Once an original generation Italian woman gave me her tomato seed varieties glued by their gell on labeled paper bag rectangles. I have done the same for near 40 years.
@jerryclark5725 My grandfather in Canada had an awesome large vegetable garden in his backyard. He would do almost the same thing. I don't know how the breakfast cereal "muffits" aka shredded wheat come these days, but back then, the layers of the muffets were separated by a thin piece of card the length and width of the cereal box. He used those and would save his seeds stuck to those, then write the name, variety and year on the card.
What I have learned is that the seeds are actually doing a process while sitting there, dry, and to be patient with my seeds. It’s crazy, because I grew several squash plants and I was super surprised that some came up so quickly, while others took their time, and I am always so surprised when a few weeks later I get a little plant, while the others are already quite large.
I find silver maple keys germinate in my eaves trough quite readily. :-) Interesting about the trillium. The squirrels don't need to watch this video, they're already pros at planting walnuts and acorns. Anyone want a tree, just drop by.
I found this by accident, but it works really well for many species that produce small fruits. Leave them to dry a bit so they turn into a raisin, where they're still kindof squishy (not rock-hard dried), and you can just squeeze the seed out. Most of the time, the seed comes out very clean, the goo has partially dried, but since the seed is enclosed in this raisin-like fruit, it doesn't dry out. They seem to be able to sit like this a good while - I'd left some Polygonatum seed in a jacket pocket after a friend gave me some off her plant. It was well over a month later, possibly two, so they were almost too dry - or so I thought. I sowed them anyway, and had an excellent germination rate. So now I don't worry about cleaning pulpy seeds right away, they can sit in their fruit a good while.
Wow, I pull up so many sugar maple seedling every year cause they germinate easily in our yard. We have soooo many maple trees cause of this, part of our yard looks like a forest now, it even killed off a patch of grass cause it's all shade now haha. The red maple doesn't give us as many seedlings. I always feel bad pulling them up and now I'll feel even worse knowing how hard it is to get them to germinate. Our honey locust also gives sooooooo many seedlings every year. I must pull uo over 100 seedlings. We let too many of those grow too
I sometimes spray with peroxide if i am germinating in paper towels and it looks like mould might be a problem or they are germinating too sliw and may get mouldy.
leocospemum ie pincushions need to be scarified by soaking in hydrogn peroxcide and protea spp we germinated iy between hessian bag ayers.. just be careful not to break root hen removing.......fynbos smokee is also used to scarify
I just planted my first trees from seeds while I was looking for if the float test works or not and now I’ve subscribed and look forward to learning more
Citrus seeds should not dry out Eat the fruit plant the seed. I think I peeled the seeds first. Someone gave me 40 loquats from his tree. Two seeds in each one. They all sprouted.
@@Cookies-i2f thanks i never would have thought to use google, not like there are a whole lot of scam seed sellers online. Thanks for taking the time to give such a helpful reply

I fermented one batch of tomato seeds for one day, and another batch of the same kind for 12 hours and both batches cleaned very easily.
Far by the best detailed summary of the subject. We say experience is the key, but this detailed scientific approach is also necessary. Thank you!
