a CX but for a standard truck I feel like I made the right choice. And yes now I can drop in 👍 Ace are great for the type of skating I do.

    Bones mediums with both washers work really well in these actually, I prefer it over the krux bushings. Also I'm pretty sure the height of these trucks isn't 55mm. Tactics says 53mm, and their website says 52mm. I have both the 44s and 55s and neither of them feel like they're 55mm high. Definitely grind down a little quicker than Thunders.

    1:17 with regards to the shape of the truck, some might argue that this type of bend is more beneficial. I recently watched this video about “pinching” your grinds th-cam.com/video/9CRCaFvaaeU/w-d-xo.html and this shape potentially could help send into any of those 4 pinch spots

      This is a pretty good point. Whether that slight curve is enough to cause a noticeable difference is to hard to tell, but the reasoning makes sense!

    I’m currently riding the newer size 55s. With the stock bushings, I was not able t get them adjusted to my liking. They felt way too loose for me. I put Bones bushings in and have outstanding turns and response with stability.
    I think the metal is softer than, say, an Indy. Not the end of the world, but something I noticed, though I could be wrong.
    Prior to the 55s I’m skating, I was riding indys for many years. I still think indy has a great truck, but I’d gladly buy another set of Ace 55s when mine are toast.

      handywithshovels they are meant to be skated extremely loose thats how people used to skate in the 80s which is what this truck is based on the old indys

    This is the content i love Ben. Great review. Vinne Bahn had told me once they were best in bowls and vert, He rides them very tight with great success which seems counterproductive to there design. I would say these are not a truck for beginners.

    That is an awesome review Ben! I think that Ace trucks are made in China. The same with Krux and Theeve. I have a pair of Theeve and they have the same soft metal feel as Ace. Not sure if you noticed, but the ride sounds more muffled sound as if you went from 100 hard wheels down to 97s or something less. I put my indies back on with the same wheels, bone bushings, and bearings and it was louder/harder sounding. I prefer the loudness of Indy and Thunder. Thanks for your review on these trucks and great skating in this video.

    Since there is a t like shape of the hanger , they tend to bend relatively easy even if you don't skate a lot of drops , there the same metal compound as the force trucks back in the day . It's all under the diamond umbrella. Also aces are based off of the stage 3 indys

I also can't see most of the photobucket photo's. It's kind of annoying. I would actually love to sort all that out and be a Slap Pal. I would like to post photo's of new set ups and nerd out about stuff.

    @Ben Degros: You should try the Ace lows with their hard bushings. Nice poppy surfy feel, not much wheelbite AND good for tech tricks. Wheelbase has to be 14.2 up because of their shrinking geometry. Primitive Teammanager Trent mcclung and Jordan Trahan rides them also like that.

    I was doing the carvey hipster thing and then I got a massive wheel bite and ate shit. BIG TIME! The bushings are way, WAAAAY.... too soft. I did have some Krux bushings laying around & put those on. It seems to work alright for now. The bushings that came with my Purple 55' Ace Trucks are really squishy, so squishy that when I got my wheel bite, the bushing came out of its bushing washer on the underside. You can actually bend the bushings back & forth with just your fingers.

    There are still Tracker Dart trucks on Ebay...the old ones...They also have some longboard ones that are new I think.. But those were an awesome truck in like 1996...they came out with the Tracker Dart 2 or 3 or something....can't remember...and their biggest claim was they were supposed to have the tightest turning radius of any standard design truck in the industry.

    Just put aces on a 10" cruiser/curb slapper set up with 56 mm gslides. They are fun as hell and light. Only downside is even with 3 1/8 risers under each truck i still get wheel bite a little and bushings come out of the cup often. Would not try to come down fakie on a transition with these bad boys either thats just me tho.
