Wow! This is great. I wish that somehow a tape exited of the NYCOpera production. I saw it in the 1970s with Ramey, Johanna Meier, Enrico di Giuseppe. Boito is not my favorite composer, Mefistofele is not my favorite opera, and Ramey & Meier weren’t my favorite singers. But it was the greatest performance I’ve ever seen, and I saw all the great names from the early-70s till today.
The NYCO multi-media Mefistofele was truly remarkable. A Corbett Foundation grant enabled the productions of the NYCO's Mefistofele and Hoffmann to tour the States. It arrived in Honolulu in October 1973. Norman Treigle cancelled and was replaced by Michael Devlin. The rest of the cast was Michele Molese (Faust), Nancy Shade (Margherita and Elena), David Hall (Wagner and Nereo), Kay Creed (Marta and Pantalis). Molese sang with a burnished tone that did not follow him into the French role of Hoffmann. I had always wished that the production would somehow be resurrected.
@@kiuchu2275 It was certainly was remarkable for its time. I saw it with Sam Ramey, and a couple of other basses. Would it work today? Probably not. It was pretty threadbare by the time I last saw it. And the lighting and special effects couldn’t be captured on video equipment of the period. The San Francisco-Met production that Ramey appeared in subsequently was an eye-opener, but it paled in comparison to the creativity of Capobianco’s production. There are a few snippets on TH-cam, but they’re such poor quality, you can barely see anything.
Magnifico Ramey! Insuperabile!
The you for posting and your hard work
Fabuleux. Merci!
This is the best live version of Mefistofele.
