  • Recently, Smart City has become one of the most emerging concepts in city planning. Lessons from highly developed pioneers like Dubai, Singapore and Copenhagen are useful for developing cities in other regions such as Asia. This video introduces our key concepts and vision of a smart city model for a fast developing city in Asia, as visualized by CGGAKA. It emphasizes the needed strong integration and interaction between advanced Cyber/Virtual systems and the Physical/Real environments. It highlights diverse Third Places as social and telework places in a post-pandemic world. And it also celebrates local natural and cultural elements, and emphasizes on smart infrastructure designs as part of smart city concepts.
    1. Concept
    Nature-Culture-Cyber as Keys
Many smart city projects around the world primarily focus on Advanced Technology. However, to establish an attractive and sustainable smart city, it is important to thoroughly consider 3 key dimensions: Nature, Culture, and Cyber.
A Compact Smart City featuring Cyber-supported Third Places
Traditionally, our daily activities go around 3 basic important places: First Place (Home), Second Place (Workplace or School), and then various Third Places such as plazas, parks, cafes, clubs, public libraries, temples, churches or markets, where we exercise, study, relax, hang out and socialize. However, the Covid-19 has shaken our world, locked down cities and kicked many activities onto Cyber world, including telework (work from home, café, or even a vacation place), e-learning and online entertainment. Thus, our urban way of life has changed drastically, and Smart City has become more present in our “New Normal”.
In our post-pandemic smart city concepts, all First, Second, and Third Places should ideally be located within a compact city, bikable and walkable, with an addition of new smart mobility modes such as on-demand buses, autonomous BRT, hover boards, scooters, etc. When people look for a new place to live, considerations on Third Places must become more important than before.
A smart city where the Physical and the Cyber World are well integrated and interacted
We envision a smart city where the physical and cyber world are well integrated and interacted, so that residents can enjoy “the best of both worlds” and maximize their living experience. The physical environments offer diverse Third Places and natural and cultural elements, while the cyber world features advanced cyber infrastructure system with an Open Data Platform for planning, management and operation of urban activities.
    2. Urban design
We propose urban design solutions relevant to Asian contexts such as flat river delta, the mixed use culture, seasonal floods, heats of the tropical climate, and so on. The masterplan highlights 3 intersecting axes: Culture, Nature, and Business. It also features 5 smartly designed infrastructures as explained below. The masterplan featuring a Cyber Center, Startup Zone, Makerspace Zone, an Expo, and other urban functional areas. A park system offers great pedestrian, cycling and outdoor activity environments. Widened canals and a retention lake help prevent seasonal floods and reverse the heat island effect. Startup area features pedestrian zones, a tech flea market in the middle and a cafe street on a side, and is surrounded by MICE (Meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) functions.
    3. Infrastructure
Five smartly designed infrastructures are featured as part of our Smart City concepts. “Smart” can broadly understood as “efficient” way of resources utilization.
    • Gateway Hill: A multifunctional hill built by recycled construction debris and excavated earth, covered with grass lawn and shady trees.
    • Lotus Ring: A pedestrian deck that offers shaded resting and meeting points, and creates an iconic structure featuring lotus - the flower of local pride.
    • Amphitheater Square: A large scale, multi-purpose square for big events and shows, a gorgeous amphitheater to watch concert, movie, with green space, flea market, cafe, etc.
    • Double Decker Bridge: A barrier-free bridge that provides a vibrant pedestrian and cycling zone. The upper layer serves as shelter for the lower one.
    • Retention Lake: A lake that stores excessive rainwater from nearby river or canals during heavy rains. During dry times, the middle-level trails can be utilized for jogging, cycling, etc. The lake also provides cooling effects and serves as a scenic spot.
