    Janeway was rigidly inflexible with the prime directive whenever bending it (just slightly) would have enormously benefited her crew. But she was happy to completely through it out the window everytime she wanted to impose human morality on a random alien culture.

    • @BioGoji-zm5ph
      @BioGoji-zm5ph 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Or if Ferengi were involved. In her mind, reprimanding some Ferengi for interfering with an alien culture was more important than using a time-sensitive wormhole to get her crew back home. And let's not even get started on every missed opportunity she had whenever she interacted with Q, the god-like being who can send people across the galaxy with the snap of his fingers and back without causing them any harm in the process (as demonstrated in Q-Who). She never once asked him to send Voyager back home. All it would have taken was a small bit of her pride, and her crew could have been saved from years of suffering and death.

    • @jacksonheathen2092
      @jacksonheathen2092 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BioGoji-zm5ph Well said. Janeway was a good & likable character. But not the best captain.
      In fact she seemed to waffle back & forth about interfering with those two Ferengi in the episode "False Profits".
      First she tried to stop them, then she changed her mind a beamed them back down, then she changed her mind yet again and had Neelix impersonate a Ferengi.
      The Ferengi weren't federation members and it wasn't a federation world. I'm sure the Ferengi take advantage of less advanced cultures in the Alpha quadrant all the time too.

    I have an idea as to why the Vidiians may not have heard the initial self-destruct alert. If individual crewmen are utilizing the universal translators in their com-badges, rather than a ship-wide system, and the Vidiians were not in close proximity to a crewman they had not already killed, they may not have had the chance to hear the translated version of the alert if the badges on the dead crewmen were not bothering to translate the warning. This assumes that the badges are detecting that the crewman has been killed and thus "brick" themselves to deny assets to whomever killed the crewman. I think this would make sense, but I don't recall ever specifically seeing this kind of safety function on-screen.
    Alternatively, it is possible that the Vidiians are jamming communications to limit their victims' ability to coordinate a defense against them, and this is also screwing with the universal translator function of the badges (especially if the function requires communication with the ship's computer). If any jamming they may be doing is screwing with the internal communications system, then that also could interfere with them receiving the initial alert. In either of these cases, the Vidiian efforts to ease their attack would ironically end up being the petard they were hoisted with.
    It may also be possible that the energy weapons of the Vidiians are damaging and disabling the com-badges.

    I think it's perfectly fine for alarms to be on the bridge only. I wouldn't really want to know when I am going to die. Can you imagine being anxious knowing you are about to die because of a ship's self destruct? Just make it be instant and without prior knowledge. I am sure the situation there wouldn't have a possibility of using escape pods so why even make an announcement?

    • @forestwells5820
      @forestwells5820 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@timhendricks650 Don't tell Tyr from Andromeda that. He found the idea of automated defenses absurd (of course, this was while his own ship had been hacked and they were firing on him, but details). Though that does bring up a point about that. Any system can be hacked or used wrongly. Internal defenses might be too big a risk should an enemy gain control of it, and thus use it to take the ship that much easier.

    • @tba113
      @tba113 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@forestwells5820 That's a good point, especially with how centralized Starfleet ships' main computer systems seem to be. If the main computer is compromised, the defenders are severely limited in almost anything they want to do. All the more reason for Starfleet Security to at least try to show some hint of competence when pirates board their ships.
      Even so, setting up local force fields to bottle up and isolate hostiles seems like the sort of thing they could do to at least slow the attackers' progress, rather than letting them just run rampant.

      Sirstas Cavit had the other codes, when he was killed everything reverted to Janeway. And there was probably some regulation about giving self destruct codes to former Starfleet officers turned terrorist. Although I believe Torres wasn’t allowed to eject the warp core by herself in Season 1 but by Season 4 she could, so I don’t know why Janeway wouldn’t trust Chakotay by that point. I love your breakdowns, but this one seems to be a bit judgmental at times, and making a lot of comments on preconceived notions.
    First: While yes, Starfleet was still allowing families on their ships, Voyager had no families on it as her mission profile didn't allow it. Even Ensign Wildman herself didn't know she was pregnant until after they were stuck in the Delta Quadrant.
    Second: Ensign Wildman wasn't doing anything that was physically intensive, she was probably on light duty due to her pregnancy, she was serving on a military vessel where it would be expected that she keeps working if she can, and she probably was okay with continuing to work. Plenty of women work while being pregnant, they just take it easy.
    Third: From what I understand, the type of self-destruct that Janeway engaged was where, when the countdown reaches 0, the entire matter/anti-matter supply gets dumped into the reaction chamber, causing a sudden and large explosion. Thus, the Vidians wouldn't detect anything beforehand to warn them of the coming explosion.
    Forth: While I don't know for sure, it would make sense that the announcement would only be on the bridge. The purpose of the self-destruct is to keep the ship from falling into the wrong hands. Technically, Voyager was a military vessel and all of the crew knew the risks, if the Vidians heard the announcement, they may try to stop the self-destruct before it finished. Also, from a utilitarian point of, if the crew of Voyager hears the self-destruct alerts, they may stop fighting as hard in the face of impending death (sounds kind of heartless, but these are the kind if things real militaries would consider).
    Just some thoughts I had.

    • @MD2389
      @MD2389 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You also have to consider whether or not the universal translator would even translate the warning into the Vidian language. Sure the warning could have been broadcast throughout the ship, but would the Vidians have even understood what it meant?
      I know this is a leap of logic here, but it might explain why they didn't react to the warning. It would also explain why the Klingons in ST3 didn't react, because apparently only two of the crew understood English.

    @Lore, there's an old Star Trek Voyager online with the operator name "The Trek Cynic", who would say "That was a good Voyager episode, but why can't that happen to the REAL Voyager. :P
    Older Star Trek fans with a broad breadth of the web resources remember why Voyager was considered the worst Trek TV show at that point in time, even today with Discovery making its rounds and Enterprise looking better and better in retrospect, there are still real axes on Voyager.
    This episode was good and had real drama, but Voyager's magical engineering team repaired the entire ship in one episode, like it kept replenishing shuttles and resupplying itself . At least in Battlestargalactica, when they were lost in space, we saw actual shortages of food, water, and fuel being a problem, along with continual battle damage eventually killing a ship. Science fiction is not fun if it doesn't play by its own rules, which is why Voyager and later series after DS9 began to fade. It's not Canon or non-Canon, it's just logical universe.

      Ok, i wouldn't change a thing about the first episode it's perfectly fine, the SECOND episode however is where things would change! Just like in Tuvok's holodeck simulation the Marquis members of Starfleet do NOT get uniforms at first. I want the audience to be able to plainly see that this is not just one happy family. YOU GOTTA EARN THAT SHIT!

      Then I don't get rid of the Kazon. I fix them! First I drop the whole ultra sexist schtick, that wasn't entertaining anyone. Two, I focus on what makes them admirable. Within ONE generation they went from being slaves to being a major power in their sector of space. THAT'S AMAZING! They weren't street gangs like Rick Berman envisioned they were Native Americans WHO WON!!

      Four: I make the Vidians the scariest new race of aliens since the Weeping Angels! (before Doctor Who overdid them and ruined them) I would do some straight up David Cronenberg body horror SAW in space shit with them!!

    Yeah, don't do this again. I come here to hear your whiny voice tearing down star trek. I say this as positively as I can: Whine more. Also give us more halo and battlestar galactica, it's right up your alley.

      I'm tired and annoyed - Not to do with you. Let me rephrase my comment if you were able to see it. I'm going to be doing more BSG. 'Whiny' I don't find as helpful - but I'll take the feedback you like Voice Over with more criticism.

      Actually, I prefer honesty...if you like an episode, tell us why. If you don't, tell us why. Ask long as you have facts and examples to back up your presentation, rather than just "me feelz bad 'bout dis" kinda YT nonsense.
