Keeping weight on a “hard-keeping” horse can be a challenge. A common immediate response to horse weight gain is increasing the feed intake or switching to a higher calorie feed. However, the first step you should take when looking for ways to help your hard-keeper horse gain weight is to determine why they’re not maintaining an appropriate body condition. They may not be receiving adequate levels of daily forage and feed or there might be a bigger underlying issue preventing them from keeping weight.
Join Dr. Katie Young, PhD Equine Nutritionist at Purina Animal Nutrition to explore reasons why a horse may have a hard time maintaining body condition, including possible medical issues and calorie evaluation.
