Nintendo's got some balls this generation, ditching those cross-gen titles and aiming for a fresh start with their new Switch. And you know what? Doctre's right on the money. The guy's a goddamn wizard with his videos, always hitting the nail on the head. Keep up the phenomenal work, Doctre! You're killing it, and I couldn't agree more with your take. Here's to an exciting new era for Nintendo!
To play devil's advocate, Metroid is not an evergreen franchise. It makes most of its sales in the first couple of months of release. It's not a Pokemon, 3D/2D Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, Animal Crossing, etc., which are actual evergreen titles that sell millions years after launch. A hypothetical MP4 releasing around holiday 2024 and then a new console releasing early 2025 is not going to hurt MP4 that much.
A cross platform launch for Switch + Switch 2 will not only guarantee maximum sales for the game, it will add tremendous value to the Switch 2 right out the gate, it will establish Metroid Prime's brand as a prestigious, next gen game just like BotW which will enhance its appeal for new customers vs being an "old Switch game" by the time the Switch 2 comes out
@Doctre81 I agree it's an option, but there's a marketing/kinetic difference between a simultaneous release with the next generation and a late port/patch. In the eyes of the industry, Metroid Prime 4 would be considered "old news" and a Switch 1 game through and through. But if you asked anyone if BotW was a Wii U game, 99% would say no because its branding was heavily tied to Nintendo's next generation. And as such, it continued to sell alongside the Switch hardware and was marketed as a Switch game. It enhanced the Switch brand by association and vice versa
Most people won’t care about a Switch 2 patch by that point if the game has been out a while on the OG Switch. The honeymoon phase will be over by then.
They should make the game exclusive to switch 2 then. I won't be a "next gen" game If they have to make It run on the old system too, It will just run better on the new console. I don't think that this crossgen strategy is a good idea, they should focus on one version or the other
At this point the best thing to do in my opinion would be to hold off until Switch 2 launches and make Prime 4 a duel release. Let Switch 2 launch with either 3D Mario or Mario Kart 9, have the other one be the big holiday title, and sandwich Prime 4 in between them in the Summer some time. That way the Switch 2 version doesn’t get cannibalized by Mario games, which will greatly increase sales and the OG Switch fans who haven’t upgraded yet are happy as well. A duel release is a win win.
If the next Switch wasn’t rumored to have been delayed in order to help bolster the launch lineup, then I probably would’ve disagreed with this take, because remember Nintendo reported 1-2 Switch had shipped nearly a million copies and then shipped more than 2 million by April of 2018. So clearly launching with a console can help a game, but like you said if there’s huge games alongside the system day 1, then I’m not sure how much launching with the next Switch would help, opposed to launching now and dropping a patch for the Switch 2 later.
i have always felt the best way to maximize sales potential for Prime 4 is to release the game simultaneously on base Switch and the new Switch... take advantage of the 140+ mil install base while also using the game as a graphical showcase for the new hardware... so not the Twilight Princess treatment as TP released on Wii first at launch and then on GameCube later... but the BOTW treatment... as that game launched on the Wii U & Switch at the same time... so that would mean a 2025 launch WINDOW game... not day 1 alongside a new open-world 3D Mario entry, no way...
I think if Pikmin is anything to go by, there will be a Prime 2+3 shadow-drop this month and then Prime 4 sometime afterwards. Also, Nintendo has been super port-heavy this generation, so even if it's not simultaneous, Prime 4 will probably also be on the Switch 2.
All valid points....but it could also help to be launch game. There's ALWAYS gonna be a Mario game next to it on shelf no matter the time. But the overall limited amt of other games avail at launch could help it. Plus it'll be on OG switch too anyway
People who only have enough for the console and one game probably arent buying the console at launch anyway, and people who do get it at launch will want more than one game to play
My concern with Metroid Prime 4 coming next year is there's going to be a lot of games coming out. Doom and GTA 6 to name a few, and that's not even considering rumors of a new 3D Mario on Switch 2. If Dread had a hard time selling 3 million copies, I don't see why people think releasing it next year is a good idea. There's nothing going on this fall, it's the perfect opportunity to put Metroid on the spotlight. I just hope Nintendo doesn't drop a new Mario Party two weeks after its release 😂
Laws with Mario 3D new game because that is Evergreen and that will sell and sell so it doesn't matter if there's a few consoles out there it'll keep selling throughout the life of the system but yeah if they wait a bit on Metroid you want to have more consoles in people's hands before you release Metroid
IT Saddens me to say, but I don't think PM4 will sell, especially with Nintendo and retro putting so much into prime. The remastered metriod prime was absolutely awesome, but only sold 1m copies, with an installed base of 140m switchs. To me you have your answer there. I pray I'm dead wrong. I hope Prime 4 sells more than metriod dread. But i fully agree with the DR,its make or break for prime series.
It’s a 20 year old game that sold less than 3 million copies on the GameCube and they shadow dropped it for Switch. Some pre release marketing would have helped a lot and frankly could have doubled sales. Prime 4 is going to be an entirely different animal and Nintendo is going to market the hell out of it.
5:44 This would be the same situation as with Xenoblade chronicles 2. Compared to 3 which was leagues better even being nominated for GOTY, It ended up selling less than 2. I believe it was because XC2 had the "launch hype" sales and less competition.
If this is the case (holiday release), the game should be sold with a free digital upgrade for the switch 2. That is going to be the ideal situation for any metroid fan
Launch a 3D Mario and then maybe 3 to 6 months later launch the Metroid Prime 4 go ahead and announced that it launches which to but give people some time to save their money for Metroid Prime
Zelda went from a 5 million selling series to 30 million because BOTW was such a quality launch title. Metroid is in the exact same predicament. Nintendo has every opportunity to raise the profile of the series. They’re not here to “test” or find out how popular Metroid is. They’re here to sell copies. It does NOT matter if people buy it because of launch hype.
@@Doctre81yea but I think he’s saying it has the potential to grow it’s fanbase if it’s a launch title. I’m a person who played Nintendo games for years and botw got me back into Zelda for the first time since GBA and GC

Hard disagree, bro. You made the popularity point and audience test point for a holiday release. Here's the problem: Switch 2, if we assume its pre launch cycle goes like switch did, will be revealed likely before Prime 4 launches. And Metroid Prime is already a niche series that doesn't do well outside the west. Switch 2 reveal will likely do serious damage to the sales chances since more people that might have bought it will hold off immediately from buying it until they have the superior switch 2 version. And that will stunt the game's performance potentially to a dangerous extent in Nintendo's eye. A switch 2 launch window release is the best way to handle it,imo.
I just want it to come out already but not because I'm gonna play, I've never liked metroid games whether it's 2d or 3d, I just want it out so people can stop always asking for it and move on already, it's so annoying

Agreed, this crossgen idea is wishful thinking in my opinion. Nintendo won't make two versions of the game just to make it run better on the new hardware, at least not at launch. Unless there's a gimmick in the new console to make it apart, like twilight princess with the motion control on wii and the portability of the switch version of breath of the wild, I don't see it happening
what nintendo could do, is launch switch 2 with prime 4 as the only major title, and bring mario kart a month or so later, like with the switch and breath of the wild. huge gamble, but hey
