2 years late reply, but it's just a regular racing mode. Though it seems that they made a rule of not using items here. Yea you should try CTR:NF if you haven't! What I like about it over MK is that you have a more solid slide boost mechanics, and that's largely all you need to get ahead of everyone in the race and get through like 90% of track shortcuts. It's such a big deal of a skill that if you don't know how to keep your slideboost and utilize all the shortcuts, you 100% will be left in the dust by those who can. No magic item nor luck can save you. I know this cuz I've been on both ends - being left behind cuz I didn't know how to slideboost and leaving my opponents behind (or even waiting for them/nerfing myself since they asked for mercy haha) cuz they dunno how to slideboost. You could say that CTR:NF is more brutal than MK, so it may not be children/noob-friendly. But otherwise, that's where CTR:NF shines - your win depends a lot on your mechanical skill. If you like some challenge, do try it! Oh, bonus! The stats aren't locked to the character nor kart parts. So you're free to customize your look while you choose your kart type (Balanced / Turn / Speed / Acceleration) separately.
