Great content John. Your last point - being overweight - is undoubtedly the most important barrier to looking great in clothes. After years of unsuccessfully trying to lose excess weight, I hit long-term success when I quit sugar and sugary foods and ate nothing after my evening meal until lunchtime the following day. The surplus weight gradually came off and, sticking to that regime, it has stayed off. I don’t feel hungry in the mornings, my energy levels have gone up and, best of all, I can wear stylish slimmer fitting clothes with confidence and look way better than my overweight contemporaries.
Presently vacationing in Italy and I have to say these folks know how to dress - both men and women are very well dressed for the most part. The USA was once this way too but all we see now is hoodies and jeans. The phrase wear your Sunday best means nothing any longer. Sad. My Dad used to say - sloppy clothes, sloppy life. Dress for success! Great video!
Used to play in an annual soccer tournament with some Italian guys from nr Rimini. They could not understand UK and US obsession with owning many many cheap clothes. " Buy quality stuff. Look better " Simple but true!
Hello John. Thank you for this vlog. A little effort goes a long way. I am not the best dressed guy, but I always try to look "decent" when I go out. I do wear polo shirts a lot and if I wear a t-shirt, I do wear a casual shirt open...I hate seeing an adult man wearing sandals in public, it looks like he was cleaning his house and just jumped into his car to go to the store! I understand if you are in the beach, a beach resort, or at the pool...but in the store or shopping? Really?!!! I don't need to see anyone's toes or toenails. You don't have to spend a lot of money in clothes, owning some classic pieces would make it right. Thank you again for the vlog. Have a wonderful week. Have fun and stay safe. Cheers! ...Legend...
The old saying that 'clothes maketh the man' or that shoes are the first thing women notice about a man is so true. I work in IT as an engineer. Most of the other guys in the office turn up with no thought put into how they dress. It requires not a lot of thought (you get all the advice you need on this topic from John's channel) and effort to turn up looking as if you care about your appearance. People notice when you have made the effort. A shirt in itself, or a nice pair of shoes or boots, says a lot about what you think of yourself. Believe me, you will get complimented and you will feel good. For all the right reasons. Look after yourself physically and dress well and you will feel relaxed and confident in any environment. I've just turned 60 and I've never looked or felt better. When you develop that mindset, it stays with you 🙂
Great vid/great topic. I asked some coworkers the question "Are there more attractive men in the world, or more attractive women?". One lady made a great point, in answering that there are more attractive women: its okay with society when men don't try to look good. Simply looking "intentional" - like you simply *try* - can go miles. Skin care, height-weight proportional, and clothes that fit are a home run for men
Hi from Brisbane, Australia - Nice advice, and so very true in your observations. In these current days of sports sneakers, t-shirts, baggy jeans / shorts, baseball caps and flip-flops as universal attire - It's really not a difficult task to elevate one's style to be the best dressed man in the room or an event. Classic and timeless men's attire will trump the "athleisure" look each and every single time. Thank you John for your great work and great channel.
G’day mate. Nice to see a fellow Aussie here mate. I’m from Sydney New South Wales. :) To those of you from US or other countries, if you’re not aware, g’day mate is a friendly greeting us Aussies say to each other, like saying hello but in our own unique sort of slang lol. :)
Great suggestions as always-yes, the ladies notice. Going to be looking out for clothes as suggested to upgrade my wardrobe-overdue and a birthday present to my self. Was this past Wednesday, 59.
Headed to Del Frisco steakhouse tonight for sister’s birthday definitely a blazer night with some nice dress pants nice shoes shirt tucked in thanks for the motivation
I've totally agree on the weight loss thing. I'm 46, and two years ago, I was close to 400 lbs. I've lost 75lbs and 8 inches off my waist since then. I look so much better in my clothes, and the variety of clothing options has increased dramatically, and I can better taylor my individual style to my personality. It's gotten so good that, even though I'm still 325 lbs, I'm drawing the attention of beautiful women in their 20s who initially think I'm 30 - 35 years old. I can't wait to see what things will be like once I lose another 100.
Hi John, you are right ... The idea of wearing dress pants is a good idea. try those instead of jeans or chinos. . I just bought some wool dress slacks and wearing those will go over nicely with anything else. I also feel that wearing a sport jacket slims me down by covering my heavy midsection. until i solve it with diet and exercise. They almost look like suit jackets, without wearing a suit.
John, did "everyone" give up after that crazy pandemic year of 2020😮? It seems like too many men want to be casual forever. It could also be that "work from home" phenomenon also that men have now transferred back to the workplace. To me it seems like everyday is "casual" Fridays. NBA coaches have not even ditched the sweat suits yet😮. The days of Pat Riley are a sure distant past😢. Thanks again John for your terrific "fashion insight😊❤🎉💯".
I generally try to look/feel my best with whatever I decide to wear from gym clothes to suits. Thank you for the reminder! By the way, am loving your shirt. Where did you get it?
Ahh, I have the safari captains and they are fantastic, so versatile and I get compliments all the time with my James Bond look while women ogling me. 😂. Keep up the good work!!
I agree about tucking in your shirt. I don't agree that a polo should be tucked in. Life rule -- never tuck in a polo shirt. They aren't meant to be tucked in. I find that even though you will often be accused of "dressing up" when wearing a polo shirt, the reality is that a polo is a casual shirt just barely one notch above a t-shirt. Keep in untucked and casual. Tuck it in if you're going for those 90's Seinfeld vibes. A better option is to wear a long sleeve button down shirt, tuck that in, and then roll the sleeves up. It's a much better look and even shows off the arms better than a polo does, namely by highlighting the forearms which women love.
Agree to disagree on tucking in the polo shirt then. Maybe we’re talking about two different types of polo shirts. The old-school 90s polos, sure, leave untucked. But the nicer ones that are out currently can absolutely be tucked in.
At 66 years of age and we,well husband, needs some serious help .Built like a lean body builder and seems to live in his work site clothing yet needs a more grown up and mature outfits.
If there's a Suit Supply near you, take Hubby shopping. If not take him to a higher end department store where they will measure him for proper fitting clothes. I've always bought L or XL shirts. However, when you're properly measured, the fit is sooooo much better. Once I got myself measured, I bought a bunck of shirts from Paul Frederick. Well-built and definitely better than JC Penny or dare I say Walmart.
John, is the Diplomat that you have had for several years Burnt Copper or Arizona Adobe? And, did you size down for them or not? I have read to go with your actual gym shoe size for the Diplomat.
Many articles point to the fact the people today eat way more carbs than our bodies were designed for. Thus, obesiety has become the norm. Eating once a day (like dogs, cats, and all primates) puts you back into what our bodies expect.
Most men in 2024 can be seen in flip flops, cargo shorts, logo t-shirts and backwards baseball caps. If you put in 10 minutes of effort, you'll be dressed better that these "dude bros" you see every friggin where. Throw on a decent cologne while you're at it.
All these men’s style channels are just turning into advertising vehicles for the same handful of brands - Anson, Thursday Boots etc. It’s like, few minutes of the obligatory advice to wear chinos and white sneakers followed by lengthy sponsor spots
Totally get it, but you have to understand this is how we make a living. I don’t see it changing any time soon. Also realize that 90 seconds of a 9 minute video isn’t really that bad. It’s still a lot of value, and you can always just skip forward.
@@40OverFashion I appreciate that you guys gotta get paid. I think I only feel this way when it seems like the video is primarily in service of a sponsor, rather than the sponsor being worked into a video that could stand on its own without it. I also want to reiterate that this doesn’t apply solely to your channel; like I say, this seems to be an increasing trend on all similar types of channels
Back in the day, we used to refer to woven shirts (i.e. those with buttons down the front) as Woven shirts! Not “button down” or “button up”. May we please go back to “a woven shirt with a button down collar” to describe these? The other way sounds idiotic.
No man's wardrobe is complete without a pair of Chelsea boots. RM Williams is the daddy of them all, but they are NOT cheap. I also think we older gents can wear a classic Adidas trainer like a Gazelle or a Samba. They're very much a 70s/80s retro shoe, and as such we'd just be getting reacquainted with old friends.

John, here I am 52 years young and I landed my first modeling gig a few days ago. You and this channel is one of the reasons why.
That is awesome! Congratulations!!
Went to a party with blue chino’s white polo shirt and loafers and was by far the best dressed guy there. Felt great. Talked w many women lol
Good man!
The bar is so low that it doesn't require much to stand out. And either formal or informal, the James Bond style works.
Absolutely!
Facts
In USA wearing a Polo shirt, chinos and loafers are the equivalent to wearing tailcoat in England 🤣
@@cms3000 You even get to see people wearing pajama and sandals at the stores.
This. We live in a society where people talk about buying a "collared shirt" for when they have to "dress up."
Love the shirt tuck in look. Gives a better body shape appearance and makes me feel a cut above the average guy in the room. Thanks for the video.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video! Thanks for knocking it out of the park…again!
Glad you enjoyed it!
At 71 been doing exactly as you suggest; often complimented. Got compliments on my suede Chelsea boots twice this week. Thx!
Eso es todo viejón 👏🏻
Great job! Love it!
Tucking in your shirt elevates your look every time.
Or makes you look like a Poindexter. It really depends. Sometimes it looks better untucked in very casual ensembles
Yep! Tucking in your shirt is a free upgrade.
