They did it without great aero though. Their cars were not as efficient as the cars Adrian built. Eventually that bit them in the ass.
I think though that he learned a lesson about engines which is why he’s left RBR/Ford for a Honda project. The engines scared him away.

@@f.kieranfinney457 I don't know why this drivel is constantly repeated. Merc in the mid to late 2010's had arguably on par aero as RB. '14, '15, '16 we can chalk it up as being mainly about the engine however they pioneered several suspension innovations in that time frame. They were the most innovative team and their in-season development was unparralled.

It makes sense to me. Didn't Newey get the same sort of stick when he went to Red Bull, a mere drinks company? Aston Martin might be well heeled, but they're still an underdog team in terms of results. And they're a young team. So I'd think that Newey probably sees it as a fresh challenge. If he went to Merc, or Ferrari, or McLaren, he probably wouldn't have the same type of input.

Adrian newey didn't design that much of the actual car and floor or on the RB18/19 and now 20. Its actually Wache who is the teamlead not Newey.
Fun part is that RB was having a problem with the locking of the suspension. Newey has spent most of his research time on the suspension. In fact he was one of the only people to work on the suspension in Red Bull so that he could prevent the porpoising and other issues that most teams had at the beginning of this new era. That area he worked on seems to be exactly the problem they are having right now... suspension locking over the curbs!

Hi, Peter. I wonder whether everybody is getting too obsessed with where Adrian Newry does or doesn't go. I think he is the sort of man that needs a challenge, rather than a team that is already close to being top drawer. It's not just a case of turning up and creating a championship winning car in one season, is it? As you rightly say, he can only do that if he has complete control of design, and that could take a few years anyway. I can't see any one of the top teams giving him that much leeway when they are already knocking on the door without him.

I feel it's a shame Adrian went to AM. To me AM appear to not be a serious team but more of a hobby for Lawrence Stroll and to keep Lance in F1. I mean if they were truly serious in their attempt they would have sacked Lance long time ago, period. As long as Lance is not changing his driving or perform way better I would never take AM serious. Sure pay drivers exist and all that but never in a top team. And with "never" I mean not the same way it works in the lower tier teams. All drivers have sponsors tied to them which makes everyone "pay" for their seat.
Besides me beinga Ferrari fan but I would really have liked Adrian Newey go to Ferrari. If I assume Adrian is on his last days ending in Ferrari would have suited him especially in terms of legacy having Ferrari on his merit list.

Also the in-season progress Merc have made this year after finally dropping the fundamentally flawed concept of 2022-23 shows they still have tremendous engineering talent to take a fresh to them concept, make consistent positive progress, and find themselves with a legitimate race winning capable car.

Are you suggesting that Maclaren don’t have boat loads of money? So why is it any different is Newey chose Maclaren? This is F1, an obscene amount of money for a par for the course. I think it’s quite clear that Aston is likely Newey’s pick as they will give him free rein to do what he wants. Genuinely interested from someone that is employed in F1 on why Adrian Newey would only work for a UK based team because he wants to live in England?
Surely he can live wherever he wants (on his new boat if necessary) and still perform his role irrespective of where the factory or his Direct Reports are based?

  • @IanHobday

Lawrence Stroll's #1 shopping list item should be a new driver to replace his son. The team will never, ever be able to win a championship without at least a mostly competent driver in the #2 car. AMR doesn't deserve someone like Newey when they still have a nepo-driver in one of their cars.

That's a shame. I thought Dorilton might give him an equity stake in Williams in lieu of salary to free up some cash to get them back up the pointy end. They have a better driver line up than Aston next year.

I thought all the speculation Newey going to Ferrari-- from Will Buxton no less, seemed misplaced. Newey doesn't want to live in Ferrari.
Newey said he always wished he had worked with Lewis or Alonso. Now he has a chance to work with one of them.
Aston has all the right ingredients. World class facility, Honda partnership, unlimited budget. Their issue is their updates always go in the wrong direction and they need to understand their aero better. Adrian could be the final ingredient that makes them champions. Once Alonso retires, everyone will be fighting for that seat.

Very difficult to predict what teams will be at the frontend in 2026. Didn't we all expect the fight between Hamilton and Verstappen to continue in 2022? At the same time, who would have thought (not just hope) that we would have 7 different F1 winners by the summer break? Sure, Newey can design a great car, but there are no guarantees about the engine. Maybe AM will be in the same state as Red Bull in 2014, a great efficient car, but an engine that is not so good as the others.

That gives Adrian a year to work with Alonso, which was also a bucket list thing for him (as well as Hamilton).

but the execution terrible, creating a 2 tier society, of team members, where the majority gets screwed down, whilst a few a top get to be paid whatever,
it makes zero sense, and ppl switched on to this.
before you say, but the racing is close, well think how close 2021 was, the effects of the cost cap were minimal, it was the stable regs that make racing close, not cost cap.

'Get ready for Lance Stroll to start winning races' - is Stroll a better driver than Perez? Whilst - in the right hands - Newey's cars can dominate championships, on current evidence Stroll has neither the skill nor the temperament to mount a serious challenge.
Casting aspersions on Newey's motivations also seems quite off-colour, as does pegging Andy Cowell ahead of Honda's contribution in the current engine supply rankings. After playing catch-up in their insanely optimistic entry to F1, with rules that mitigated heavily against their success, Honda have shown their pedigree in producing formidable power units that are the equal of anything else on the grid.
Much more of this sniping and I think I'll be swapping subscriptions away from PW.
