    Technical Description:
The camshaft sensor is a magnetic sensor used to measure the camshafts speed and the position of each piston. The car uses this data along with the crankshaft position sensor to control fuel injection timing and spark timing, and overall engine timing. The camshaft is also used to help with ignition and fuel injection starting and running the engine. This information is essential for the engine as it is used for engine timing.
If a camshaft position sensor is damaged it is a very serious issue and should be fixed replaced immediately. If it is not replaced it could lead to your car not being able to start.
In most cases, a new camshaft position sensor replacement will restore normal engine performance. This will allow for your engine to ignite its air/fuel mixture at the right time and improve engine performance and reliability.
What are the symptoms of a faulty cam sensor?
    Poor Drivability
A failing camshaft position sensor begins losing its ability to quickly transfer data. Mismatched fuel delivery and ignition timing, even if off by a few milliseconds, will cause your vehicle to sputter, accelerate poorly, lack power, stall or even shut off.
Where is a camshaft position sensor located?
    cylinder head
The Camshaft Position sensor is typically located in the cylinder head of the engine and has a cylindrical portion that inserts into the head. The Crankshaft Position sensor is normally located in the timing cover or on the side of the block with a cylindrical portion that inserts into the block.
Can a cam sensor be repaired?
After time, the camshaft sensor can weaken due to wear and tear. When it fails, the weak or disrupted signal is interpreted as a problem by the computer. This will affect the smoothness of the vehicle's engine, and should be repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
What happens when camshaft sensor is faulty?
Car Will Not Start: Over time, as the camshaft position sensor fails, the signal it sends to the engine control module weakens. When the engine no longer receives the signal, you will not be able to start your car. Engine Misfires: A failing camsh
Can you drive without camshaft sensor?
The short answer is yes, it is safe to drive with a bad camshaft sensor, but it's not good for your engine long-term. You'll likely see a higher fuel consumption and poorer engine performance the longer you wait to get it fixed.
What is the function of camshaft sensor?
The camshaft sensor enables the engine control to determine the exact position of the crankshaft drive. This information is required to calculate the ignition point and injection point, among other things.
    Can low oil damage camshaft?
If the oil level is very low, to the point where the engine overheats however, yes. Excessive heat can cause a camshaft position sensor to fail. More likely in a "low oil level" situation is for the camshaft, lifters, or camshaft variable timing actuator to fail due to inadequate oil pressure and lubrication.
    Are there 2 camshaft sensors?
A camshaft sensor determines the exact position of your engine's camshaft, helping your car keep your engine's combustion running smoothly. Many modern engines have one camshaft sensor for each camshaft. This can mean up to four, although some cars will only have two.
How long does a camshaft sensor last?
The camshaft position sensor on a car is built to last as long as the car does, but in most cases it will have to be replaced well before that. Just like any other sensor or switch on a car, the camshaft position sensor will take a lot of abuse due to the heat that the engine produces.
    Why do camshaft sensors fail?
There are a number of reasons your camshaft sensor might break down: grime and oil in the engine, water damage, bad wiring, and overheating can all cause a camshaft sensor to go bad. The biggest thing to do to avoid this is to take care of your car.
Why is there oil in my camshaft position sensor?
It's a normal thing for a camshaft position sensor to have oil on it. The oil is necessary for its functionality. However, the sensor housing has to be in good shape to work perfectly. A crack in the sensor housing can result in oil contamination which could make the sensor fail.
