I am American and my boyfriend lives in Accra, Ghana and speaks Ewe at home and English otherwise. He understands and speaks about six languages, including Twi and Ga. I want to impress him with some new words and phrases, so thank you for this resource as trying to find much information, especially translation of Ewe to English and vice-versa is difficult. Ewe is a very beautiful, expressive language and I have also learned it is tonal. I wish to learn as much as I can! Thanks!
Jazzy1Luv - I’m here for the same reason. My ancestry/ DNA profile traces back to Ghana. And my boyfriend is from Togo. Although I’ve been able to learn French. I really want to learn Ewe. I know a few phrases, but only a few. And as you mentioned, there are very few online resources available that help learn the language. With the few words and phrases that I know in Ewe, my primary focus now it to “perfect” my tone. If you’re still learning, I would love to find out what other resources you’ve used in helping you learn.
My family just celebrated our 20 year family reunion, we had DNA tests on our oldest living family member and to our surprise........we're descendants of the Ewe & Mossi tribes from Ghana. Our ancestors were bought to North Carolina from Ghana.........powerful stuffI, I will continue to research.
Yes, we realized this problem and are very sorry for the mistake! We will need to re-post the video at some point to fix the problem. In the meantime, I hope people see your message and learn from it!!
I loved the video BTW!!! Thanks for posting!! I am a linguist originally born in Togo with Ghanian parents. I plan on doing a lot of research on the language of Ewe next summer. Just wanted to see what is out there so I can get an idea of how to go about conducting my research. I hope you had a lot of fun while you were in Ghana!!! Thanks again for posting!!
I'm glad this video was useful to you! We did notice that the Thursday and Saturday are backwards. And we had some trouble when trying to detail between labor as in laborer vs. a woman in labor. But that just means that your post is very useful and I hope future users see it! Hopefully some day we can expand upon the video and also fix those mistakes!
Thank you! thank you! thank you! there are not a lot of recources out there for learning ewe. Do you know how I can get any audio resources of ewe English translation ?
I'm just wondering why you would doing lessons in Ewe while using an Akan Music in the background. I thought there are very many meaningful Ewe songs available to use. Meanwhile, what is the significance of the music in the background to this wonderful program?
that's funny awo in aot of other African languages means yes, pulaar (Fulani) malinke, dioula, soussou, Amharic etc. id like to learn Ewe, great deep culture!
The boy has it backwards!! Thursday is Yaoda and Saturday is memleda. The color orange and yellow are both called antsididi. Akutu as the boy calls it is what the actual fruit is called. When you say labor, depending on whether you're saying labor as is a loborer or labor as in a woman in labor, the words are different. Labor as in a woman delivering is ekulele. Labor as is a laborer is apadoworla. Of course depending on where you're from, the words are very different. Ewe is wonderful!!!
