A cousin of mine is navigating schizophrenia and she had some rough years (hospitalized for 2-3 months at a time) but is now able to live independently. She also found a job. Social services had been useless in her job search, they consistently sent her to job interviews that were totally unsuitable. For example, a receptionist in a fast-paced business environment that required multi-tasking (phones, greeting people, computer work, etc.) She would shutdown/disconnect and be unable to function and get fired. Her new job is being an assistant to older people, which she really enjoys. Finding the right medication, and adhering to the treatment plan, was been another challenge. She has a minimum of medication now. How family has responded (or not) to the situation is a whole other story. Some still don't accept the diagnosis and feel she has behavioral issues, is 'lazy' and not motivated' or is 'just fine'. Unlike the stereotype of all schizophrenics being violent, she is quiet and has never been harmful to herself or others. My cousin is funny, insightful and a nice person. She has friends and enjoys going places. To know and accept her as she is, has deepened our connection.
@@ashleyriblet2326 My family is cross-cultural, some are in the US and others are in France. My cousin lives in Paris. Overall the French healthcare system has been good with ongoing medical care and when she needs hospitalization. As I wrote in my other posting, social services hasn't been as good at finding work and integrating in daily life. She wants to work and likes being around people. The assistant job to work with the elderly is still working out and she has her own apartment.
My nephew was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. He had not been in treatment for several years. He died of a self inflicted gunshot wound in 2021.😢
I was diagnosed four years ago as having schizoaffective disorder after being examined by a psychiatrist and a psychologist. I have had the illness since about age 12, with many related disorders. Schizoaffective is not always a psychosis; I have always been able to work at professions, attend college, drive and do many other needed tasks. But the effects have severely hampered me. I am often unable to read other people's intentions and social cues. I have long found my inner world more exciting and satisfactory than the real world. I have often been a fountain of creativity, writing, editing and organizing for a living, but also on most of my off time (by choice, not workload). I sometimes had "magical thinking" beliefs that I could influence far away events in which I had no personal involvement. On the magical thinking, and the work immersion, I have made great progress in the last dozen years. (Of course, the irony is that these days everyone's a writer, editor and content creator around the clock!)
My mom has schizophrenia and there's a chance I inherited it. I'm kind of scared. Since I'm still pretty young, I'm just waiting for it to get worse so I can know if I actually have it or not. Idk, my psychologist is making me have paranoia, lol. I used to feel like people could read my mind when I was little. It was frustrating but eventually I just decided to ignore it and continue thinking of whatever. And then it disappeared. I also was scared of death and infinity-of-nothing. I would cry a lot because of it, it changed my view of the world completely. I don't really care for it anymore though. I really hope I don't have it, not only because of it itself, but the stigma around it. I don't want people to think I'm crazy or something.
I wish my mom would've held on a little longer. She also had schizoaffective; I've spent the years and tears curious about what she was experiencing. She had no memory from her psychosis episodes (lucky! Lol) so that's not much help. Wish I had understood her illness more. I would've spent more one-on-one time with her, but I was young, frightened, overwhelmed being her caretaker, and it felt like she was a stranger sometimes. It's was heartbreaking and honestly awkward at times. Thanks for sharing!
I’ve just been diagnosed with schizophrenia last may 2022 ,I feel a huge relief as I thought I was beyond help , how you have described being alright round people is exactly how I am , I can’t live independently as my mind goes to a level of craziness, my grandchildren live with me now and it’s given me a reason for living , thank you for this clip , it does prove we aren’t alone ( slight pun ) lol
The world needs more education on mental illness. People hear schizophrenia and they think the worst. Also, our mental hospitals are so incredibly cold. I know their purpose is to just get them stable... My son (he'll be 18 this Sat) was diagnosed at 17 with bipolar schizoafffective disorder 5 Mos ago. I'm trying to learn as much as I can to help him. Your videos help- thank you! People ask me if I believe him when he tells me he sees and hears people. Yes. Yes I do. He's finally on a good med regimen but he's soo anxious that he will see/hear things again 😢
Hey yes he probably does see and hear things I have. The first time it happened I stayed all night in the bathroom having a conversation with who I thought were angels. I had no idea I had schizophrenia.
@@donnabolt5847 no mostly I stay at home. I know my wife and daughters love me. Mostly I focus on not getting stressed out about anything no drama whatsoever. It brings on episodes.
For me the start was simply noticing the most random and seemingly inconsequential things, then putting them together. At that point I would have never guessed this is a psychotic symptom, because it was so harmless and I thought psychotic symptoms were more obvious than that. Then people started commenting on weird things about me, like my flat affect and the way I walked, etc, which made me paranoid. They’d ask, “are you ok?” all the time, which was weird because I felt amazing, like I was filled with electricity.
@@Brujo2016 I’ll just make up an example. I would notice 2 orange vehicles drove past me at 3:00, 3x2 is 6, that meant I needed to be careful of people who might betray me. That’s a pretty simple example, but others were more complex and had to do with other random things that happened per day. These thoughts would happen within a few seconds.
I'm similar, i have schizophrenia, it started as depression at 13 then at 15 I started to lose motivation and interest in things and not wanting to talk, so bad I dropped out of school at 15 but it felt very different to the depression
@2024rush paranoia, some weird beliefs, I started noticing people were reading my mind but I still don't believe that's the illness, doing strange things but I think the hallucinations began in the following 2 years and I had my first episode in 2014 because I didn't tell anyone what was going on

an old friend from high school has schizophrenia and when he talks to any of us he was close to it will eventually trigger an episode that always has led to him breaking from reality in a big way. it was step by step over some years we all learned how it is with him and that it is always best to not communicate with him. he has been stable, medicated and able to cope before when it has happened with a just few phone calls so it's for the best especially for him.
@@julianadamico4702 yeah thats part of it. once we had found out he was trying to get on the same meds as another close friend, whom is not schizophrenic or anything close. it was only they had one med in common and had been getting in contact again so we all decided it best to stay out of contact.

It constantly feels like something isn’t connected. All my parts have power but nothing is working together, so you just sorta go with the flow and feel things as they get triggered. When I did “feel” it came about when two odd parts connected and created some type of irrational fear or excitement. Like seeing a crack in the sidewalk and thinking an ice cube in my cup cracked the same way so that meant my life was going to crack apart/open in the same way and I had to quickly piece together the puzzle that was how to avert this crisis.
My nephew recently presented with psychosis and visual and auditory hallucinations he is 19 and I will be caring for him I’m doing research to better understand his diagnosis so that I can be the best support system for him if you have any tips for caregivers and family members on how to address auditory and visual hallucinations that would be amazing! Just got diagnosed last week, and I am still trying to get over the stigma of "Im too high functioning to have schizoaffective." Ive had depression since 10, bipolar symptoms since 15 and diagnosis of Bipolar II at 20, later changed to Bipolar I due to the psychosis that occurred during mood episodes. Now, it happens no matter what. Maybe not super often, but it happens. I also experience the social withdrawal, losing interest in everything, including my favorite hobbies, taking days, even months, to message people back... I have a hard time taking care of myself. I am slowly losing ability to feel emotion. Memory is getting really bad. I cant think straight enough for anything more than a 10 hours a week entry level job. This sucks... 😔
I think my girlfriend has schizophrenia. I'm not sure how to help her. She is hearing voices, feels like someone is touching her, she can hardly sleep some nights. She believes that it's spiritual in nature and doesn't believe it's a mental health issue. I'm so worried about her, I just want her to have her life back.
That is definitely schizophrenia (my son has the same). There are treatments and medications that can help.her a lot... my son is now 26 and doing well, just graduated from university But he is still hearing voices...
There are spiritual theories that resemble Schizophrenia, like Kundalini Awakenings and Ascension Symptoms....the Spiritual perspective puts a different cause to the symptoms, such as a spiritual cleansing of the psyche and energy field, as opposed to a disorder ( it's and evolutionary perspective). You probably have already asked her why she believes it's spiritual....I was a mental health therapist for a decade and have gone through a Kundalini Awakening myself. I resonate with the Spiritual perspective, but I believe people should go to therapy and take medication if they need to. I wish both of you the best.

For me it started with thinking people were talking shit about me when walking past them. For instance, walking past cafes or constructions workers on a site. I would also see shadow people. But I had been dealing with anxiety and depression for years prior to this, so I have no idea when the prodromal symptoms started. Anyway, hope you're doing okay.
Thank you for beeing so open. I have a bf who shows signs of this and also bipolar. It's getting worse and he don't do anything and don't care much about his appearance ore hygiene. His mood can flip like a clock and then it's like he dissociate himself I can't speak with him and also he can say hurtful things and come back and be normal again. His mom is very sick for years and she has symptoms of raging out of nowhere from the little things that most people don't react too. She's also acting like a little girl sometimes she's 54,and don't do much cooking home, grossery shopping etc. Sometimes when she visit she can sit in the sofa with here phone and just say nothing. I also witness she has manic episodes and then she seem posetiv, wants to talk, get up and do things. Also here sound of voice is different I notice that. She also calls here mom every single day witch I find very dissturbing. It's like she needs to have constant control ore she flips out. Can anyone see the same as I do? I don't know if it's BPD, bipolar ore schizophrenia. It's extremely hard to live with and exhaust me mentally. It's even harder when he won't go to the doctor he always deny things when I try to explain to him.

Ok-I’m mostly through this video and am thinking-this -right here. I need to know how to get started to feel again. How do I go to my doc and say-hey, you know that depression we’ve been treating for years? I think it’s more. I feel like they would wonder why I would even be looking into it. I have huge trust issues and it’s gotten to the point of not leaving the house (again).
I'm so sorry you're experiencing this. I would be really honest with your doctor. If you aren't, you may never really know. There are treatments for prodromal and early stage psychosis and for people who are at high risk, so there are options out there if that is what you are dealing with. I know how terrifying it can be to say something, but, if you don't, there's a chance that things will only get worse.
@@mariaalma8419 I went finally. I told my doc most of the truth. She changed my meds from Paxil to lexapro-and gave me a list of doctors. She said she thinks I’m resentful of my husband (which I know there is resentment) and said I have generalized anxiety disorder. I am a self pay on a tight budget-so there won’t be a trip to a psychologist anytime soon. :(
Sleep problems are an early sign of a lot of mental difficulties. I know that first-hand. But I don't think it's necessarily an early sign of mental illness if a person feels lethargic when other people aren't around. That seems to be how most people are. Of course, there are degrees of everything; highs may be higher and lows lower.
Thank you very much for such an interesting and educational video!! We definitely need more education about mental illness, and especially about early signs of psychosis. Maybe you know the work of psychiatrists Josef Parnas or Henri Grivois? They have a very interesting approach of these early symptoms and psychotic experiences

We are struggling to find answers… I am curious about your family history. Does anyone else in your family have this disorder? Do you have any other insight into early signs you or others may have experienced? ❤
My first signs of my schizophrenia was derealization and hallucinations like at first id believe i saw ghosts and the derealization was so intense i felt like I weren't real then boom full blown pyschosis so glad im medicated
My son’s bio mom has schizoaffective disorder and my son is showing all the signs. He’s now 28, so I can’t help him and it’s killing me. I have a question, when he comes out of his “episodes” does he feel bad for the things he’s done, or does he never know when he’s done bad things too others? TBH I’m hoping for the later, I fear for him feeling overwhelmed with guilt.
I'm 44 and my new therapist believes my diagnosis of bipolar 1 with phycosis is wrong way round and should be schizoaffective disorder bipolar type. At 16 I had similar symptoms. I was ok when at school, at work, church, or basically around people. When I was by myself, I dropped into deep depression. Now, for me, symptoms started sometime in middle school. Thus, by the time I was 16, I was already having hallucinations. When I slipped into my daily depression voices would start to wisper to me. None of these voices were ever positive. The constant abuse from the voices caused me to attempt suicide three times, at 13, 16, and 19. At 16, I finally got professional help. At first, I was diagnosed as schizophrenic, but due to my very poor reaction to medication, I was reclassified as bipolar with phycosis. Voices are very hard to live with, at least for me. They never seem to permitly go away, so instead, I try to drown them out with music, TH-cam videos, books, or any activity that my brain must take an active part in. Because of my new therapist concerns, my phycatrist changed my medication, and so far, it has been 2 weeks with voices. I don't know how long it will last, but I'm hoping they will leave me alone for at least a year. I'm finding a creative streak that hasn't been there in years, and more motivation for learning new skills for work. It is a bit odd having my head empty of voices after 30+ years, but I'm going to enjoy this quiet.
I am experiencing this rn but my diagnosis is schizoaffective. I’m worried because I seem to be needing so much sleep and am sleeping quite a lot. Otherwise I feel everything you just talked about and need to talk to the dr.

Why did his Psychiatrist ask him to stop ALL his medications??!!! How long was he on medication?? How many years since he was diagnosed??? Did the psychiatrist really told him to stop or was it your cousin who stopped taking it and told everyone it was his psychiatrist who told him to ???
We are going through a lot..... But I believe depression is one of those things that a lot of us are handling. It's not easy though but you can not all be happy without feeling sadness. It's natural.
I know this is a superficial thing to say, but a lot of people with schizo mental illnesses have such pretty, dreamy eyes. maybe because their imaginations are more active? idk but I've noticed that.
Do you have loss of sensation throughout your body? I feel like I am disconnected from my body I touch my face for example and I hardly feel it I find that this is the worst
Do you find now that you are older and more knowledgeable about your condition, that you can recognize irrational thoughts or feelings versus thoughts and feelings that have validity?
Well, I was more or less fine in the last 5 years, but recently I am developing what I would say apathy, a mild disinterest in my life and joy. But I think it's mild. Before that I had psychotic depression. I will go next week to a spiritual advisor, I will tell all my shit to her, and it comes out of me :)

I wish he'd get on different medication but he hasn't and won't he also abuses crack/cocaine ALOT and I'm sure that doesn't help AT ALL probably makes it worse
So was that dissociation of some sort? I’m trying to find what that symptom is classified as. Not Delusion. Not Mania. Not Hallucinations. Is it a type of Disorganization of Speech and Thinking? It would have to be the thoughts.
It varies from child to child, but for me, I would cry frequently and not know why. I had a lot of fake injuries because I was trying to cover up the fact that I didn't know why I was crying because I didn't think that was acceptable. People constantly asked me if I was okay because I just looked sad I guess. I was also extremely sensitive and insecure. In preschool and kindergarten especially I felt fundamentally different than the other kids and like I didn't belong, so I had a really hard time socializing. It was very easy for me to get anxious and panicky too. I felt like everything was spinning wildly out of control even when everything was fine. I also felt a great deal of guilt and like everything bad was my fault. Though I didn't share these thoughts with anyone, there were times where I considered walking into traffic or jumping off of high things. I just didn't want to exist. I think a lot of it was passed off as me being dramatic or overly sensitive and clingy. The best advice I can give is that if something looks like a cry for attention, check in with your kid. It's not always for no reason.
My son is 29 diagnosed with schzophrenia He has been living in a boarding home since july with other 7 mentally ill men he is also using poppy seeds or tylenol 1 or beer when he has money Please tell me if I made a mistake and it will worsen his situation Shall I bring him home ? You didn't make a mistake. Try hard to not worsen Your Own situation, your peace of mind, not having to worry excessively about him. You can do this by trying very hard to not lose his trust in you, by him not becoming suspicious of you and his perceived (whatever you have done to him). If you lose his trust you've lost him. This is my own experience with a twin brother.

I wonder if some of those feelings are just a part of life and everyone goes thru certain sadness, happiness, failures, success, and such but for some they want to be in a hospital.
Is there a standard for how the brain SHOULD function? What you're describing does not sound like a disorder. You just had LIFE happen and some of it was too shitty to understand or express. Even now, you struggle to identify the exact reason of your interpreted problems. You sound very smart and very much in need of feeling like it's your purpose to explain your own purpose and existence. Which is great! I would be interested in hearing the whole story. But words have never built anything or or food in a refrigerator, or rescue any form of life that needs help. It takes proper interpretaion of words. Words help for sure, but YOU made choices in life. There are consequences, or "ripples of effects" for these choices. Now that the future is here and the choices and experiences we have are still there, it becomes difficult to cope with, especially if we don't know how. This is LIFE and seems like it should be NORMAL. If you somehow just always know how to cope with everything, that is truly crazy! Or savant? Who most think is crazy! 😅
Don't label yourself, life goes up and down, a little psilocybin could re-set your emotions, stuff buried comes to the surface and you get a different outlook and then you think why was I thinking about that in my life. Their beaming sounds from a satellite into your head, use Scalar waves and brain waves to active and move certain nerves on your body. They went to school for this
That's what I thought. By watching themselves people tend to lose control, and convince themselves that they need to wear a psychiatric label on them. I met two people like that, one into a permanent depression "that I have accepted" and one who felt very relieved to be named an Asperger and refuses any contact with someone who is not Asperger.
I wish I had those symptoms. Mine are the opposite. I can't even work. I can't function. Were you diagnosed with it because it MUST be diagnosed by a professional and we cannot self diagnose from my understanding? I was on January 20th, 2023 (my birthday and not long ago) after a year of therapy after being diagnosed with BPD and CPTSD. I was told to stay clear of others who aren't officially diagnosed and aren't in recovery like me because they aren't the ones we should be learning from. You didn't even tell what type. That is what makes me think you self diagnosed. I am bipolar type. There's 2 types.
Hi there! I was professionally diagnosed with depressive-type schizoaffective disorder in August of 2008 after originally being diagnosed with schizophrenia earlier that month, and I also wish these were my full symptoms! The symptoms I talk about in this video are the symptoms I experienced in my prodrome. About 24 seconds into the video, I explain that the prodrome is the precursor to a true psychotic break, so they are not the symptoms of psychosis, but I guess you could say the pre-psychosis symptoms. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough about that in the video. Not everyone will have a prodrome, but many do, and if caught in or near the prodrome, it can make a huge positive difference in outcome. My point with this video is that they are very subtle. My full symptoms include visual, auditory, and tactile hallucinations; delusions; negative symptoms like alogia and flat affect; and a ton of disorganized symptoms. All of these can be extremely disabling for me, though my treatment works fairly well for me, so I do not have symptoms all of the time anymore. I think you will find that most people will not say what type of schizoaffective disorder they have on social media. Honestly, most people, even those who have it, seem to think that bipolar type is the only type, so I'm glad you have that information! You may also find that lots of people with schizoaffective disorder say that what they have is schizophrenia. I will take note of your comment though and maybe work on incorporating depressive-type into the way I talk about my illness more online. I haven't until now because one is not necessarily more severe than the other, so I found it didn't make a big difference in the way I talk about it. I hope this helps, but if you have more questions about my symptoms, feel free to ask or check out my blog :)
@@notliketheothers There's probably more awareness now. I was diagnosed with it back in the '90s and that didn't come up at all. But, from what I recall, it was clearly the bipolar type as I would get manic episodes as well. But, the whole thing is pretty muddy, as I've got autism and migraines and OCD, which makes it a bit unclear as to the extent to which I was having hallucinations due to schizoaffective disorder versus Alice in Wonderland Syndrome or migraines. I do somewhat question the validity of the diagnosis though as it's been gone for well over a decade without any medication and it seemed to go pretty quickly when I acknowledged that the paranoia was probably well justified based on past personal trauma and most of the rest of it did have other reasonable explanations.
Immediately improve your life by letting go of any thought that is causing an undesirable emotion in you. Imagine a butterfly landing on your hand. Gently raise your arm and allow the unbeneficial thought to release. Then, be appreciative in the knowing that you know the secret to betternment. Relax and take some deep breaths. There is nothing wrong with you. Peace is the way to more peace.✌

Some schizophrenic's are aggressive and border on being violent, but most of those types are men..
It depends on gender and personality
Which does your cousin live in? FL. sucks in Healthcare.
Schizophrenics aren’t violent. They live in constant fear

I'm sure you did the best you could. It's too easy looking back and wishing you had done more.

The world needs more education on mental illness. People hear schizophrenia and they think the worst. Also, our mental hospitals are so incredibly cold. I know their purpose is to just get them stable...

I hope he gets stronger and doesn't have new episodes. I wish you grace and strength as his mother and advocate.
Hey yes he probably does see and hear things I have. The first time it happened I stayed all night in the bathroom having a conversation with who I thought were angels. I had no idea I had schizophrenia.

God bless us all
What kind of things were you noticing for example?
@@dennisperkins4784 Amen to ur comment.❤
@@Brujo2016 I’ll just make up an example. I would notice 2 orange vehicles drove past me at 3:00, 3x2 is 6, that meant I needed to be careful of people who might betray me. That’s a pretty simple example, but others were more complex and had to do with other random things that happened per day. These thoughts would happen within a few seconds.

It constantly feels like something isn’t connected. All my parts have power but nothing is working together, so you just sorta go with the flow and feel things as they get triggered. When I did “feel” it came about when two odd parts connected and created some type of irrational fear or excitement. 😔
What stigma about "high-functioning" schizophrenia ???
It's a spectrum disorder it manifests in different people in different ways!
Have you been on antipsychotics for many years??
Love your videos my mother has got schizophrenia and finding it hard to cope with
Seems like a lot of MOMS have schizophrenia!
You need to tell her parents.
That is definitely schizophrenia (my son has the same). There are treatments and medications that can help.her a lot... my son is now 26 and doing well, just graduated from university
But he is still hearing voices...

Thank you, you are bold for speaking out.

Sounds familiar 😕
All they offer are antidepressants. Those don't help me at all.
@@mariaalma8419 I went finally. I told my doc most of the truth. She changed my meds from Paxil to lexapro-and gave me a list of doctors.

It is a bit odd having my head empty of voices after 30+ years, but I'm going to enjoy this quiet.
lack of sleeping produce schizophrenia also in great measure.. example my son Jeffrey

They were negative symptoms
What symptoms of depression does a 4 or 5 year old present with? I want to know what to look for.

You made the right choice!!
Did you ever have tactical hallucinations?
Robert Marley -- I've had tactile hallucinations. For awhile I felt like termites were in my backbone, and they were gnawing on my vertebrate.

very true - what getting help looks like definitely is important! I will make sure to address this in future videos.

I wonder if some of those feelings are just a part of life and everyone goes thru certain sadness, happiness, failures, success, and such but for some they want to be in a hospital.
wow the eyes are terrifying

This is a fine example of what happens when a society overdoses on ‘therapy’ and self analysis and over thinks everything.
It was depression. Completely diffferent than what I’ve experienced with my friend who does have actual schitz.
Aspergers.
