Thank you for the kind words. The highest note is a "C" 4 spaces above the bass clef staff. I would recommend practicing exercises that can incorporate intervallic leaps until you get to the high C. In fact, try practicing this by playing these pitches: 1ST LINE ABOVE BASS CLEF C to E, C to G (above it), C to High C. Do that exercise until you have the strength and air speed to make the high C come out consistently. Be patient and GOOD LUCK!
Thank you! The main advice I can give about the 3rd movement is to memorize the melodic line to help with the counting between the 3/4 and 4/4 measures.
I practice playing whole notes (like in a scale) and as I ascend, I increase or decrease the speed of my vibrrato to help with my control. I'm glad you enjoyed the performance. Thank you!
@@elelsey Ok, cool. I am a disabled vet (PTSD) and in recovery for alcohol and drug abuse. Playing music (primarily euphonium) has been a major help in my recovery. Anyways…Eastman heard about my story and is gifting me an EEP526s (next week at my community band rehearsal). Hence my curiosity of the specific make/model. I guess I’ll be like an amateur brand artist. :) (I’m super excited and humbled.)
I just saw your video for the first time tonight. DUDE! That was SWEET! It brought back memories. I performed the piece on my Senior recital, in college. (April of 1989) You made some different musical choices than I did, but it was ... an honor to hear your performance. (BTW, you posted this video about the time I was retiring from the US Army, as a euphonium player.)
Kevin Robertson It is an Eastman and I'm playing on a Giddings and Webster Boreas mouthpiece (they don't design it like this anymore but it is equivalent to a 5G). I don't perform as much as I used to so it makes me happy to see that my old videos are still enjoyable, helpful, etc.
I understand about not playing as much as you used to (long story). Eastman? I'm not familiar with that make of horn. I've been playing on a Willson 2900 since 1986. ... So, you are a "Giddings and Webster" fan, as well. ... I use a "Kadya" (variation on the Schilke 52 D) on my Willson, and have found the "E-1" mouthpiece (I think that is the successor to the "Boreas") to work better with the Besson horns.
This was such an astonishnig performance! I have emulated your sound when it comes to this solo. I have district Solo&Ensemble in February and I feel prepared already! I still have trouble at "J" in the first movement. That high G-low A-high G gap gets me every time. But beautiful performance and thank you for helping me!
im a junior in high school and this is my solo this year for solo and ensemble this is very helpful for me , i have to memorize it if i want to make STATE
Tony Martinez Glad that I can help you! Good luck with the memorization. The times that I did play this from memory, it was because I really enjoyed every aspect of the piece inside and outside of my solo part. The ride is so fun when you know the piece inside and out.
Eddie, thank you for this incredible performance. This was the piece I was working on when I received news of a life-changing event, and this event brought out a new meaning in this composition. Your rendition of the Adagio in the middle of movement 1 nearly brought me to tears. Again, thank you for making such sublime music.
Thank you so much and good luck at Solo and Ensemble! Just try to isolate and figure out how much air it takes for each note and remember how it feels when you play those pitches. Also, make sure you practice it slow and then speed up the tempo once you've got it under your fingers.
It is an Eastman Compensating Euph and it plays very well for me! The main tip I can give is to take a performance/recording of this that you like and emulate it as much as possible with regards to phrasing, dynamics, tempi, etc. Good luck!!!
I came across the first movement of this piece after listening to a collection of Euphonium solos and finding this recording was a blessing you sound like an angel and I'll definitely play this as my next piece because it sounds like an absolute blast :O
Eddie Elsey Did this solo last year and got into college with it and I gotta say, I sound nothing close to you and I really like your tone and playing style!! Keep up the good work!
Well done! I am a highbrass player. I play Trumpet & French horn/Mello. :) and wow low brass instruments sound beautiful if you play them good! amd you sure showed them!
Buddy what... I'm a good euphonium player for an 8th grader as well, especially considering the time ive been playing my instrument, but I would struggle to play it. I might be misunderstanding what you said, but god damn how good are you-
This is beautiful! Better than many other recordings of tuba! I have to audition with the first movement in a few weeks (CC tuba) and this, like many, helps tremendously!
Sort of a personal question, what state are you living in? I'm in High School (Junior) using this piece as a chance to make state (If I memorize the music either MVMNT 1&2 or MVMNT 2&3) and possibly my College audition. Your video is the one I keep coming back to. To make edits in the music. Thank you so much for this video! 😍😍😍
Hello! I am a Euphonium player in the 10th grade. I will be preforming this piece for Solo and Ensemble. I was wondering how you get this beautiful Vibrato from your instrument. Are there any exercises I can do to help with my Vibrato?
Yes. The Vining is a great book for fundamental work! I also play the F scale in whole notes to work up my vibrato. As I ascend note to note, I increase the speed and frequency of my vibrato and vice versa when I descend. I always say ta-ya-ya-ya when executing vibrato. Thanks for the kind words!
Freaking amazing man, I'm doing this piece for solo contest but I only have time for two moments and I can't decide which ones to do. What would you recommend?
Thank you! I would recommend 2 and 3. Start slow and end with something fun. The 3rd movement is one of my favorite works of music to do AND to listen to. Good luck!!!

I may be 10 years late, and who knows where you are now sir, but I’m in highschool learning this piece and I appreciate your advice

euphoniums are the best!
Yes they are!

Do you still play on an Eastman horn? (EEP526?)
@iMav_ I still have it. I don't perform as much as I used to but, yes, I still play on an Eastman.

Given what I heard, I hope you are still playing. (It's one of my favorites, too.)
Just curious. Is that a Yamaha horn you are playing on? and what is the mouthpiece you used? ... Don't recognize that either.

Mr. Elsey, how is the EEP526s? Could you make a video review? I'm deeply curious as are many of us in the euphonium world.
I just posted a video response. Could you take a look at it and tell me what I can work on? It's the first movement of this piece.
Very nice! Could you tell me a bit about the range required for the piece? The first movement in particular you made sound so easy
