      There is a good fanedit of SUPERMAN III by one DangerMouse called the "Decrapified Edition" (check fanedit.info/), that makes the movie more fluid and focuses on the characters instead of the jokes. All characters especially Lorelei and Gus are oddly improved. It's a must see!

      Oliver Harper I was curious and wanted to ask. I've seen your review of the Supergirl series, but I wondered if you were possibly going to review the Supergirl movie. Granted that is not a great film in comparison to the Superman films, but Helen Slater is the one true element that works for it.

      Here's what I think about Superman III
      1) Clark Kent is the BEST step-father to abused children and the BEST second chance boyfriend to abused divorcees. Superman is more human than the other previous 2 movies. I will credit Lester on that
      2) Richard Pryor should NEVER be casted in the movie in first place. He is the creep that ruin this whole movie. And I am not racist
      3) Lana Lang has been given bigger scenes allowing audience to understand and to pity her for marrying asshole Brad.
      4) the scene of Superman saving an unconscious Ricky lying in the cornfield was the Most Humane scene of the 3 Superman movies touching hearts of many
      5) the scene where Evil Superman battles Clark Kent was the Best Scene in the movie. 4 stars for the late Christopher Reeve acting so convincingly as 2 different characters facing each other in a showdown

      Oliver Harper love your reviews brother. I always thought that this story should’ve been scrapped and that the entire film should’ve focused on the evil Superman and the good Clark (who’s dressed as Superman as well. A good Superman). Throughout the picture they’re dying because they need to be joined again. Have scenes of Clark at the planet having serious issues where he collapses.
      That Clark has to somehow get the evil Superman back to the fortress of solitude because with the kryptonian tech, they can be joined as one, otherwise they’ll both die. Have the same stuff with the evil Superman destroying national monuments and whatnot and throughout the picture, Clark (good Superman) and evil supes get into a few battles, (utilizing their super powers such as heat vision, etc) The evil Superman is more the aggressor though, which gives Clark issues. Have one climactic battle at the fortress and then they’re joined. Kinda similar to the Star Trek episode “the enemy within”

    I saw this in the theater in 1983 in a crowded theater. We all enjoyed it at the time, people were clapping and cheering. It was a great viewing. Some of it was filmed in my neighborhood in Calgary Alberta Canada. I got to meet Christopher reeve in downtown calgary and I got his autograph.

      I love the scene when Richard Pryor secretly steals all the fractions of a cent from the company payroll and becomes rich.
      Then the head of the company is like ‘we’re never going to find whoever did this as they’re obviously a genius and way too clever for us’.
      Then he looks out of the window and sees Richard Pryor racing into car park in his brand new Ferrari 😂 ‘I think I know who may it be’

      I know that the Superman movies can deal with some pretty dark subject matter like nuclear war and mass murder, but it still does it in a cheery way, making it feel weird to know that rapists exist in that universe.

    I remember putting in superman 3 every morning when I was a kid. I remember feeling bad for waking up superman so early to act for me.. very young and not quite wise to how vcrs and tapes worked. when I told my mom, she suggested I write superman a letter telling him how much I like him.. maybe thank him for the hard work 😉. I did just that. it was hard since writing was kinda new for me, but it was sealed, stamped, and on its way to superman. about 4 weeks later I got a hand written letter back from chris reeve thanking me for the letter! he said to keep watching and I can be as super as I want to be! including a signed 8x10 of him in the costume. still have everything. blew my mind lol. and so so cool of chris reeve

    I like Superman III - I grew up with this film. I like the fact Smallville is explored and Lana Lang is in the film. Nowadays people concentrate on Luthor and Lois Lane, but tend to forget that Smallville and Lana Lang shaped Clark into the person he is now.

      That idea for Brainiac being a kryptonian computer only came in the mid-late nineties animated series version, but still I'd love to eventually see him in the new DCMU that started Man of Steel last summer, would you rather they use him as a league villain at some point or maybe in one of the Superman sequels? I'm just hoping they use some of the villains no one is familiar with, even perhaps eventually Doomsday. Dark Seid is an obvious choice for a league villain at some point though.

    I'm glad to have finally found a generous review of this film. I agree, while it's weak in several respects (such as the slapstick), I'll always give it credit for breaking from form and going in creative new directions.
    It's the only Superman movie of its generation which doesn't feature Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor as the villain, and it presents a very intriguing new conflict with the hero battling his own darker self, compellingly realized by Christopher Reeve, who makes Superman's degeneration genuinely disturbing. The decisive fight scene is visceral, brutal, and has always impressed me. The super-computer was menacing and ominous (if a bit cheesy), and the cyborg sequence always gave me the chills. It's certainly more fun watching Superman battling the machine's varied attacks than a mound of Kryptonite again!
    Yeah... I'd say if this movie had just taken itself a little more seriously it may be remembered with much greater respect.

      totally agree. as I kid I had the vhs off tv so I watched 3 the most and it's honestly my favorite because of that. while I agree lestors slapstick is atrocious and ruined the film I can look passed it for all the good the film has.
      real question is was Clark having a nervous breakdown in his mind to get rid of the red kryptonite version and we just got to see what was in his mind playing out or did he literally separate from the evil part and literally destroy it?

      +Joe England Very well said. I love this in the series and could watch it time and again, despite it's flaws. Oliver's retrospectives and reviews are reasonably balanced and well research and presented. This shines through in this one.

    • @nickwalker7850
      @nickwalker7850 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Joe England That's wher this film turns me off, though. Yes, it can be genuinely disturbing and yes they did explore some uniquely uncomfortable concepts for a superhero movie, but they overlook that at the end of a day its still supposed to be a SUPERHERO movie. It's fluff entertainment, intended to excite kids and leave them hopeful and more inspired than before, while also providing a basic story as to keep older auiences from getting bored. Instead, while we got some interesting ideas, its an unbalanced film. It can't decide to be dark, or childishly funny. It can't decide to be a fun energetic film or slow and boring. And it misses on all accounts.
      -It's not inspiring
      -It's not even mildly entertaining, and slapstick fails miserably
      -and it has material unsuitable for younger and older audiences.
      This film would get an 'F' if I were to grade it.

    • @JoeEnglandShow
      @JoeEnglandShow 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'm not sure superhero movies in general are necessarily meant to be "fluff." In fact, some of the very best superhero films have touched on very serious tones.
      Superman II got pretty dark at times, especially when a trucker assaulted Clark Kent without his powers. Heck, some of the superhero movies that excited and inspired me the most as a kid had profoundly moody moments. Tim Burton's Batman was practically gushing with gloom and gravitas. And how many superheroes are born out of tragedy? Batman's parents, Spider-Man's uncle, Superman's whole world... the original film's portrayal of Krypton's apocalypse was horrifying in its scope. The sight of hundreds of people falling in terror is striking, and Lois Lane suffocating in her car was one of the most frightening things I'd seen in movies for a long time.
      And when I watched Superman III when I was young I really appreciated the sense that it wasn't all fun and games. Lots of movies were like that "back in the day," even stuff that was meant for kids carried downright terrifying moments which we later went on to cherish for the impact they had, and still have. Just because something's "supposed" to be a superhero movie, doesn't mean it's "supposed" to be nothing but fluff, and if it's done correctly then viewers of all ages can benefit.
      Now, I'm not saying you're wrong to dislike this film. Far from it! You're right, the tone is unbalanced, the humor is irritating, the celebrity cameo is shoehorned in, the production values are cheap, and the whole thing is just kind of sloppy and patched together. It's easily one of the worst Superman movies, hands down.
      But, as a matter of taste, I appreciate one or two things they tried to do with it. Call it a missed opportunity, maybe. A BADLY missed opportunity, but, still... there was potential there. And, for my part, I'd say it comes closest to that potential in its darker moments.

    • @nickwalker7850
      @nickwalker7850 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ...................You have a fair point. Ever consider writing editorials? :)
      I guess there are supposed to be challenging materials in there as well. The rather graphic Krypton scene and the death of Uncle ben are crucial to the character's development and WHY we love our heroes so much. If we don't have our heroes face traumatic events, how do we draw the inspiration to overcome our real-life challenges, regardless of what scale they be? Yeah, you're entirely correct there. (but again, I think we both can agree that cyborg conversion scene was a little TOO challenging. :)
      But yeah, fair point. I guess sometimes I like to oversimplify favorited heroes too much.

    Talking negatively about the Clark/Lana relationship on the grounds that it was a standard relationship and did not rely on him being a superhero? As you say, I always thought that was supposed to be the point, that she was in love with Clark not Superman.
    Not to speak ill of the deceased, but the more I watch of Roger Ebert's reviews, I do feel that he (along with several other mainstream reviewers of the time) did have a habit of talking out of his bottom.

    In regards to Siskel and Ebert's criticism of Richard Prior: I'm glad Gus wasn't evil. He came across as a well meaning guy who got in over his head because of his idiot-savant abilities with computers. I like that Superman and Gus parted as friends at the end of the movie. Lets not downplay the fact that Superman had sex with the blond chick. He then came back with, hey that wasn't me that was some other guy. We know she took it up the butt and you enjoyed it Superman...

      +Clark Kent Dunno. I don't see it. There was a bumblier guy with a similar name who came through here back in 1978, and some of us thought he had moments of resemblance...but you're a guy with black hair and glasses who's kind of big. Seriously, there is no one who thinks that. Don't worry about it.

    Great review Oliver. I can understand Superman III holding a special place in your heart. I feel the same way about the first Superman movie I saw. The first one, Superman: The Movie. Christopher Reeve is my favorite actor to have played Clark Kent and Superman. I was really disappointed in Superman III. It was a HUGE mistake casting Richard Pryor in a Superman movie. The best scenes for me were with Lana Lang and Clark, and the junkyard battle with the "evil Superman".

    I love love love that scene with Richard Prior in the cleaning closet....it's one of the very best scenes of someone being drunk but very coherent and genuinely entertaining at the same time (and the goofy country music playing at the same time certainly made the scene as well.)
    Superman 3 definitely should not be discounted as a 'bad' movie!

    I have been watching a ton of your retrospectives over the past few days and I have to say I really enjoy every single one. I appreciate your enthusiasm and the time you take into making these things. I also really enjoy how you do the short reels at the beginning and ending of each review, you do a truly great job of making the movies look great in their own right. You really could have a career in trailer making.
    Just want to let you know that all your hard work is appreciated and hasnt gone to waste.
    good job

  • @OliverHarper
    @OliverHarper  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    good question Alan. Well i like to think it was all in his mind. But the script isn't smart enough to imply that so it is as straight forward as it is told in the story that Superman splits into two. It would've been cool to have one of the workers on the site looking from a distance and watching Superman fight nothing or talking to himself to imply he is fighting something in his mind.

  • @dbreiden83080

    Superman 3 is sadly one of those movies that has some nice parts to it but never really came together. They needed to put Reeve front and center where he belonged and casting/writing a menacing villain, one that is not a poor mans Lex Luthor. If they were going to cast Pryor why not let him get in there and really be a bad guy? He had no defined part. He's not really good or bad he is just there..

    Well ALL the Superman movies, of THIS SERIES, have an element of HUMOR, even 1 and 2 ( though I'm not sure I'd label them "comedy" exactly ). Oh, and WHEN did Pryor EVER play really "evil" guys?

    Things I can easily sit through:
    --Eye splinter scene in "Zombie"
    --That scene in "City of the Living Dead" where the woman vomits her intestines.
    --All of "Cannibal Holocaust"
    --All of "Cannibal Ferox"
    --Fetus eating scene in "Anthropophagus"
    --"A Serbian Film"
    Things that still creep me out:
    --Vera Webster turning into a cyborg.
    --The post-credits scene in "Masters of the Universe"

    I recognize the flaws in this movie, but it still remains one of the most fun superhero movies ever for me. It's dripping with character, from the stars right down to the people with one line of dialogue, and that makes it fun. Plus, Pryor is always hilarious, and the juxtaposition of his story and Superman is inherently funny.

    One thing that will be seen in criticisms of the Superman sequels, especially modern reviews, is that in quite a few scenes the wires are visible in take off and landing shots. Today those would be removed digitally, but back in the 70s and 80s they would have had to go frame by frame and paint them out of the master prints (which they did do for a few scenes in the first film). The other option, done with Superman III and Supergirl, was to cut prints that were made with a slightly softened focus. It didn't make the film exceptionally blurry, but it did obscure really fine lines like flight wires. But when they would go back and make DVDs and Blu-ray disks, they would use the original master and print with a clear picture. This your Blu-ray of Superman III shows the wire work (and optical matte lines) more than if you'd watched the film in the cinema in 1983.

    Same here, first Superman movie I watched, and for me, for the first 3, this one is the best. Oh and that scene at the end, damn, yeah, that scared me too as a child. Freakishly well done.

    Still my favorite Superman movie out of the series. It's silly yes, and at times jarring and unfunny. But it was still a fun movie that does something Man of Steel couldn't do. It made me care. Clark and Lana's relationship is what makes me come back to this movie, Evil/Bizarro Superman the junkyard fight, the Vera scene which gave me nightmares as a kid. Even the opening I enjoyed, it was different but a typical day in Metropolis in my eyes. Underappreciated gem.

    I love this movie, and you did a really fair review for it.
    Christopher Reeve probably did his best acting performance from all the franchise, not only as the evil Superman, but overall. Annette O'Toole was so sweet in Lana Lang and Ross Webster was ok.
    Richard Pryor was annoying and unfunny. The slapstick scenes were unfunny too. But, fortunately the good points outway the bad ones, just like you said.

    Reeves films I feel sort of went the gambit of gold, silver and even touched bronze age and even a touch of Brave Bold campiness. It was a thrill ride, like reading comics, we wanted to skip the real life parts and get to the action and had a few laughs along the way.

    Spot on review. As a kid I didn't mind all the slapstick but now I see it as overstuffed for a Superman movie. It's still nostalgic to me and evil superman is brilliant. Watched it when I was home sick a lot as a kid. The ABC Sunday Night movie airings with added scenes.

    yeah it was awesome hearing John Williams music again. Always gets an audience excited. Hans Zimmer is shitting himself about scoring Man of Steel, he should be. He can't top Williams. actually that was what I hoping for - review of temple of doom, theres so much controversy over that film in regards to child slavery , the incorrect portrait of indian culture, willie's whining ,the casting of short round and Steven Speilberg being totally regretful over this movie, yet in my opinion its the most fun Indy movie to watch and my favourite.
