  • NOTE: The first couple of minutes of the episode are cut off.
    There's a surprise appearance by someone Groucho wasn't expecting or he probably wouldn't have said some of the things he did. . .
    And I still miss the duck.
    COUPLE #1: Lena Marciano, mother of Rocky Marciano / Dr. James Brougher, 90 year old Baptist minister who gets off quite a few very funny jokes. A solider from the audience replaces Dr. Brougher in the quiz.

    For those wondering, Dr. Brougher passed away in 1967, aged 97. His father was born in 1826, but passed away at a relatively young age of 68. Dr. Brougher had four children, all lived to be at least 77. The youngest two lived to be 96 (Corinna, d.1994) and 101 (James Jr., d.2003).

      Did you hear the one about the centenerian who made it to heaven and upon entering the celestial city stood there in awe and utter amazement at the wonder and the beauty of it all. St. Peter approached him and says, "Pretty impressive isn't it? "I'll say!" says the old man. "And to think that I could have been here 20 years earlier if my wife hadn't put me on that organic food diet."

    I remember seeing this episode when I was about 11 years old (1960?) If this old minister were my grandfather I would be so proud of the way he held his own with Groucho for 20 minutes. the joke he starts at 9:00 is told with the classic style of an old pro. Thanks to Groucho for letting him take the show for a few moments. As funny as Groucho is, he's always a class act.

    Amazingly, I just found this out on a Google search -- that Groucho Marx died on August 19, 1977, just one day before my mother died. I was only seven and don't know if I had heard of Groucho yet at that time. I certainly didn't hear about his death then, but I had heard Elvis Presley died on August 16 because everyone was talking about it. Little did I know what was coming next on August 20. She was a domestic abuse victim. Anyway, Groucho was the best, very quick witted. You have to be born with that knack for humor, and he was.

      Keep in mind Chico was a caricature of the italian immigrant. It was soften later to be a vague european. There were plenty of stereotypes of Germans, Japanese, French (Think Mickey Rooney in "Breakfast at Tiffany's")

    • @grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476
      @grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Chico's character never stopped being Italian. I'm not sure where you would get that from, except from the fact that he became pretty lax about the accent he put on as he got older. But he never stopped playing an Italian.

    • @Lukecash2
      @Lukecash2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think you are correct, it was more of an age thing. But in my defense, in Duck Soup he was Sylvanian, not Italian.
      It just seemed to me that Chico was incorporating more of an "every-immigrant" persona, picking up eastern european, even a bit of gypsy mannerism, depending on what the role called for.
      From what I read, Chico's Italian and stereotyping was more pronounced on stage when they were fine tuning their act.
      I'm currently reading "Life with Groucho" written by Arthur Marx, with notations by Groucho. It's a fascinating read.
      Thank you for being a fellow Marxist, and finding these great clips. Also a big fan of Burns and Allen!

    • @stanochocki8984
      @stanochocki8984 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You are so correct, Sir. Chico it was said, would actively look for these 'immigrant mannerisms', as he was out and about--and would even frequent places where the most recent arrivals would congregate in order to sharpen his own personal spin on the blended character he was creating. For he felt that ALL, immigrants--regardless of origin, share some common traits.
