*Fun Fact:* Punjab province/state is not exclusive to India, Pakistan too has a larger Punjab province with sizeable Sikh population, however Khalistanis only want land carved out of India, and not Pakistan, because Khalistan is a project by Pakistan under its _"Bleed India by 1000 cuts"_ doctrine.

Edit: To address everyone once and for all about the claims "Pakistan doesn't have sizeable Sikh population", remember the white portion in Pakistani flag is supposed to represent the minority, and indeed in 1947 there were 20 percent minorities, and *Sikhs had sizeable population in Pakistan is no false statement,* atrocities on minorities is no secret in Pakistan and additionally both countries were supposed to be secular so it wasn't even forced migration after independence and therefore those Sikh numbers make a part of Pakistani identity, in fact since this is true even in India there are more Muslims than Pakistan's entire population, Pakistan not keeping its end of the promise doesn't entitle it to change the fact that is real.

You forgot to mention that Indian government had asked for Parmar’s extradition before the Air India bombing. It’s should have been easy as both nations are part of the commonwealth. However Justin Trudeau’s dad Pierre denied the request because Indian government didn’t consider the Queen (of England) a head of state.

I'm neither Indian nor Canadian, but I am fascinated by how immigrant groups are often much more nationalistic and radical than the people back home. In particular, I'm from Croatia and my impression is that immigrant Croatians in Germany and Australia often tend to care much, much more about historical issues and our grudges with our neighbors than most people that I know in Croatia.
it's because - 1. Many people who leave the country, are stuck in a time warp, whereas people in the country tend to move on with times. 2. Many people who leave, leave because of a political situaiton/event, so they are self-selecting to be mroe passionate about it.

Yes, even back here in India, only a minuscule portion of the Sikh population entertains the notion of Khalistan. Sikhs are widely regarded as exemplary citizens, with a significant presence in various spheres - from holding the position of Prime Minister and high-ranking politicians to commanding all three branches of the armed forces. They are well-represented in academia, sports, and the entertainment industry, and staunch patriots by raising three distinct regiments in the Indian Army from the state of Punjab alone. We often joke about that when Canadian Sikhs want to make Khalistan, not Indians so why don't they make that in their own homeland that is Canada. Most of Canada's land is Khali Sthan (empty space) anyway.

As a Indo-Australian from a Sikh background, it’s super interesting to see the difference in discourse and culture with regards to Khalistan. My entire life I haven’t really seen anyone here share that rhetoric for support for the movement - or most people just don’t care at all or are indifferent. Seeing this play out in Canada, and in its politics - is super interesting.

Seems like Canada accepted a lot more refugees during and after the anti-Sikh riots/ethnic cleansing in the 1980s than other countries. That paired with the fact that most Canadians live in just a couple cities like Toronto or Surrey meant that all these refugees fleeing violence all clustered together and kept that hotbed of extremism alive in Canada while the movement died out everywhere else.
Having lived in both Canada and now Australia I can explain some differences: Australia has been more nationalistic whereas Canada is based more on tribalism. This tribalism has manifested itself in the 1984 Multiculturalism Act and created even further division in society. It has been exploited by unvetted Sikh migrants who enter politics in order to further the interests of their own tribe. Australia is protected from foreign interest groups usurping power by section 44 of the Australian constitution. The referendum next week will be a test if Australians are willing to allow a special interest group (i.e. Marcia Langdon) from gaining control over the federal government in order to drive her own agenda. Vote No!

A very balanced presentation. There is one point that is missed in the ending. In India, both parties are united on this issue (a rare occurence). In many ways, this is an issue that concerns the opposition Congress party more than the ruling BJP. It was the Congress party supremo, Indira Gandhi, who was assasinated by the Khalistanis in 1984 - her death celebrated with a float (depiciting her assassination) in Canada a few weeks ago. It was Mrs.Gandhi who was pleading with the senior Trudeau to extradite the soon-to-be Air India bombing planner. It was the Congress in power when the two Air India bombs went off. Yes, two Air India bombs - the second one exploded on the ground in Tokyo resulting in 2 deaths vs 300+. The BJP could have taken the petty politics route and dismissed most of this as insults to his arch-rival congress party. The fact is that the BJP and Congress are in complete sync on this issue - it's not just a Modi/BJP thing.
It doesn't matter, like always when it's about Indians, who cares. Murdered million Jews, Hitler become worst leader ever, but million Indians died because of Churchill's lack of empathy to poor Indians, no one gives a fck. We should grow economically, be suspicious of west as much as that we don't become their ally, stay neutral, solve our crisis with China and focus on making Indians rich.

Very well written and is true. This issue is more associated with Congress then BJP. Also if we look at the creation of whole this problem, that is rise of Bhindranwale, lawlessness in Punjab with killing of both Sikhs and Hindus, Operation Bluestar, Delhi Pogram 1984, Killing of Miss Gandhi, then Op Black thunder 1986 and 1988 and then cleansing of extremists till 1995, killing of Beant Singh in 1995 etc. These all are directly associated with the Congress.

I'm from India and not a Sikh. I'd been following this issue for a while. There haven't been one, who actually put things to perspective; like its been done here. Truly unbiased and exceptional. Like the turban they wear, the Sikh community are a kind of pride to our country. Its really sad to know that the complete community is been shamed because of some handful of miscreants. I just hope that this ends soon. Once again, a beautiful commentary.
Turbans as a source of pride? If this tradition is so deserving of pride and admiration why wouldn't they make life better in Punjab province rather than moving to another country and then not adopting the traditions there?
I think it's very fair to say that the reverse would not be very welcome at all, Canadians traveling to that part of the world and retaining their native North American freedoms culture and traditions would be very unwelcome and most likely in danger.

Just looking at headline gdp figures doesn't tell one the full reality of life in India or Punjab, in Punjab the higher education institutions tend to be underfunded, while the state like much of the country has an unemployment problem with the state economy being relatively stagnant in comparison to the national economy (state went from having one of the highest per capita gdp in the country in the 80s-90s to being close to national average today), all of this is ignoring the agricultural situation or state politics.

The gross GDP figures, the military spending, or the swagger on the world stage don't often paint an accurate picture of the realities of the life of an average (average, not privileged) Indian. The country is overcrowded, jobs are still not easy to come by unless one is educated in an elite school, too many people are possibly competing for limited resources. Given these stark realities, why would anyone not look for greener pastures? In fact, even those who are privileged leave India.
Having friends who are from Canada, friends who are Sikh and some acquaintances who are from India, this was a very interesting experience over the past week or so.

I remember the air india flight bombing off the coast ireland, it was one of the worst terrorist attacks in the republic and it is remembered as probably the biggest terrorist attack in cork in modern history (obviously after the civil war and war of independence), it was tragic. the bodies were recovered and transported to cork airport by helicopter and it was pretty sureal according to people who saw it. today there is a memorial near ahakista village in west cork, it was something that was shocking at the time

I'm from BC, I was born 10+ years after 1985 but I never knew about that attack. No one taked about it in school, it wasn't in our curriculum, and I've never heard anyone talk about it otherwise.
My theory as to why is that it's an "older" event and while the plotting occurred on Canadian soil, the actual deaths did not.

@krateproductions4872 everyone's different, I can only speak for myself. I despise Trudeau. I also despise Modi. The moment I heard of Nijjar's murder coming after the Ripudaman Singh murder, my first thought was this looks like India taking a page out of Mossad's playbook.
I do want the Indian govt to be investigated, but I also want that investigation to include their claims that Nijjar was a terrorist and India had sought his extradition since a long time but Canada wasn't cooperating, maybe because of Canadian politicians pandering to the khalistan lobby.
The one gripe I do have is that almost no Canadian commentators are covering the history of the khalistan movement, which makes Quebec separatism look like a bar fight. The violation of the holiest Sikh shrine in 1984 by sending in the army was to smoke out armed insurgents who were hiding in it. In response, they assassinated the sitting prime minister of India. Her party responded with a pogrom against Sikhs in Delhi, which hugely strengthened the Khalistan movement, which in a few years became a full fledged armed insurgency in Punjab which killed many thousands, assassinated elected leaders and got funding from the Diaspora in Canada, UK etc.
Canadians can better understand the Indian state's paranoia by comparing the khalistan movement to the IRA, not to Quebec separatism. If the IRA were to start reviving and organizing today, I'm sure the British govt wouldn't be too happy about it.

Sikh in India are revered. As a woman in India, having a Sikh brother in a room, has an automatic response of being safe. They are synonymous with brave, honour bound and honest with deep sense of national pride and service towards humanity. They command respect in our heart for all that they have sacrificed for our country. I'd like to think I'm knowledgeable about international politics, but I have say I had little idea of a Punjab independence movement. I know that Indira Gandhi was killed by her Sikh bodyguards, but thought that was revenge over the Golden Temple massacre. In the past it seemed that Sikhs were the elite in India - has that changed?
Although I'm not familiar with the 'Khalistani' movement, there is no disgrace in wanting a separate homeland. If you can't campaign by peaceful means, then it's not really surprising violent groups will rise up.

I'm not sure I'd call them an elite though, and there have been instances of anti-Sikh rhetoric and violence (althought not as severe as some people claim). Mrs Gandhi's bodyguards did indeed kill her over the massacre at the Golden Temple. That incident was actually related to the Khalistan movement. The men holed up in the Temple were Khalistani terrorists, and the Indian military only resorted to violence after negotiations with the men inside failed. In fact, a Sikh Commander was put in charge of the operation on the groud in an attempt to help smooth over tensions. Unfortunately, a combination of the army's failure to adequately warn civilians of what they intended to do, and the use of civilian crowds as human shields by the terrorists, led to a large number of civilian killings, turning what should have been a fairly straightforward (albeit quite contentious) operation into a massacre and a tragedy.

So your situation was such that in Indian Punjab, Hindus were in majority and Sikhs were in less population. But till now everything was correct. But now Pakistan enters here. Pakistan wanted Indian Kashmir and for this they fought two wars with India till 1965 but they did not get success. On the contrary, in 1971, Pakistan was divided into two pieces, Pakistan and Bangladesh, after which they decided to leave direct war and start non-conventional war. . For this, he worked to instigate Sikhs to create instability in India, supplied guns and drugs to Punjab's part, promoted separatism and started funding the separatists. *Often all the Khalistani and common Sikhs claim that they were tortured and massacred in 1984 but they do not tell the events before that* , let me tell you that. Before 1984, target killing and massacre of Hindus had become common in Punjab. Now coming to the issue of your Golden Temple massacre. This is the year 1984 when Khalistani terrorist General Singh Bhindranwala and his supporters captured Harvinder Sahib alias Golden Temple, the holiest site of the Sikhs, and took hundreds of people inside hostage. Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi ordered the Army to conduct an operation to free Harmandir Sahib from the clutches of terrorists and this operation was named Operation Blue Star. The Army did the same, they entered inside the Golden Temple and killed all the terrorists including General Singh Bhindranwala and the Golden Temple was liberated. Resentment increased among the Sikhs over the fact that firing was carried out in their most sacred place. After that, Indira Gandhi is shot dead by her own two Sikh bodyguards. This increases the hatred among the general public supporting Congress, as a result of which Anti-Sikh riots take place in Delhi and parts of Punjab in 1984, in which many innocent Sikh people were killed.
That was the whole story of pre 1984.

In his book "Waging War from Canada" , the author Mike Pearson explains how the Canadian system harbours terrorists and allows their movements to flourish. Home grown terrorist groups such as the FLQ and Mohawk Warriors received mild sentences for their crimes. The television series "Air Crash Investigation" Season 5, Episode 7; displayed how the race card was played by one of the bombers who effectively used The Multiculturalism Act to prevent the counter staff from questioning his activities. It was Air India's own team that did a proper investigation where the CSIS bungled it. The Canadian example is a display how a government will spend more on tribalism than it's own defense. The Canadian taxpayer will pay for all of this.

He was sentenced to 20 years but got out early. In those days, sentences were pretty meaningless because you could get parole so early. I believe the system is more honest now, with sentences explicitly stating how much time must be served “before the possibility of parole.”

There's an incredible ammount of similarities between the Canada-India conflict and the Sweden-Turkey conflict. There's similarly a significant number of Kurds in Sweden, and a tendency by politicians to be sympathetic to their plights leading to the downplaying of Kurdish terrorism in Turkey which (understandably) annoys the Turks. They've repeatedly demanded Kurds be extradited on terrorist charges, and Sweden has consistently refused. In our case, it blew up over the NATO accession veto. It's a complicated case - on the one hand, you can be sympathetic with the fury when Western countries shelter what (they perceive to be) terrorists and take a nonchalant attitude to what is a national security threat to them, on the other the actions/demands of those countries in response are unacceptable.
There is a simple solution, the West should realize that the colonial era is over. Or else, more powerful Oriental states will use exert their strengths and force the weaker Occidental states to come begging at the negotiation table.

They intermarry often, speak the same language, the founders of Sikhism were all Hindus, etc. India's prime minister has been a Sikh. As someone who studied the Turkish Diaspora, you are forgetting one country that has the largest Turkish and Kurdish community outside of Turkey and the Middle East, which is Germany and Austria. I suspect it's a religious politics problem within some temples across Canada. I worked with one Sikh who told me his temple came knocking on his front door after he stopped attending. They had the gall of guilt tripping him and implying he was a bad Sikh if he didn't show support by giving them a donation.

Context: Pew Research Poll 2020 found that 95% of Sikhs are 'very proud' of their Indian identity. Sikhs are 2% of the population yet have 10% share in the Indian armed forces.
As an Indian currently in Canada, I have to say this was incredibly balanced and well thought out. The insight on how political candidates are selected is much appreciated. I just have a few additional thoughts to add, which might give you and your viewers some insight.
1. As a ''post-nation'' state, Canada's biggest long term threat is going to be to integrate immigrants into its own political culture and preventing them from bringing their grievances from home. Former BC Premier Ujjal Dosanjh did a brilliant podcast on this topic recently. One of the main reasons for the Indian government's response is that it is Canadian citizens in Canada who are raking up Indian political issues. Since India constitutionally prohibits multiple citizenship, the Khalistanis in Canada are by definition ''foreigners'' and have no right to participate in Indian politics. Thus Khalistanis would be better serve participating in Canadian politics instead of raking up issues of Indian politics from Canada.
2. What the Canadian government and the West doesn't realize is that the definition of a ''democracy'' is a little different in India compared to the West. I would consider India to be an ''electoral'' democracy and nothing else. Governments and public institutions are often authoritarian by design and our constitution limits freedom of speech and expression for secessionism, threats to public order and calls to violence. This is seen as ''undemocratic'' in the West but by large portions of Indian voters as necessary evils to maintain territorial integrity and public order. The only opportunity Indians get to participate in the process of governance is in federal or state elections. In my mind, Indian culture is generally more deferential to hierarchy and authority similar like say China, Japan or Korea, none of which have a long history of democracy, in the case of Japan only after WWII.
This does not change the fact that Modi is genuinely popular, that elections are free and fair and that there is a legitimate opposition in India unlike in Russia, China or Iran. Confusing cultural authoritarianism with lack of democracy demonstrates a lack of understanding in the West about the different ''flavours'' of democracy.
3. The Indian population is by and large united on issues of foreign policy and zero tolerance of threats of territorial integrity. Literally every opposition party like the Congress (which ironically presided over the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, a blot on our history) supports the government's stand. There is broad consensus on issues like non-alignment in the Ukraine war and buying oil and weapons from Russia and being tough on nations that harbour separatists that threaten Indian territorial integrity. India does not have a history of expansionist foreign invasions like most of the West does. Thus any lecturing by the West when we are trying to protect territorial integrity rejected by all people in the political spectrum.
4. Punjab is actually a broader region that includes an entire province of present day Pakistan. Punjab historically has had a roughly 1/3rd split b/w Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus on a roughly West to East direction. Hundreds of thousands of Sikhs left Western (Muslim majority) Punjab after partition and fled to India. One striking feature of the Khalistan movement is the complete absence of their demands for any part of Pakistan in their homeland. Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism was born in Nankana Sahib, in present day Pakistan. He died at Kartarupur Sahib, which is also in Pakistan. The capital of the Sikh Empire was in Lahore, present day Pakistan. In India this obviously demonstrates that the movement is funded and aided by Pakistan.
I guess India doesn't have much experience with respecting the rule of law and sovereignty of other nations, and just because India never went on a global campaign of conquest doesn't mean it gets to disrespect other nations sovereignty now. The reason those norms are in place in the west is largely because of the west's bloody past, and the lessons learned from it to never repeat it again. The assassination of a foreign citizen on foreign soil is a gross violation of a country's sovereignty, and if India feels comfortable doing it now as a rising power, how much more will they when they become one of the world's most powerful nations?

As Indian I can tell Sikh is highly respectable community throughout India. Every city, county, people will see gurudwara and langer running there is no discrimination in any part of India. Also most people ignore how caste plays a bigger role than religion, 99.9% of Khalistanis are Sikhs of Jutt caste, which is just 18% of Punjab's population but they are extremely rich community that owns 85% land in Punjab. Almost all the major Sikh politicians in Canada are Jutts.
I've met many Sikhs of different castes, Khatris, Rajputs, Ravidassiya and they are all pro India, most Jutt Sikhs are pro India too(for every Bhindranwale we have a KPS Gill) , but during the 80s and 90s a lot of anti India Jutts moved to Canada (and now they form a huge population there).

Something that leaves a question in my mind....why is most of the rhetoric of the Khalistani Movement targeted against India, while Pakistan is rarely mentioned. if we took a look at a historical religious census and a modern one, Sikhs have been persecuted much more in Pakistan than in India. Something about that all seems suspicious.
The Khalistanis have released a map of their proposed land in which most of the land was outside Punjab in places where Sikhs never controlled and where Sikhs only constitute a negligible minority. However, they don’t show places in Pakistan which was part of the historical Sikh empire with the most important capital city of Lahore. The truth is that the Khalistan movement is a movement by the Pakistani ISI agency to avenge how India helped Bangladesh gain their independence.

Well its complicated and its a product of the fact that the modern Khalistani Movement is in part a consequence of the partition in more ways then you can imagine. I mean I could write a whole essay on this but the main points here would be that partition: 1) United the geographically dispersed Sikh Community. Or to be specific, the Sikh community was spread-out in Punjab pre-1947, and became concentrated following the division of Punjab in partition, 2) It violated promises made to the Sikh community and leadership in-exchange for their support in ensuring that a part of Punjab was going to be in India and 3) It fostered a sense of resentment towards the federal government for having allowed such an event (which later was re-framed in the form of Khalistani claims of Indian persecution)

I wouldn't call Modi's actions balanced though. He is in a party that has used its power to be pretty provocative toward India's (large) Muslim population. It's not wholesale persecution or anything, but (as an example) there has been a consistent move to erase Muslim names from India's maps. Likewise, he has presided over a pretty significant uptick in violent persecution of the country's Christians.

Also india have stopped issuing visa for Canadians and it will hurt the Indian Canadians that were born in Canada and indians that were thinking of applying for Canadian citizenship. Both of these groups have families and relatives back in india that they meet during festivals ,weddings and other celebrations . So they won't be able to attend those things or regularly meet their family members and relatives in india. The fees and spending of international students from india accounts for 5% GDP of Canada's economy and also run their big universities that generate lot of tax money and that tax funds public schools in Canada . Canadian pension funds are invested in Indian stock market to get 10% returns that they won't get from any other major country other than india right now or for even the next decade or two . India imports 30% of all the Canadian pulses from Canadian most agarian city. It might get replaced. Canada have lot to loose in this relationship issue.

I recall in 1990, just before I emigrated from my birthplace of Canada, I came out of a shop on Hastings Street in Vancouver and there was quite a radical group of Sikhs marching down Hastings street demanding a New Khalistan within the borders of British Columbia. My immediate reaction was anger, how could a group of people come into my country, to better their lives and now demand a peace of it. J.J., I was intrigued by the candidate selection process that parties in Canada use. It reminds me of the now-largely-extinct *caucus* process in some U.S. States. The only remnant of this is the way a few states, including Iowa, select delegates to the presidential nominating conventions.
As someone who once ran for political office I agree it’s an odd and antiquated system (to put it mildly). In my riding (where, by the way, my chosen party at the time traditionally comes in a distant third provincially and federally telling me there’s very few party supporters here) someone else signed up to be the representative shortly after me, meaning a nomination meeting was needed. I did try to sign people up but I really saw it as a silly exercise as, honestly, they’re not signing up for any positive thoughts on the party (as explained especially not in my riding) but just as “my friend” which goes against how I feel a democracy should function. Needless to say, at the nomination meeting the meeting was packed with her friends and I lost the nomination 12-3 (the three being me, my wife, and someone else). She did get less votes in the general election than I did in a previous (unsuccessful) school board run (which are non partisan) but as I said since my riding never votes for that party I was with I wasn’t expecting much.

I am a Christian, a doctor, living in Southern India. Well, these are my observations
1) Sikhs living in India and working in the government and Private sector are happy here
2) There are some rogues and gullible kids who are brainwashed and taken to Canada
3) India had 28 states but 70 % of Canadian student visas go to one state of Punjab. That state has a seperate Canadian consulate. Why?
4) Your government is taking their future voters from India and grooming them to be anti India.
5) Also, if they really want a seperate nation, why only from India when 60% of the erstwhile state of Punjab is with Pakistan, including their former capital of Lahore

As an Indo-Canadian, I'm sorry to say that I just want to leave Canada unless things get better with India. Because after all, I'm Indian first, only then I became a naturalized citizen of Canada. So if Canada can't get their act together, I will never be able to go visit my folks back home. Sadly true! As a Sikh man who’s seen these rally’s and has studied the history my opinion is this. The khalistani movement at its core is the small minority who speaks the loudest and a lot of the people in the movement are self indulgent and aren’t practicing what they preach. The history is complex for sure. The movement is not very popular or prevalent in India from what I’ve been told it’s more so the extremists outside that advocate the most. My simple question is this will they return to this newly formed country? Will they put the work in to make it a reality? Will there children and there future generations stay there? There are so many questions that man of the khalistani movement who don’t have answers and are all bark no bite. It’s quite a nuisance tbh. At the end of the day it’s not worth losing the relationship with a country like India over someone who’s had extremist ties and ideology.

Carving out a religious state is not like putting a deposit on a house and moving in when it’s ready. We know how incredibly bloody it becomes. Also, we can all see what has become of Pakistan since its creation.

As a Canadian. I think the primary issue is a Canadian being killed on Canadian soil. Beyond that, the extremist Indians who have been bombarding our public forums with their ill informed, nationalistic rhetoric, are nothing more than parrots who don’t actually offer any credible or useful input on the matter. Canadian democracy is strong and will continue to be so, even under the fake and false scrutiny of a not so democratic “country”.
I feel like it's pretty clear that our government was involved in the killing of nijjar in at least some way. Shouldn't have done that but then again Canada has been a little lax on khalistanis in their country as well. Both the countries are responsible for the current situation here.

Thank-you, finally someone is talking about this correctly. This is an a pressing issue that most Canadians are unaware of and kind of need to be to address it properly and canadian news outlits are suspiciously refusing to delve deeper into this issue.
I doubt anyone is going to address it properly. Political parties, whether Liberal, Conservative or NDP are going to care more about Sikh votes than if they are sympathetic to a separatist movement in a far off country. The average non-Sikh Canadian does not know or care about the Khalistan movement.
India is having some issues with ethnic and religious tensions right now. Modi being a Hindu nationalist is not a big help. India has denied being involved in the assassination while throwing a diplomatic temper tantrum with Canada. Would have been better had they just owned it, claim its no different from the US launching a drone at the current leader of ISIS while ignoring the sovereignty of the country hosting them.

As a Hindu Indian when I saw the title I felt that you'd basically be justifying your government's position on the matter but I'm pleasantly surprised to see a balanced and unbiased analysis.
As for the perception in India about Canada being pro-Khalistan I think that's not entirely the case but it is true that a lot of Indians feel that Canada is also not anti-Khalistan and does not take Indian concerns into account.
Also another thing I want to add is that the vast majority of Sikhs at least in India do not support Khalistan and there aren't any significant religious tensions between the vast majority of Sikhs and Hindus in India.
I don't think Canada standing as anti-Khalistan would be the correct approach either, best to stay out of other countries politics.

I'm not a Canadian or Indian citizen. But I am a Sikh, I definitely don't agree with separatism to deal with potential social issues.
But from an outside looking in perspective, I do see a separate slowly rising tension in India between Punjab and the general North Indian power structure.
Modi seems to have continued to stoke some of the extreme ends of Hindu Nationalism indirectly mostly by downplaying convictions on some of the extreme actions those the minority individuals have taken.
When combined with the worsening socioeconomic Punjab is facing, and what might be less and less support as India shifts to refocus its energy towards geopolitical positioning in the coming years: I do feel that there might be more unnecessary Sikh extremism in India.
I can definitely understand the Indian government's concerns with Canadian accusations, but at the same time the Indian government also has to work on proactively cultivating social development and unity to make sure this doesn't become a self fulfilling prophecy.
@@Barrel4336 Well this is a complicated issue which goes back to the partition of India. Both Hindus and Sikhs were almost universally opposed to the partition and both communities often tend to wrongly blame the Congress for it when the real culprits were the Muslim League.
From the Hindu nationalist perspective since India was partitioned along religious lines and since Pakistan became an Islamic nation then it is only natural that India should become a Hindu nation.
The Sikhs I'd say were the worst affected by the partition because the Sikh homeland of Punjab itself was divided between the two countries. However it must also be noted that Sikhs and Hindus were on the same side at that time.
Also Hindu nationalists generally don't see Sikhs as a separate group and consider then part of the greater dharmic fold so they don't understand why Sikhs would be against it.
Sikhs on the other hand see themselves as a related but distinct religious group so they have been seeking their specific interests in an independent India.
The Congress-led Indian government's heavy-handed approach in dealing with the Khalistani extremism in the 1980s lead to the loss of some innocent Sikh lives. This got complicated further when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards and this was followed by large-scale anti-Sikh riots. But thankfully things cooled down in the subsequent decades.
The current tensions following the rise of the BJP are due to the differences in the Hindu nationalist and Sikh perspectives that I mentioned previously.
As for the socioeconomic condition in Punjab that's also due to several factors.
Firstly the decades of violence are definitely the biggest factor behind it.
But there's also another social factor. Punjab has historically always been a largely agrarian society where industrialization has been low and this continues to the present day.
I feel that these issues can only be solved through peaceful discussions and cooperation and compromise. Violence and separatism is not the answer.
I don't think Punjab could even survive as an independent nation without the rest of India to support it. The same applies to any other region in India. All regions of India are mutually dependent on one another and our strength lies in unity.

My only concern is that historical events don't happen because people make the best decision, but usually because people make very strong emotional decisions without fully understanding the emotional response other parties will have.
The most important player in this in my opinion is the Indian government and how they respond. For now it seems like things will continue to at least be ok, but as I'm not privy to the specific feelings the Indian Punjabis have.
My personal solution (which I know would be deeply unpopular, but I do think will help with stability long term) is to enable greater economic collaboration across the border with both the Indian and Pakistan parts of Punjab. But I know that will have a lot of hurdles in the way

One thing to note here is that 5 eyes "corroboration" here means nothing. A hypothetical Khalistan will have more common with Pakistan than it will with India. It would be an ethno-linguistic-religious state, similar to Pakistan (Pakistan has 5 ethnicities but pretty much just Punjabis hold most of the power). And the illegal gun market is thriving in Pakistan, specially the northern regions where the AK47s are quite the heirlooms.

What I find interesting is that the UK also has a large Sikh population yet this issue has never really been raised to public consciousness, perhaps because Sikhs have never been politically significant force in the UK compared to other groups like those from Pakistan or Indians who were forced out of Uganda. They are not associated with political violence at all, indeed their most famous tendency is to have kitchens that serve free food (which was famously availed of by striking miniers in the miners strike). I was only really aware of this issue through the assassination of the Prime Minister Indra Ghandi in 1984 after she was interviewed by Peter Ustinov.
Sikhs here in Canada also serve free food to the community when there is a need. For example, when thousands of people were displaced from their homes due to wildfires here in BC this summer.
The Khalistan issue is mostly found in the UK, outside Canada.
Sikh's in Canada aren't associated with political violence either. This is probably the first time most Canadians have heard of this movement at all.
It sounds like most Canadians had never heard of it until this recent assassination. When Trudeau visited India I remember the main controversy being him dressing up in Indian garb namaste-ing all the time in a patronising way.
British Khalistanis climbed onto the walls of the Indian High Commission in London and tore down the High Commission’s Indian flag. Just yesterday, an Indian diplomat was heckled outside a gurudwara in Glasgow.
Majority of Sikhs living in Punjab migrated to India from Pakistan in 1947 because, after partition, Muslims started killing them, raping their women, and looting their properties. After establishing themselves in India, they made a Sikh majority state in Punjab by diving the Hindu majority and making a new state in 1966. Their political leaders started an armed struggle in the 1970s with India to establish a Sikh homeland then. They killed more than 30,000 innocent Hindus in Punjab by hijacking buses in rural areas or by bomb blasts in busy markets and asked Hindus to leave Punjab or be ready to die. In turn security agencies killed the same numbers of armed Khalistani Sikhs to establish peace in Punjab. This is a warning for Canada and its political leadership that Khalistani will be the same in Canada. The most unsafe city in Canada is now Surrey, the Khalistani epicenter, thanks to the Khalistan drug cartels.

But there is something more that you must know about Sikhs being in majority(57%) in Punjab, as this was not always the case-
In Indian Punjab, before partition, Hindus were in majority. Even in each and every district individually, Hindus were in Majority except for one district(Ludhiyana). Sikh population in the larger Pakistani Punjab was 20%, of which, almost all came to the Indian side. After partition, most Sikhs refugees concentrated in Punjab while Hindu refugees dispersed more to other north Indian states as well. Hindus took in all the refugees and became a minority.
But right now Sikh population in Punjab is only 48%. Because many lower cast Sikhs converted to Christianity
Thats not really the case. In east punjab prior to partition hindus and sikh each made up around 30% of the population, while muslims made up the plurality around 40%. The reason why old censuses say that the region was majority hindu was because of the fact that sikhs weren’t considered a separate religion by the british government, instead considered a sect of Hinduism. The main reason why sikhs now make up the majority of east punjab is because the muslim population was expelled, combined with the fact that a slight majority of those migrating from pakistan were sikh. The 20% figure you mentioned includes both Hindus and Sikhs, hence why hindus still make up 40% of east punjabs population today.

What they are though, is organised crime in both countries. Another faction of Khalistanis did claim Nijjar's death and there was another such death of a Khalistani leader a few days ago. Simple, the ones who carry out terrorist and criminal activities, make threats to others, carry out gangland killings, from Canada and promote seccionist ideas of carving out a Kalistan state out of India through violent undemocratic means even though Indian sikhs in democratic India do not want it and have never wanted it.
Some additional facts: A sikh state historically existed briefly in Pakistani Punjab, not India. The supporters of Kalistan are Canadian citizens and have no right to impose seccession on sikhs or other Indians in India who don't want it in democratic India. @@goldenmemes51 Sure but the lessened number of Sikhs in the Army is not a product of Sikhs but a product of Army Policy. The Army adopted a state-quota system in 1950, which attempted to diversify the army. As a result the number of placements in the army available to Sikhs (who are mainly concentrated in one state) was drastically lessened.

All Sikhs are not khalistani. Only a 2-4% of Sikhs endorse the idea of separate Khalistan and these resides outside of India.
In the Indian Punjab there are hardly a 1% of Sikhs who would want Khalistan.
My genuine question is if someone in political power in Canada was very pro new nation then wouldn't a question for them in a debate be "would you immigrate to said country if it's created?" Like where does your allegiance lie?
Why would the answer to that question necessarily have to be 'yes' and even if the answer was 'yes', what difference would it make?
@@pragueuprising560 Well, it would cast an unfavourable light on that politician, don't you think? That person is elected to build a stronger and better Canada. My tax dollars should not be spent advocating for international affairs. There are enough issues on home soil that need addressing.

I mean, what if the answer is no? I'm sure I could find a number of independance movements I'd support, a number I wouldn't, but little could sway me to emigrate.

Khalistan will never be a reality in India. If Canada provides refuge to these separatist, they should consider the possibility that these people will eventually build a Khalistan in Canada. This is a real possibility which Canadian s don't realize today. And Justinder Singh Turdue will bear the blame for this.
If I remember, the reason the Punjabis came to Canada at the time was because Chinese immigration was restricted and they had experience with lumber since being up in the mountains the geography was similar. So a lot of them came to BC to work in the timber industry.

@vlasov sikhs are primarily trade and agriculture folks, and no they have very little to nil experience with timber,plus punjab and a few less populated cities of it do border Himalayan foothills, but in no way or another does punjab or any "sikh region" resembles BC, for a lil bit of time some parts of Himalayan region was under the so called sikh empire, but Himalayas are almost free of sikhs with hindu,muslims and buddhists being majority religions, also if you are wondering who am i to tell, im a 16 yo boy from haryana state,south of punjab, which was a part of punjab state till 1966,and my mom and my 2nd home is from/in punjab
