i used a gameboy camera in my btec photography course cos im a bit of a nob. to get the pictures off, i used a classic dmg with a backlight, removed the screen cover and put it on a scanner. did the trick tbh.
I've never had one, and sadly the prices of GameBoys and the cameras are too high nowadays to justify it. I do like picking up old digital cameras on the cheap though, and messing around with them, the nostalgia factor is real for someone who grew up in the late 90s and 2000s.

I use the GB Operator by Epilogue to get the pictures of my GB Cam, but the Joey Jo-Jo Junior Shabadoo is way cooler for doing this while running around 😲

I believe FiiO make a Lighting to USB-C OTG Cable, called the LT-LT1. Technically designed for plugging in a headphone amp, but it's a data connection so it should work well!
@@ragnkja I wouldn't say they are common, but a quick search did come up with a few. You just want to search for OTG. Cables that don't work that I saw had something along the lines of "for charging only" in the description. I couldn't find any with a quick search that connect a computer USB-C to an iPhone, so I'm not sure if that combination just isn't very common, or you get that cable with an iPhone normally.

Part of me feels like opening up and replacing the innards of the GameBoy and its camera to fundamentally change it is a big risk. It will no longer be the thing you love. I respect your choice, of course, I just would have bought a second device for modification and retained the first in its original state because I'm sentimental. Such a weird coincidence, I spent the whole video wondering what matt would look like with a less poofy hairstyle, and then BOOM, that advertising segment happened.
Shit, why didn't I know about this earlier? After this video already existed, I bought a similar but less handy device from some Romanian company. They sent it out, but this f***ed up delivery service in Germany marked it as delivered, while I never saw a delivery man or the package. It got lost and I paid the bill....... Now I wanna order this thing, but I'll be making sure to communicate first to make sure such BS isn't happening again. Seems like a freaking cool device and finally I can pull the picture from my camera, that had been sitting there for 3 years. They are important, like one from a deceased friend....... Also I wanna do more photos with it, the concept of "demakes", if it falls into this category, is very interesting to nerds like me. Of course it would be sooooo simple to take a smartphone shot and demake it into something, that looks like a GB Camera shot, but that would be cheap and it doesn't replicate the look exactly. But most importantly, it makes a difference to know, if such a photo never even existed with more detail at any point. Like the one of my deceased friend. That photo only exists in this form, has never been anywhere else yet. It gives a feeling to those picture, the feeling what people wanted NFTs to have. The sense, that something digital is something special. Modern tech can do so incredbly much, so that it becomes appealing, when something can do less and you get something done with least ressources. Yeah, it's weird. But that is why we are nerds.
I bet you can build an app that blows up the photos into higher resolution too. Or classifies them. Or plenty of stuff. 100px x 100px is kind of the perfect size for a CNN
I got a 120x160 pixel thermal camera in my phone. And its equally low fi. Bht sadly rhe narive up upscales it horribly. I want to see the raw pixels oe nearest upscaled. Perhaps its time for me to write my own little app.
Hi Matt, I’d be really interested to know if this lets you do the opposite as well, i.e put photos back onto the camera cartridge from pc/phone. The motivation being able to put pictures back on later for printing or even downscaling and grey-scaling any picture and putting it into the gbcam memorh.
Now I'd like someone to tackle the other half of this equation - a USB adapter for the printer. Being forgetful, it would genuinely be useful to have a tiny printer for notes. Also, I had no idea you were at Makers Central last weekend Matt or I would've hunted you down to say hi. Just so you know.

The dates are hardcoded into the Joey. The file system is fully emulated depending what is plugged in. That date would have been when we created the file system template.
I feel like this might be like lighting the blue touch paper, but: have you considered making a colour wheel, so then you can combine there B&W pictures with RGB filters to get a Colour GameBoy Camera Photo? As I know you do have a 3D printer handy to make mounting hardware (plus likely a tripod mounted for your GameBoy Pocket)

I love the pocket operator beats in the background. The arcade is great, I've heard it in a few places (like a couple of Penelope Scott songs) and I used to love jamming with it on the bus
I remember The 8-Bit Guy did the screen upgrade years ago (edit: I misremembered, that was just a backlight mod for a Gameboy Color), it was a bit fiddly because the case had to be modified. I would expect the solutions you can get today are better in this regard.

Considering the EU's regulations forcing Apple to use USB C on i-phones, this kind of thing is going to be a lot easier for iphone users!
