Excellent video yet again. Thank you. I could have sworn that the strip club they played in was called El Paradiso and not Paradise. But you pulled up the old picture. Oh to be at those early gigs. We need a time machine. I would definitely go back. Nostalgia is such a pain. I've been reading a few Melody Maker magazines from back in the day and it seems to me the Pistols only got real famous on the World Stage AFTER they broke up. Even 1977 Melody Makers have very little coverage of the band. They have a couple of front pagers but not enough. Sex Pistols were game changers, a myth and instigators of changing minds and culture. They were the only band that mattered if you look back on it. Yes Bernie Rhodes and Malcolm had a vision, but the band themselves tried and nailed it. There is no better album than Never Mind the Bollocks. Every song is perfect and still stands up even more so today.
Thanks for watching Richard! Wow, you said it perfectly. They were the only band that mattered. I have old NMEs and I noticed the same thing. They got some coverage, but not much. Someone like Paul McCartney or Bob Dylan got much more. I thought it was the El Paradiso too, but I think the confusion is that they did play a place with that name, but it was in Europe somewhere - maybe Amsterdam. Not many sex places left in Soho. I remember walking Soho in 1978-1980 and it was full of them. Thanks again!
Melody Maker hated them. It was aimed at lovers of dinosaur bands and mainstream rock. Sounds was probably the most pro punk. NME was somewhere in between.
Love it. Times I asked my sister Chrissy which venue she saw The Pistols and she always says, “Could’ve been Roxy, Nashville, 100 club, Ronnie Scotts, can’t remember exactly..” she reckons the more I’ve asked the more she can’t remember..I wish I was the first one born, not fair..😎 On another note, my dad was a Teddy Boy and he used to frequent the clubs n coffee bars around soho late 50s. 3 of us have haunted the place at different stages n times. Met great people, saw great bands. Cherished for forever. Love from North London ❤️
Thanks for watching! How can your sister not remember what venue? (They didn't play at the Roxy or Ronnie Scotts). I think the most frequent place they played was the 100 Club. I'll include that in my next video. Your dad must have gone to Bar Italia. I love that place - popular with the Mods and Teds - and went there a couple of times on my recent visit. Soho is still wonderful. Not the same, but I still love it.
Another great video. I lived round the corner from the Roxy in the 90s. Great to see what these old venues are now as I left London 26 years ago..Hoping to do a quick visit in the next few weeks. I love it around Covent Garden, soho,Charing x road etc Always feels alive
Wow, you lived in a great area! I was out in Kilburn in the 90's. I feel alive when I'm there too. Whether it's having a pint at a pub like The Ship on Wardour St. or sipping a coffee outside of Bar Italia....Soho is still a great place.
Another great video Maggie. It cool that The Cambridge still looks the same and Notre Dame Halls.... El Paradise is unrecognisable, but if you look up, they kept the same sash windows. Even though I only live 20 miles from London and have visited, or just walked past these places many times, your videos are great and it's good to see this history from the comfort of my armchair! 😀 Take care 🇬🇧
Hi Andy, Thanks for watching again! I really appreciate it. Did you go to any of the Frank Carter shows? Just curious. Yes, Soho has changed a lot but I still love it. Still a busy and vibrant place. I'm glad some of the pubs are still there, like The Cambridge and The Ship. There used to be many more sex places back in the 70's. Now there are only a handful at most.
@@WhyNotGoPlaces I love Soho too, such a great place. Unfortunately didn't get to see the Pistols at Bush Hall as the tickers sold out in a flash. But, I'm going to see them on 26th September at The Forum. I can't wait! Frank comes from the same town as me, about 20 miles north west of London.
Again a nice tour and view on some historic buildings Maggy!I looked up Sos and in the chorus you hear indeed the guitar part that Glen adapted for the better! Great video - i have been to that cinema on Leicester Square a few times in the past and never realised the pistols had played those famous gigs just next door. Soho needs more blue plaques for punk rock locations to bring awareness. I had no idea the cambridge was an old sex pistols venue, yet i have been in there several times. I used to work in shaftesbury ave for an I.T company back in early 2000's. I have been in the Roxy in 2013 when it was a shop that sold swimwear lol. I was in there with a friend who was at gigs in the Roxy in 1977, and he showed me where the stage used to be downstairs, next to the shop tills. The thing that struck me was how small the shop was! It was hard to believe it hosted all those early punk gigs with so many famous bands from back in the day. Soho and covent garden were very different atmosphere back in the late 70s, before gentrification. Keep these great videos coming maggie. Ps - the three kings ( previously called the Nashville back in the 70s), in west kennsington is a good venue to visit. I used to watch sport events in it in the early 2000s. Yes, I have read that downstairs was small and that's where the bands played. So historic! I've never been to the old Nashville location. Maybe I'll go there next time. Joy Division also had an early gig there. That plaque where the Roxy was located doesn't look like an official London plaque btw. Not sure how those things are decided, but yes I mention it several times in various videos ..."why isn't there a plaque here?" I probably repeat that a little too much. Thanks for the links. Hi Maggie, yeah great video, they should do punk tours of London (or maybe they already do!). There was another club called The Vortex, not sure if the Pistols played there as well
Thanks for watching again! There is a really good tour called The Original Punk Soho Tour. I believe it's once a week. A guy named Aiden does it and he's very knowledgeable . When I went on it, I already knew the Sex Pistols places he visits (Denmark St., 100 Club etc) but he also has other stops, like an area in Chinatown they used to have record stalls like RockOn Records. He's old enough to have gone to The Roxy in 1977 so it's a good tour. I have The Vortex in my part 2. No, I don't think the SP played there either, but I think Siouxsie did.

I wonder if Lydon signed off on his replacement, much like the recent miniseries reenacting sex pistol history with actors based von Glenn's book, I believe, Lydon is probably " Pissed". I think it's ok just so long as people know they take poetic license on these films. "Sid and Nancy". is one of my favorite films even though not much of it is factual only in a general sense, Lydon hates that film too.

Unfortunately a lot in the USA, in particular, completely swallowed McLaren's retelling of history, where he created this myth of himself as the great music industry svengali, creating a band and stage-managing everything, to the extent that many there believe they were a kind of punk version of The Monkees.
Still have negative thoughts about all this ....😂 Makes you embarrassed to wear a Sex Pistols t-shirt. Last time I saw them was in Manchester 2007 I think and they crap even with Rotten
Thanks for watching! For some reason I always say "P-eye-L". I always spell the 3 letters and don't say "pill." That's just me. Either way, I love the band. :)
I thought John was the coolest guy ever when I was younger, but it's obvious he is just insufferable to be around, and he seems to get worse with age. Too bad he can't mellow out a little and realize there's 3 other guys in the band and it's not all about him.
I think John lydon is a great man brilliant and very intelligent while cook and Jones although good musicians don't have much to tell and Matlock is just that old mod pensioner he was never a real punk in my opinion and sid was the ultimate fool all into that self-destructive sex and drugs and rock and roll bs and who is this "new" frontman he looks pathetic to me
if you are doing a pistols docu, why not have like a big sex pistols button on your coat or blazer, to look more punky than a preppy, you are still a punk rocker right,, i hope so,.......marius(punk rules).

Still have negative thoughts about all this ....😂 Makes you embarrassed to wear a Sex Pistols t-shirt. Last time I saw them was in Manchester 2007 I think and they crap even with Rotten
I know it's weird without Lydon. I'm happy for Steve, Paul and Glen because I bet they love playing together again.
Mick Jagger on vocals ? 555.
Maggie, I enjoy your content. My only complaint is you pronounce PIL wrong in one of your other videos. It’s pronounced as pill.
I don't think they ever got along with him. It's so sad they don't speak at all.
I think John lydon is a great man brilliant and very intelligent while cook and Jones although good musicians don't have much to tell and Matlock is just that old mod pensioner he was never a real punk in my opinion and sid was the ultimate fool all into that self-destructive sex and drugs and rock and roll bs and who is this "new" frontman he looks pathetic to me
He's become a truly awful person! I'll leave it at that.
ABBA rule!
if you are doing a pistols docu, why not have like a big sex pistols button on your coat or blazer, to look more punky than a preppy, you are still a punk rocker right,, i hope so,.......marius(punk rules).
I have loved the band since Anarchy came out, followed them on the American tour in 1978, and I still listen to NMTB almost every day. I'll always be a fan.
Frank Carter is nothing compared to Johnny.
