Let me explain you why: México, nicaragua, colombia all they have made or have projects in which they have ports in the atlantic and have the possibility to manage their cargo by rail,road to the pacific. But guess what? all of those options are more expensive than driving a vessel through the panama canal. So they can consider those options as a complement to the durty of the panama canal. We also in panama are trying to built not one,because we already have one rail road that comes from colon ports to the balboa port in the pacific end. We have in project built 5 different railroads in the entire country to complement the canal efficiency.
Here is the second point: the isthmus of panama gave us the advantage to be geographic strategical for the global trade in america. Now this gave us, also problems, we don't have a military force, we don't need it, we are a small country in central america that does not have enemies. We are a country of provide service and trade with all nations around the world. Well the reason is, because is in a treaty and because USA it already, benedict it self from it. The USA had the panama canal for 100 years and 99% of all those years was only for the USA. Another thing important is, if the canal was not run neutral, like we are running it, any other enemy of the USA would attempt to destroy it, or interfire to stop its traffic. And in any of those cases, the panama populations would be in risk.
