    My old hangout! Did support work at Blanding and Green River. I supported the first stage drop off documentary photos for the two programs. One site was Dead Horse Canyon. I often was in the area to perform two way radio maintenance on the site support vehicles which also included the Snow Cats kept there for mountain top access during winter months. Thanks guys for the tour! Not much left anymore.

    I used to do work out there, surveying for well pads, pipelines, and roads. I worked on the other end at WSMR as well. Nice to see the place again.

    Very interesting to run conduits on the surface. Seems more vulnerable, but easier to maintain, I suppose. Thank you for the tour.

      This was constructed for testing only so the cableways had to be accessible for easy cable upgrades. Unlike a hardened missile site where everything is underground. Still very interesting.

    A bit north of the Moab airport there was a radar tracking station just off the highway and up a hill. It was associated with Green River/White Sands as well. That was maintained well into the 80's. I haven't been back to Moab in a couple years, but I seem to recall that the tracking station was removed.
    Had a family member who worked at White Sands, and I asked about all this. He told me to mentally draw a straight line between Green River and White Sands and then calculate the risk if a missile dropped out of the sky early. Yep, VERY unlikely that they would hit any populated areas. That site is still Army and could be reused if necessary.
    The rocket sled test center over by Hurricane is interesting too, but that is owned by a defense contractor and I would not recommend going there without permission.

      @@leerollins1107 I graduated HS in Hurricane, so used to go up on the mesa hunting. It's a whole other thing today though - lots more roads and people compared with when I was a young man. Still beautiful though. If you look at the side of the mesa you can see some discoloration on the cliffs. That is from the water barrier they used to stop the sleds.

    My memory of Green River from many years ago is when I was traveling through the area around midnight going from Colorado to California. At a nearby podunk town I was pulled over for a supposed traffic infraction. The cop took me to the town judge who fined me 20 dollars at his home. All probably because of out-of-state plates. Yes, the cop woke up the judge. The funny thing was that they didn't notice that my registration had expired and I was going to Cal to renew it.

    • @wheatlandsoul

    • @howardsmith9342
      @howardsmith9342 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are no nearby podunk towns, unless you mean Thompson Springs. There's nothing between Green River and Grand Junction, or at least the state line. TS is a tiny, almost ghost town about 20 minutes east of GR on I-70.

    So did they have to alert other governments of the test launches if into the upper atmosphere? I remember passing through a Green River in Wyoming, near Rock Springs, it seemed like the desert.
