For people who don't want to sit through 12 minutes of senseless content: Switch cartridges are expensive and taste bitter if you put them in your mouth.
IDFBI agent [Lucky] Some bitter chemical. I’m pretty sure it’s the same stuff parents can put on their kids nails to stop them biting them. Safe to “consume” but tastes vile.
So, I clicked on the video for a sad truth, didn't find not a single one just rambling about how cartridges cost more than CD's to manufacture something almost everyone knows.
@@Confruggy yeah agreed, physical media ends up being cheaper for the consumer because it can be reused many times given off to many people. When old games aren't on sale digitally they usually cost retail. Only thing that sucks about digital I go digital on PS4 but physical in switch.
The reason for that is game devs can lower prices and still get more money by raising the digital cost to match, second Nintendo probably charge them a little extra for the services they do on digital.
@@TheMagnay OK so that doesn't justify the consumer paying the same price or more for digital. We should pay less since we aren't paying for a cartridge that has to be manufactured, packaged, and shipped. Just my opinion.
@@missgrinch5940 actually it does, game devs are pumping more and more money into developing games but customers are not willing to pay any more for the game. So game devs need to make their money elsewhere and then everyone complains about that too. There is no winning for devs. Obviously there is going too far but i don't think matching in-store and online is at all.
I think either way (and I felt the same years before this video was made), if you buy digital you are a sucker. Games, movies, and anything else available in a physical copy, simply because possession is 9/10th's of the law. I have the game in my hand, prove I can't play it, vs. I got hacked and lost my games/device failed and I lost my games/developer pulled game, can't download it again/my internet has a data limit, so it will take half my data allowance every month to download my games (meaning I paid more for the game because my data costs roughly $2/GB)/etc, I could do this all day. Certainly there is some minor shortcoming with physical, but nothing the gaming community couldn't cope with for DECADES before digital was around....
I hope you're joking. There aren't any downloads of that size on the switch. I don't even think the system could handle that large of a game. The most I've ever had to wait was 2 hours for Skyrim. It was 13 GB and that's with my slow ass internet. I stopped buying physical games because 2 of my cartridges just quit working...the switch kept saying that it couldn't recognize the game card. Digital is the way of the future so you might as well get used to it. Enjoy your carts while they last.

From a practical standpoint, no handheld system can work with a disc. With that said, the time will come - likely sooner than any of us think - that an optical drive and discs will be small enough for a handheld console. The one absolute must for anyone buying a Switch is to get a good quality carrying case with the little pouches for the cartridges and - like the medicine bottles, household cleaners, etc. say - KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN!
@@bubbasouth69 Optical drives are dead. This video pointed out a key factor, Discs only replaced cartridges because they could hold more data than cartridges. That is no longer the case. We've come full circle and cartridges, or essentially SD cards, have much higher capacities than Blu-Ray. Plus optical drives can fail, the discs can be scratched which corrupts data, a sharp jerk can cause them to skip and cause issues. Where solid state media has absolutely none of those downfalls. We will never see an optical rive for a handheld console, and honestly in 2020 we shouldn't be seeing optical drives coming to the PS5 or next Xbox either. But, unfortunately we probably will.
They also hold their value especially Pokemon Games. I buy physical just because of resale in case I don't like the game I bought. I only buy digital if the game is super cheap & it's a game I don't mind losing in the future.
@@b4rs629 Dude Pokémon games hold their value so well it's insane. Pokémon Emerald costs more on the used market than a brand spanking new, fully fledged, AAA effort from Nintendo.

Physical is always my preference over digital download, once I'm done with a game, I can lend it to another family member. I hate that you can't do that with digital downloads. Also retailers drop the cost for physical games quite often which means that, depending on the title, the cost of bulk buying them is considerably low for them.
@@alzearafat People have been saying that since the PS4 and Xbox One released and 9 years later physical is still going. Gran Turismo 7 has dropped by £15 in the UK on Amazon after just 2 weeks due to the backlash. I'll take that over paying disgusting £70 price tags for a piece of digital media thanks.
Physical also able to resale legally, which in the long run, is much cheaper than jailbreak ehem*pirate*ehem... You can buy a used game at 30 dollar, sell it back at 20 dollar, so you just "rent" the game at 10 dollar

@@jacobwhiteley7217 unfortunately it has happened before. Take Fable 3 on pc for example. I have bought it, but now I cant re download it on new systems because it isnt on Microsoft's store.
Stadia, itself, as a console (controller) has a huge problem, controllers eventually need to be replaced every 5-7 years, a console itself should last 15 years. So, say it gets drift, or a button falls off, or breaks, or other controller errors, it’s not just a controller that’s damaged, it’s THE CONSLE ITSELF.
I understand having the game cost more if it’s on cartridge but when it’s digital it seems odd that it still costs as much as the physical If anything I feel it should cost less since no cartridge is made for it.
This is with every game tho not just switch I think it’s for Convenience considering like you have a kid and don’t want to go out and buy a game you can buy it at home just like if you have food delivered it cost more I feel like it’s the same thing
Back when cd's was the new game media, they told us it would allow them to sell video games cheaper than cartridges. Prices were practically the same as before, excluding some special cases and N64 games. Then when digital distribution was the new thing they told us this will let them sell games cheaper than cd games. Nope, still being sold for the same price.
@@DomenBremecXCVI In addition to convenience, hosting the game and the bandwidth usage for you to download also costs them money. It's probably equivalent to manufacturing and shipping of the physical devices or the difference is negligible.
Whether it' true or not, apparently the story is it's to maintain retailer relationships. Stores felt threatened by digital sales and to continue stocking games, they agreed to keep the prices on par for both physical and digital. Can't sell your digital games if no one can buy your console anywhere and mail order systems don't exactly sell huge numbers.
There’s one other major consideration. Buy the physical copy of a popular game (Zelda and Pokemon especially) and then care for it. 10 years later, that game still sells for what you bought it for - if not more. So yes, ore expensive to buy, but also represent a better investment.
Yea you can basically see this in the pricing of the games when buying them new. Games like botw and smash bros still go for their original prices but many others went down a bit
Regardless of what they sell for you can still resell them and make money back or lend them out. Can't do that with digital for the most part but you know, people are happy paying $70 for digital media that still cost more on sale than physical for reasons that I'll never understand.
Totally agree... In our family, when we buy cartridges we put the box in a safe place, just in case we want (or need) to resale them, and we taught our now 7 and 11 years old kids to take care of the cartridges, just for the same reason.
I like physical copy aswell but due to the switch being portable its just long to take all your games with u and although u get most physical copies cheaper, u get gold points on switch which u can use for discounts. There is also the voucher option (only if u have switch online) which lets u get 2 games from a list of big hits for £84 (save up to £40)
The real infuriating thing is that digital versions of games cost as much as physical copies; despite not having anything to manufacture. Digital versions should cost 5 to 10 bucks less.
And physical versions drop in price. Very rarely do digital versions ever drop permanently in price and they usually cost far more on sale than a physical copy.
And digital won't allow you to sell the game in case you want/need. Meaning you lose money when buying digital. I only buy digital if the game doesn't exist in physical and I really want the game or if the game is dirty cheap and I wouldn't be missing just for not buying it, like 90% or more discount.
“Dragon Quest IX” came out on the Nintendo DS, so that statement about Square not publishing a tent pole series on a Nintendo console is untrue and not well-researched.
I've been hearing this a lot but they don't consider the DS & 3DS consoles since they were strictly hand held only. They were gaming systems! I don't care if the can fit in my pocket or not, they play games. They are somehow considered console if they hook up to the TV

Just one correction. It wasn't on the DS. It was on the 3DS. The DSi was already dead by the time the game came out. It was literally for the 3DS, with the extra mode that the Switch version has. Or maybe it was something else. I just remember seeing 2D in the promotional videos for the 3DS version, if only because I follow the Japanese Square Enix youtube account, to see what is coming out. SQueenix and Nintendo retsrated to partner up in the eatly 2000s the rift between Square and Nintendo only lastes 6 years, not 22 years like this video implies.
Save time, the "sad truth" is like saying "SSD cost more to make than HDD", cartridges is more expensive to make than a blu-ray disk. A regular SD card cost US$9, a blu-ray disk is 10x for US$19 (1.90$/ea.). Okay, that add 10$ to cost of physical copy, but we are all aware of all the advantage this format has. On a side note, does not explain why it's still same price on eShop.
Eshop is the same price as all the other parts of making a game - paying programmers, writers, graphic artists, translations, advertising, etc., does not change because it was sent a different way. Worst case, eshop sales get them $10 closer to breaking even each sale.
eShop sells games for the same price as the physical cartridges so they don't cannibalize the retail market. If you could buy games cheaper on eShop than at Target, Target would simply refuse to carry the games.
The game is the product, not the media on which it is delivered. Why is an ebook same (or more) than you can buy the paperback? Why is a Digital album from iTunes the same price as buying a CD? The physical medium itself is a tiny proportion of the actual cost of producing any of these things. However the customer prefers to receive it they are making a judgement based purely on content, or physicality vs convenience. And that is completely ignoring the fact that having the monopoly on digital distribution for a specific platform gives any hardware developer a distinct advantage. That Nintendo does not use this advantage to price out traditional high street retailers benefits everyone.

Got it. Funny joke.
LOL every damn gaming company is a scammer, well at least 95% of them are scammers and nintendo included. If they were honest we would not see older games selling for the price of new ones under the excuse of "remastered" BS, or the scam from nintendo were you have to pay a sub fee to play online that have a shitty services or the day 1 edition bullshit or season pass scam or pre-order bullshit where gaming companies try to make you buy their games before you find out how shitty those games are, or scammy micro-transactions in fully priced games or games "deluxe" BS edition that sells for way more than what the game should cost. I bought a brand new Switch for my 8 years old kiddo and the crapcons on it started drifting 5 days after we opened it, craptendo tried making me pay $$$ to have it fixed or replaced, they wanted $$$ to fix a broken controllers, luckily my friend talked to then again and he is a lawyer, and the shitty customer support again tried scamming us by asking for $$$ to have it fixed or replaced, that was under my friend mentioned taking this problem to the court, thats when we got a free crapcons to replace the broken one. I had a similar problem with Sony, my account got banned for a stupid reason that is a problem I had with my credit card that I used on my playstation 4, I tried to explain to them that the problem was a mistake from the credit card company side and I even had a written proof that it was an honest mistake from the bank/credit card company but noooooooope I was banned and all my games went bye bye and was told to deal with it, so I did :D my friend who is a lawyer forced Sony to refund me every penny I spent on the banned playstation account. If those situations are not considered to be a try to scam me to pay $$$ to buy things I already bought and owned then I don't know what scam is.

Another factor is the Switch's hybrid nature. With a cartridge you're less likely to encounter read errors due to the console being bumped vs optical media. Especially when factoring in Switch games that use gyro controls in handheld mode.
In modern consoles most games install off the disk and only use the disk to verify you own the game after installation. You can literally take the disc out of an Xbox while its running an installed game and it runs fine.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. The thing is, I couldn’t agree more about the importance of cartridges for gamer freedom and long-term investment. I will always argue for and shell out the money for physical games. One of the reasons that I’m sad about the death of the 3DS/2DS family is because the cartridge library is amazing. Our local mom and pop game store has recently closed down, but I used to love the experience of going to the store and buying the new game, the anticipation of the ride home, the unboxing, etc. I recently pulled out my old, original XBOX Green Halo Edition and my entire game library from the garage. It fired up perfectly and I was playing an almost 20 year old system and games that I loved and the memory floodgates opened up. Great fun. I’ve also been burned too many times by e-shops. Going through it right now with LEGO LOTR. If I’m shelling out $40-$60, I want to have it forever. Additionally, a family where there are multiple devices amongst kids, this has simply been the best option for our family. We simply can’t afford (as well as most, I presume) to have digital copies of the same games on each device. As far as business practices go, I’m kind of conflicted. While, I certainly don’t like the idea of a business who’s market is kids and families scamming their customers, I also know that customers approve or affirm those things by their purchase choices. Also, a company simply has to make a profit to survive. The reality is that we’ve got to buy the stuff or pay the price if we want them around. As an old timer who remembers the exact 1987 Christmas year when I unwrapped my brand new Nintendo Entertainment System as well as all the years that were shaped by those consoles/games, characters, and memories made, I’m really grateful that Nintendo is still around. The fact that I can pass down to my kids the same things that brought me joy as a kid because they’re still being reinvented in fresh ways... That’s pretty special and unique. Because I’m so invested, as long as Nintendo continues to keep the characters and stories of these iconic games alive in fresh new ways and keep “play” and “fun” at the center of their focus, I’ll continue to shell out my hard-earned cash for their products. Also, the truth is that Nintendo is not at the top of the list of the gaming market. They simply don’t sell what Microsoft, Sony, or even the Mobile Market does. So, I say, “Nintendo, don’t sell your soul, but do what you can to stay alive. Keep “play” at the center your game development. Keep the cartridges coming. Keep valuing your history and innovation. Keep being Nintendo and we’ll be here for you.” The Switch line has done a great job responding to the modern gamer/consumer wants and needs (sustainability, portability, accessibility). I just saw another video where Takahashi himself announced that Metroid Prime 4’s cancellation was specifically due to the Switch’s limitations, but that production would resume on a “future Nintendo console”. This excites me on so many levels. So, I think the Switch has been a grand slam and they seem committed to improve upon it. That gives me hope that Nintendo has a bright future. ....Oh, and can someone find a way to preserve Miyamoto? Lol
When it comes to shady business tactics I feel Nintendo does a lot less than Sony and Microsoft. I have always liked cartridges over discs, can’t tell you how many disc games have been ruined by a tiny scratch. My original copy of Ocarina of Time is beat all to hell and still works.
Fire 234ghj disc scratching is still very much a big issue... it’s a disc and therefore can be scratched. I bet you also believe that the newer iPhones are waterproof
When I first got my Xbox One to play Master Chief Collection back when it first came out I could only find a copy in Redbox, took it home an hour later 42% installed and disc crapped out. Never had a cartridge fail me.
Cartridges are faster and more reliable than disks, they can't get scratched or chipped either. You can fit an optical drive on a slim handheld system by the way. Sony did it 15 years ago. My PSP 2000 is very slim and light and has an optical drive. It easily fits in my pocket. I normally run digital copies of my games though.
@@MrVlodato Battery life was actually really good and the PSP had a battery that could by removed with a push of a button and swapped with a new one from a cradle charger. Battery life is better with digital copies of games but although the disk takes a bit of battery life it was still pretty good.
Yup, you pretty much have to be really gentle with disc based media. Forget device size and the load times of a spinning disc, you can have a small container of Switch games in the front of a bookbag. Can't do that with Disc without some protective container for your games and they still might scratch or break bumping around in a bookbag.
@@MrVlodato disks were amazing regarding the cool factor, but, in games like Midnight Club 3 Remix, yep, would take a whole minute to load, that was a downside...
I hate to break it to you, but the pads on them are actually guaranteed to get scratches and damage. contact by tension on pads is what kills most SD cards right after read write burn out and it isn't even a maybe... the more you use a SD card or these the less life they have, that is why people get micro SD cards and a standard SD card adapter so they can swap the micro to a new adapter when the pads give.... if you never accidentally damage a disc, using it will never actually damage the disc, but using these will always damage them, you just wont notice it for a while.
If you buy a Switch for DOOM then you're doomed. If you buy a Switch for Mario Kart, Odyssey, Zelda, Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, etc then it is the console to get.. Well, at least if you're willing to pay that much or if you wait for good sales.
@@rubenjanse3065 They occasionally have good sales. I feel like that's why Bandai Namco is porting Naruto Storm 4 later this year because of their sales on Naruto Storm Trilogy.
Made sense until the "forced scarcity". Nah, people were really buying wii consoles so fast stores couldnt keep them in stock, and stores have to wait on Nintendo to make more. As with gane launches like BOTW...really? People wont buy it digital because most parents I onow dont want to put their credit card in any console
and let their kid use it. So now little Jimmy's parents are wondering why there credit card is in the negative digits. That and digital games aren't refundable.
Technically, Switch card capacity could exceed that of a Blu-Ray Disc. Given that it really is just a modified SD card, they could be manufactured in Terabyte capacities.
@@ThyCorruptor very expensive at 1TB sure, right now. But that's mostly because we just got there, and nobody is really buying them in bulk. Full size SD cards that grossly exceeded the capacity of a Blu-ray disc are cheap enough to be disposable, and unlike optical discs they don't wear out from being read.
They are NOT flash memory though. They are ROMs. They're burned at the factory (and yes, that complicates logistics between a game going gold and launch a lot). Same tech Nintendo has been using in all their non-disc consoles. The problem here is that there is absolutely no demand outside Nintendo for ROMs larger than 4GB (everyone's using flash for that) and they have a single company making the larger ones.
Looking for a summary of the video? Come over and take a seat, you've come to the right place. -Some physical games are more expensive because the costs of each cartridge are higher than a blue ray disk until/unless more copies are produced(imagine carrying around a system with a disc reader that *Won't* scratch the disc and have all the features of the switch.. Sounds fun right?) -Like everyone else, they push digital copies(because.. You know.. It's infinitely cheaper for them). -They use artificial scarcity to drive up the interest in their products.(I'll concede this one, but the way he presented was only backed up by one's prior knowledge of seeing them do this.. So, someone who already owns a switch.) The rest is filler. You're welcome for that 10 minutes of your life you just saved.
Artificial scarcity sounds made up for some reason. If I only have lemons and I can't afford strawberries, I'm not offering strawberry lemonade. But if I have a lot of ingredients and many employees to do things for me I have to invest a lot of money into my people and their wellbeing, which means I need to ask of more money from the average customer that comes into my shop. Like a Pokemon, I need to nurture it as well so it gets stronger, but that means every now and then I have to take a trainer's money after winning a battle.
I'm glad so many found this helpful! I would like to add an 'update' to what I said. With how many cartriges have been produced at this point, they are no longer more expensive significantly enough to justify a higher price! Some companies are still charging $10 more and using it as an excuse, they aren't being truthful! That's why so many others don't feel the need to make the same excuse. Unfortunate that the scarcity problem seems to have gotten worse, and spread to more of the industry. Hard to say if it's because of production issues caused by the pandemic or others also using scarcity as an incentive, but Nintendo had promised to fix it 6 months ago, and they seem a rather reliable company as far as promises go when they can be. Shame there are so many scalpers. Hope you all have been fairing alright, and the coming year sees things getting better.
mrHowlll well at least the games are cheaper on cartridges then the Eshop since it’s more expensive also buying cartridges doesn’t take up much storage but if you buy a digital copy it takes more storage making you buying more and cards quicker
When the choice is available, I always buy the physical version of the game. And when you have a backlog of 1000s of games that you want to play, there is no rush to play the newest releases. The benefit to this is getting everything cheaper.
The switch was designed to be easy to develop for to attract developers, after the Wii U that showed them that it’s an important thing to think about when developing a console
Cardridges for the switch are more expensive than CDs / DvDs / BDs because the memories are mask-roms. Mask-Roms are created in the chip factory directly during the waver phase with the "data". The content of these mask-roms can no longer be changed when they are created, since all the data contained therein is physically contained in the chip (through the wiring, the logic modules, connections, etc.). The only way to destroy the data on a mask rom is to destroy the chip. Flash memory, on the other hand, can only keep data safe for a limited time before it is lost. So it may be that data on a flash memory is no longer readable after 10 years because too many memory elements have lost their charge.
Dude, this video is horribly researched. First off, the whole “port old games to new systems for full price” is far from exclusive to the Switch. They do the same thing for every remaster and port (excluding emulation) for every system. The only exceptions I can think of are the Crash and Spyro games. Sure, Switch games can be overpriced, but that particular phenomenon is not unique to the Switch. In most cases, in my experience, games released contemporaneously across platforms (including the Switch) are generally priced the same. Second, Nintendo actually had a number of Square Enix games on their consoles post-PS1, including Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. And that’s not including the large number of handheld games released on Nintendo systems, like Final Fantasy III, Dragon Quest IX, and Bravely Default for the DS. Third, you actually got some things wrong with the origin of the PlayStation. Neither the deal with Sony nor the deal with Phillips involved the creation of a new console; the deal was to make a disc-based add-on for the SNES/Super Famicom. Phillips had actually already made the CDi when that deal was made. Also, the reason why Nintendo broke off the deal had to do with licensing fees being paid on every disc, which was not what Nintendo thought they were going to do. Then with the CDi games, those were a result of Nintendo breaking off the deal with Phillips, too. By breaching the contract, Phillips was allowed to use some of Nintendo’s IP in their own games. Had the original deal with Phillips been fulfilled completely, those games would not have existed. And physical copies aren’t “analog”. For the record, I’m not defending Nintendo, at least not entirely. Their digital storefront policies are horribly anticonsumer, for one. However, I feel like, for a video about the Switch released _three years_ after launch largely about stuff already widely known, you really shouldn’t be making these kinds of mistakes.
Thanks for giving a well thought out response instead of saying "lol lies" and blatantly defending Nintendo. Yours was the first comment to make me think "Oh, so that's why people are disliking this."
Jack Odonnell Not to mention it’s a video about the Nintendo Switch, or it’s supposed to be, but he talks about every other console for some unknown reason.
I buy all my games in physical version and I would do it forever Nintendo has done well to put cartridges on the Switch and it is for several reasons 1- we insert the cartridge of a game, we play directly, no need for a download or an installation and it is thanks to the speed of reading the cartridge 2- the cartridges are much more solid than a blu-ray and they are not touched by scratches 3- for a home console and portable at the same time, the cartridges are more transportable than a blu-ray
If I had to choose between physical cartridges and digital downloads, it's the former every time, because you know that if they one day pulled the plug on digital downloads or your account/data/etc joins the choir invisible, you at least still have a hard copy to play.
Lately, the downloads (and their redemption cards) have been $10 more than the cartridge you get at the store. The only reason I still do the downloads is because I don’t want to lose those tiny cartridges.
The cartridges actually still are a mystery how much they actually hold because remember SD Cards can hold 2 Terabytes of data so in theory they can hold the same amount.
But putting more storage on cartridges makes them more expensive to produce, so they avoid exceeding 32GB even though higher storage capacity is possible.
Nintendo should have worked it out beforehand... That makes them shady... MK11 came on an 8gb cartridge so you basically hace to download the whole thing anyway due to Nintendo being cheap...
No, it's not a mystery, it's a matter of knowing how long addresses that can be used. SD-cards support 2GB of addressable space because of the limits in how long the address can be, SDHC support up to 32GB and SDXC supports up to 2TB. The cartridges for the Switch are based on the SDXC-standard, so 2TB is the limit.
@@theandnewman Yeah I figured this much out as well. Seeing as we have 2 or more games that go over the supposed 32 gig limit. Even heavily compressing the relatively new Doom game it still goes at about 40 Gigs. Edit: got a text while replying so it sent with the text lol. But my main point is the guy in the video saying theres a 32 gig limit is just being a bold faced lie or he genuinely doesnt know what hes talking about but acts like he knows.
When you remarked about digital copies being a reason for Gamestop's decline I immediately thought about all the shady dealings that Gamestop has gotten in trouble for over the years, including selling bootleg versions of games (sometimes proving that these bootlegs were made by the different locations themselves) and numerous cases of fraud. I mean sure, all the shady activities that they have gotten in leagal trouble for may have nothing to do with it, but I am guessing that it does just because of common sense.
@@alandunaway3000 yes, but I would not source them as the cause of Gamestop's decline as they are just a bad company that is constantly finding new illegal ways to earn money
Gamestop are scum! They will cheat you at checkout, not honoring lower prices unless you bring it up. They try to scam me every single time with a couple of dollars. Last time they tried to sell me an open game as new by applying a circular seal on it saying, now it is new until you remove this sticker. Unbeliveable!
@@legmaballshityourchin Plus if it was like a DS card, they would have to put an extra chip inside the cartrige which would take up more room inside the cartrige.
I agree, one thing about it being on the cart is that it would need 2 chips, making the carts slightly bigger and more expensive and also you would be limited on save slots, so Fire Emblem 3 Houses has 25 Save Slots but Fire Emblem awakening on the 3DS has only 3 save slots. So that's also a factor. I wish Nintendo would let me back my saves to my computer like Sony did for the PSP and Vita.
@@rubenjanse3065 It does. You could affort up to 6 games instead of 5 by paying the same amount of money. If you are a more hardcore gamer than I, a 21 Italian guy who shamefully only buys between 1 and 3 games a year, am, you likely notice.

Philips partnered with Nintendo on the canceled SNES-CD but Nintendo had no involvement in CD-i. I was working at a company called Cinemaware in the 80s, and we had a CD-i development workstation when the SNES was still in the demo stage and had yet to be announced. Intel had their own competitor to CD-i that was much more powerful but never made it to becoming a consumer product. It had video codec functionality that was extremely expensive at the time and was still treated as a costly add-on when CD-i and 3DO were in stores. This Intel concept was called Digital Video Interactive or DVI. A few years later Intel recycled the name for a video connection that improved on the ubiquitous VGA.
The remark about the N64 being the start of Nintendo designing consoles to be less graphically intense was definitely wrong. That did not start until the GameCube did poorly. The remarks about artificial scarcity is also wrong. The manufacturing process does not ramp up so quickly. Demand had outstripped their expectations and had they aimed higher just in case and been wrong, they would have ended up with a large amount of inventory that would be hard to sell, cutting profitability. Presumably, that is what happened with the Wii U.
The one thing that bothers me about the switch cartridges is that there is so much space that is wasted when you open the box. They could make smaller boxes with the same size cartridge and have less space I don’t know something about that bothers me.
Probably not actually. Your disc reader likely won't last as long as the carts but discs, if stored reasonably well could outlast lots of cartridges. It all depends how it's treated but chips can go bad pretty quick. On 3DS carts Pokemon Omega Ruby is apparently having a decent number of them fail. Switch carts are pretty similar so if there's a similar bad batch a bunch could die with pretty much no warning.
@ Bryan Miller: Sony Owns the logo used for Blu-ray. They do not actually own the Blu-ray format. The following companies are part of the board of directors concerning the Blu-ray format: Apple Dell HP Hitachi LG Mitsubishi Electric Panasonic Pioneer Philips Samsung Sharp Sony Sun Microsystems TDK Thomson Twentieth Century Fox Walt Disney Warner Bros Those who contributed to the development of the format: Matsushita, Pioneer, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp and Samsung So no, Sony did NOT invent Blu-Ray, nor does Sony own the format, you uneducated imbecile.
Sony being the first to utilize the new format, doesn't mean squat in the ownership department. Sony only owns the logo used for the format, not the format itself. If I bought the rights to the Blu-ray format, I would have to come up with my own logo, because the format and the logo are two entirely different things.
Not to mention some of the outright disinformation contained in this video.... Sony and Nintendo... Nintendo backed out because the way Sony wanted licenses to go on the combo system was like this CD's Sony gets all the money, Carts Nintendo gets all the money. If I was Nintendo I would have thrown the middle finger too. Because all the big games and cheap media it would essentially just been a Sony console.
I've always been one to buy physical copies even if I had to wait. The only exceptions have been DLCs and retro games that don't have a physical copy (at least for that system).
You forgot to mention something important about cartridges on the switch. There is a risk of damaging a CD when it is reading by sudden movements, a cartridge doesn't have this issue. This is way there isn't a mobile game system using CDs.
I didn’t even think of that, but you are right! I remember that happening with my portable CD player before iPods were invented. It also happened to me when moving gaming consoles while they were on
07:30 "This started the Company's tradition of using less graphically intensive hardware" No... it was the Nintendo Wii that started that tradition. The N64 was more capable than the PS1 in 3D graphics, it only had less storage capacity. For handhelds they did it from the start with Gameboy though.
With handhelds, it makes sense. Weaker hardware typically drains batteries less than stronger hardware of the same point in time. Plus, who the heck buys a handheld and expects top-of-the-line graphics? There's a reason consoles are so big compared to handhelds and it's not because they think customers subscribe to a "bigger is always better" mindset.
I hate it when people say you 'have to' pay to play Stadia. You don't. The subscription is optional but is useful because you get free games (only on some of them) sales on most games and you get 5.1 surround sound and 4k. TLDR: you don't need to pay to play Stadia, you just get free games and better stuff but can still play all of the games (unfortunately not destiny 2 I don't think)
Unlike disks for video games, cartridges aren’t a fixed cost. With disks for video games, it doesn’t matter if you are loading 5GB of data or 50GB of data onto them. The cost doesn’t change. A 5GB cartridge is actually cheaper than a 50GB cartridge, as cartridge memory can get pricey. Though a plus to cartridges is they have faster loading times than the disks used for video games.
One of Nintendo’s uses of “forced scarcity” really bugs me. Amiibo. I can’t get Legend of Zelda Amiibos for Skyrim or Breath of the Wild because they’re out of circulation.
The typical price of $60 isn't because of the cartridges when you put in the fact that even games on discs cost more than $60, like God of War: Ragnarök on the PS5.
The 'Switch tax' is essentially the extra 10 or 20 bones that you have to spend to buy a game on the Switch rather than a disc-based Xbox or PlayStation. Since cartridges, which the Switch uses, cost more to make, that increases the price. You can close the video now.
Nononono it's terrible because Gamestop is literally the only store in my town that sells videogames beyond like, Fifa and COD. If it shuts down where am I gonna get Pokemon cards and those juicy physical games??

Flash memory isn't a disc or disk.
From a practical standpoint, no handheld system can work with a disc. With that said, the time will come - likely sooner than any of us think - that an optical drive and discs will be small enough for a handheld console. @@bubbasouth69 Optical drives are dead. This video pointed out a key factor, Discs only replaced cartridges because they could hold more data than cartridges. That is no longer the case. Plus optical drives can fail, the discs can be scratched which corrupts data, a sharp jerk can cause them to skip and cause issues. Where solid state media has absolutely none of those downfalls. In addition to convenience, hosting the game and the bandwidth usage for you to download also costs them money.

Marc Lauzon THANK you, the filler in this video is insane
The explanation to why they r expensive on eShop is because Nintendo knows ur gonna play for it lmao
I picked up on a lot of fallacys in this video.

No modern consoles actually read off a disc looool
Keep being Nintendo and we’ll be here for you.”
The Switch line has done a great job responding to the modern gamer/consumer wants and needs (sustainability, portability, accessibility).

Cartridges are faster and more reliable than disks, they can't get scratched or chipped either. You can fit an optical drive on a slim handheld system by the way. Sony did it 15 years ago. My PSP 2000 is very slim and light and has an optical drive. It easily fits in my pocket. I normally run digital copies of my games though.
i could see battery life taking a hit as well from spinning the disc.

Short answer: they taste bad.
Long answer: they're expensive also.
Technically, Switch card capacity could exceed that of a Blu-Ray Disc. Given that it really is just a modified SD card, they could be manufactured in Terabyte capacities.
Good point.
Yes, for sure but they'd be very expensive at that point.
Uh yeah. Have you seen how much micro SD cards cost?
Sounds fun right?)
-Like everyone else, they push digital copies(because.. You know.. It's infinitely cheaper for them).
-They use artificial scarcity to drive up the interest in their products.(I'll concede this one, but the way he presented was only backed up by one's prior knowledge of seeing them do this.. So, someone who already owns a switch.)
The rest is filler. You're welcome for that 10 minutes of your life you just saved.
Thanks!
Ευχαριστώ πολύ 👍
Thank you
I'm glad so many found this helpful!

When the choice is available, I always buy the physical version of the game. And when you have a backlog of 1000s of games that you want to play, there is no rush to play the newest releases. The benefit to this is getting everything cheaper.
0:44 I think The reason why the games cost more for the switch is because it’s a lot harder to program for the hardware
It is more expensive because Nintendo fans accept everthing Nintendo does. Even if doesn't make sense

I buy all my games in physical version and I would do it forever
Nintendo has done well to put cartridges on the Switch and it is for several reasons
1- we insert the cartridge of a game, we play directly, no need for a download or an installation and it is thanks to the speed of reading the cartridge
2- the cartridges are much more solid than a blu-ray and they are not touched by scratches
3- for a home console and portable at the same time, the cartridges are more transportable than a blu-ray
fouad sk Not too mention load faster and have a longer shelf life.
If I had to choose between physical cartridges and digital downloads, it's the former every time, because you know that if they one day pulled the plug on digital downloads or your account/data/etc joins the choir invisible, you at least still have a hard copy to play.

I was also kinda disappointed that your save data didn’t save on the cartridge for Switch games.
The Gamer: Nintendo and Square's rekindled relationship
What I heard: SUPER MARIO RPG REMAKE
The sad truth is... this video is entirely inaccurate.
The sad truth is... your comment is entirely inaccurate

The one thing that bothers me about the switch cartridges is that there is so much space that is wasted when you open the box. They could make smaller boxes with the same size cartridge and have less space I don’t know something about that bothers me.
I bet those cartridges last longer than each and every game on a disc
Probably not actually. Your disc reader likely won't last as long as the carts but discs, if stored reasonably well could outlast lots of cartridges. It all depends how it's treated but chips can go bad pretty quick. On 3DS carts Pokemon Omega Ruby is apparently having a decent number of them fail. Switch carts are pretty similar so if there's a similar bad batch a bunch could die with pretty much no warning.

So no, Sony did NOT invent Blu-Ray, nor does Sony own the format, you uneducated imbecile.
Sony was the first one to have blu ray ....remember ps3??? First system ever to come with blu ray.
"It's fun, cool, family friendly"
Doom Eternal: Am I a joke to you?
You forgot to mention something important about cartridges on the switch.
There is a risk of damaging a CD when it is reading by sudden movements, a cartridge doesn't have this issue. This is way there isn't a mobile game system using CDs.
I didn’t even think of that, but you are right! I remember that happening with my portable CD player before iPods were invented. It also happened to me when moving gaming consoles while they were on
PSP would like a word with you.
Square Enix also released another Dragon Quest game for the DS before the switch

And in geneal, don't need installation (when the game is full on cartridge)
@@lucaspereirahmj it's too bad some devs are too lazy to even do that (I'm looking at you Capcom).
The CunninLynguist Don’t forget about Activision.
One of Nintendo’s uses of “forced scarcity” really bugs me. Amiibo. I can’t get Legend of Zelda Amiibos for Skyrim or Breath of the Wild because they’re out of circulation.
"The Nintendo Switch is the Best Console in the History of Media"
PLaystation And Xbox Gamers: TRIGGERED
The title of best console would go to either the PS2 or the SNES.
whoops...
I mean, it’s MY personal favorite. And I’ve owned most of the big ones since the late 80s.
You can close the video now.
and the portability of the Switch and ability to play said games on the go totally justifies the extra cost in the eyes of many, including me.
plus the initial cost of the system is cheaper as well, not to mention the fact that its the producer's choice to give a product a certain price
Yes ima not going to stop buying switch games
Me neither.
I don't get this. Why?
Zach gatcha They want to have gun playing games.
@@Cheeser_bobeeser Because Nintendo exclusives are mostly amazing games, and handheld ports of big third party stuff is also amazing
Just because of a video from a dude who makes weird top 10s
This video has a lot of over simplications and half-truths.
It feels like research wasn't the top priority.
You forgot about PS Now, which is PlayStation's game ''Netflix'', with its massive over 650+ game catalogue, while Xbox X pass only has over a 100.
"Notice how Gamestop isn't doing well recently?" Wait, I thought this was a list of bad things.
Nononono it's terrible because Gamestop is literally the only store in my town that sells videogames beyond like, Fifa and COD. If it shuts down where am I gonna get Pokemon cards and those juicy physical games??
There's a very long list of things wrong with Gamestop.
Well it does provide people with "jobs" , the job itself is extremely easy to do. I would do that instead again, instead of my 16 hour job but considering gamestop pays to cheap in my area, not worth with my current job. I know how people can be entitled to jobs. People now a days are lazy, expect a check hand out for doing nothing.
In my gamestop they always trying to scamm and my yugioh cards cost like 10$ more then in the internet, hope they burn in hell
@@koilamaoh4238 to be completely fair, a job is a job, but each store has what 4 employees and a manager, that can't be more than a thousands or so jobs total for the company so if i result to purchasing digitally and Game stop goes away, there are many other places hiring that can they can work at! Plus large department stores offer the games as well!
"after all people won't wait till their local Walmart restocks Pokemon sword and shield or breath of the wild."
Me: I did that...
I did too.
I did that with animal crossing.
Anakin: loses hands
Luke: loses hand
Leia: loses han
Ironic
How many times am i gonna hear this joke, hell Its even on non Star wars videos
@Tom Toppler anakin also lost one of his legs
Ok. How’s this related to the video at all?
A digital purchase can be taken from you at any moment. You own nothing. If you have a cart or a disc, then you have a physical representation of the game that will work decades from now, and nobody can take it away from you.
8:20
You clearly forgot about all of the Dragon Quest Games and also Remakes that were released on the GBA, DS, and 3DS.
He also forgot fantasy crystal chronicles series was out for the nintendo....pkus i thought the reason ff7 onwards wad sony only is because they purchased the exclusive rights to the franchise until final fantasy was launched for sony and micrisoft
"Original" Genesis v.s Super Nintendo console wars? Somebody missed the Atari vs. Intellevision vs. Colecovision wars of the early 80s! ;)
the console wars so intense they killed home consoles as an entire industry until the NES revived it. gonna start a pool on how long it takes TheGamer to mess that one up (TL;DR they used the R.O.B. pack-in to call it a "toy") and make it about their deal with Atari falling through. taking bets as low as $5
Right?! And genesis took a jab at NES. Not Super Nintendo. Super Nintendo was a response that came out years later. This guys facts are way off.
I feel like digital copies should be 15 to 25 percent cheaper
Bobby Ruiz it’s a nintendo policy that the prices have to be the same
No because physical copies would sell less causing studios to lose more money on sales because they have to produce these physical copies that arent selling as much while the game is selling for cheaper somewhere elese.
Sometimes the eShop is two times as expensive as the physical copy on Amazon for example
@@rubenjanse3065
The devs choose the games pricing on the E-Shop. Also, eshop games on sale all the time. I got MK11 for 10 dollars on the E-Shop
Watching this while wrapping up the switch I bought for my son's birthday and planning to buy either digital or cartridge copy of ZELDA...I thought I was watching the history of the world LOL!
Behold
The dumbest conspiracy theory I have heard in a while

LilSoonerFanInMO Which part? Artificially low stocking the Switch? That parts real. It’s a common marketing strategy.
@@mrdjr6544 Artificial. Sure.
The same company that clearly doesnt understand online play (much less voice chat) is somehow also smart enough to keep units from peoples hands.
You tell me how that makes sense
Fire 234ghj and Microsoft, google and Sony aren’t major corporations?
Fire 234ghj And just cause Nintendo is a major company I should be scared/worried of them? I don’t care about their prices or whatever the guy talked about in his video. Nintendo makes fantastic games and consoles and as long as I’m enjoying it they are doing a great job. Yet another video just full of dumb theories nobody cares about.
@@niya170 Im not saying you shouldnt be worried about them, but my point is this video is well beyond over dramatic
As soon as the dude said “must watch” I was like, how about NO
All they want you to do is buy it digital so you run out of space faster. Therefore leading you to buying there 60$ SD card to make more money.
